Lessons, music, thoughts and sharing brought to you by Australian bassist Patrick Farrell.
This channel was originally called "PW Farrell's Bass Lessons" and was intended as a "side project" to my "real" channel. Back then it still felt strange to share creative content and educational/informative content in one place. When I was coming up in the late 90s musicians still seemed to be scared to admit that most of us do more than just perform. I think I was scared to share anything other then performance material because of that dumb old adage: "those who can't do, teach". Well thankfully that seems to be a thing of the past. Fantastic musicians of YT have normalised the "wholistic" image of being a performer/creator/educator. I love that!

The music in this video is part of a doctoral project.
The project is about developing a specific approach to idiomatic improvising. It’s a research project, a “working out” of an idea, not solely a standalone musical offering.
I am drawing on my producer chops, rather than collaboration. This approach lacks the vibrance of live musicians but helps realise the specific goals of the music-as-research.
Personally, as someone on the inside of this material, I enjoy the fusing of this language and the computer sounds. It is a tricky move with this kind of rep because the acoustic timbres of jazz tell an important cultural story: the blues and the African American experience. The tools of my musical play are the product of an African American experience of which I am a cultural outsider.
I think the appeal of jazz fusion is what Kevin Fellezs calls “the broken middle”: that disintegrated un-categorise-able space beyond commercial and critical labels and between cultures.
As a pure listener this little recording is challenging. The angular nature of Coltrane’s ‘Giant Steps’ is stacked with angular digital timbres, angular time signatures and the in-human nature of computerised “performance”.
How does this angular stack juxtapose against the organic - though electronic - sound of my fretted bass guitar? Does the effort of playing bring humanity into this mix?
I see idiomatic improvising as a very, very slow kind of composing. Improvising vocabularies are furnished over months, years, of working hands into shapes, interfacing with the shapes of instruments.
This project draws on some ideas about melody. The main idea being developed, and worked into my technique, is the use of stepwise/linear motion at either the surface level or the sub-surface level.
This melodic sub-surface is not aligned necessarily with schenkerian analysis. It’s more localised than that. It is as simple as connecting boundary notes of a melodic gesture through stepwise motion; the gesture can jump around playfully - gap returns etc - and yet the linear motion is retained at the structural level.

Why does modern jazz/contemporary jazz sound different to Bebop? A conceptual shift occurred, largely due to modal jazz, in which improvisers shifted from a vertical approach to a horizontal approach.... That is, they moved from the chord-tone approach to the chord-scale approach. PWF

I know I demoed this in an older video but I thought I could do a better job of sharing this pedal's awesomeness. Also, I had to make another review of this pedal where I wasn't wearing a stupid hat! This piece seems to be the most difficult and serious case for everyone trying to make fluid music of it. And it only emphasizes how out of this world Jaco was in year 1977
Another tip for people learning this piece... If you dont have a fretless, use a thin-neck Jazz with flats.. Really helped me during the learning phases get me finger technique and being able to move around the bass and slide. Playing on rounds gets a bit brutal on your fingers, and it can be a bit demoralizing because it can be harder to get that clean, crisp sound on rounds sometimes, unless you really know what you are doing... This helped me at least back in the 90's when I learned it, and maybe it can help someone else!
Why waste your talent, time and energy on copying a genius, when you have the capacity to do your own thing? I don't get it....
This was the opening song of the set and a major reason I kept steady training my doublebass. Well, I was at the concert, so I could see many fingering NHØP used, amazing. Thank so much for doing this transcription, playing and explaining it. 🙏🏼

I've tried to play the first five notes the way you are and many other really good bassists do, but it never seemed quite right to me and I'd never seen Jaco and Weather Report perform Havona live nor could not find a video on YT for years; maybe there is one up now, but I did see WP live when Jaco was playing and outside of WP up close. This is just my own personal opinion, but I think Jaco doesn't cross string on the second 16th note (E) of that melody on the A string, I think he arpeggiates (not a real word) using his index and pinky fingers on the E string, then cross strings on the A and D strings with his index finger, then lands on the 15th fret C on the A string with with the second finger going up. Think about it, wouldn't that be a more practical way to execute that run from those first five 16th notes? Also, Jaco didn't play that run perfectly clean on both recordings, which could be why is sounds more emotional, expressive, dynamic, or less stiff, not that he didn't want to or couldn't nail it in a way a player like Jeff Berlin would have perhaps done, but I think that would've sound too perfect or less soulful. I think sometimes, feel is more important than perfectly executed fast or difficult lines and although I truly love Jeff Belin's playing, sometimes I thought he sounded too perfect back during his Bill Bruford days, but it all depends on the style. I've seen Jaco play live a few times and he would use stretch arpeggios (not a real name) to get around the bass at times. I could be totally off with my take, though. Maybe think of playing those first five notes in more of a "Z" formation up until that C. Again, this is my own take and I could be wrong.

Very good video. Freddie used pbass for this and there is a video of him. That 6 slap thing was hard. I trained it probably for like 4 years almost daily. Now I think I can do it, but was not easy 😆
