Live Free or Die Trying
Sweden
Приєднався 11 гру 2010
Hi everybody.
We all have dreams, but why just dream, why not do it instead.
So I made a choice.
I chose to try out the dream, live the dream - for real.
I've been dreaming of a simpler life in the woods for years. A life free from chasing money, work all day to get them and pay for everything incl. taxes. A life free of useless stuff. So I gave a lot away, threw a lot away, drove a lot to the recycling center, sold the rest, stopped working, and moved to a small cabin in the Swedish woods. Here I'll try to live an independent, self reliant, sustainable life in the woods, in a cabin with enough comfort, so it can be my home all year round. I'll try to live off the land, go hunting, go fishing, grow vegetables and more.
In short terms - LIVE FREE or DIE TRYING.
I'm born in 1960 in Copenhagen, worked all my life, I'm not rich and I don't have any special skills to do what I do, - I just do it, or die trying.

Outside chinking mesh done, Clearing forest behind the log cabin. Vlog 263 - S6
The wire mesh, for the chinking on the outside walls, are finally finished, and I can look forward to do it all over again inside. All the spruce trees behind the cabin took a lot of light, from the kitchen window, not to talk about the eventual fire hazard, all the dead, dry branches was, when I get a chimney up, very close to them. Now I have cleared all of it, there's only three spruce trees left.

At last the frost is gone. Lovely weather and nice temperatures has arrived in the woods - it's spring. Flowers are planted, old cobbles/rocks, that someone laid decades ago, are dug out, and plans are made. some of my oak steps are glued together, and is looking good, and an old, bent and rusty sawblade are hammered on, driven over, and made a bit prettier, so it can hang on my gable wall abov...

Since I'm in need of floorboards for the loft, i try to make use of all the not so good pieces I have, and it turned out to a bit of a jigsaw. My stringers are planed, and the oak steps are cut, bits of cut off are made into suitable pieces to support the steps, and then it was time to put it all together, and walk up the stairs for the first time. I was in for a white morning when I woke up to...

I was sick and tired of me and the cats dragging sawdust into the house and the cabin, so I cleaned up around the woodshed and outside the cabin. Since I got the floor in, I can begin fitting the stairway to the loft. I still need a lot of boards for the loft, so my sawmill are running, and soon I have enough to cover it.

Made some good deals this week. The floorboard that wasn't in place and needed to be wedgecut, are now in place, and it looks quite good. The weather allowed for some stapling, and the first floorboards for the loft, are cut in length and put up.

The ground floor planks are in place, and I made a rectangular space inside the door. This will later be filled in with something like rocks or tiles laid in cement, so that you have a place to stand and remove dirty boots etc.

I was in for a challenge, when I should lay the first stack of floorboards. The tree trunk, I've got standing straight up on the subfloor, had to be lifted to lay floorboards underneath. A few tense moments, but it went quite well.

Which tone of color will be best for the outside chinking? That's the question. The rest of my floorboards will be wedge cut according to old Swedish tradition.

Howdy Michael- your hands are much tougher than mine are handling that wire mesh. I would be scratched up. Lol. Getting the trees down really made a big difference. Nothing like a cup of coffee sitting on the porch during a rain. Love it. Hope you have a great weekend. God bless
looking good ! that sure brightened things up one that side of the cabin to .
Loved your benches. Great idea. Best to you
Hello Michael. You've worked really hard. If I could at the moment, I would help you. But unfortunately that's not possible. I have a sick father-in-law at home. Are you already retired? Best wishes from Germany. Andi
How many boxes of staples have you gone through already?!! Lots of Lodge pole sized timber you have now. Who is Smila's mate? Male or female?
Definitely enjoyed the longer version, gives us a better insight into your week living free, cheers , have coffee ☕️ break
Although the shade is nice in summer getting that area cleaned up could save all your hard word if a forest fire ever got close. Looked good without the trees too. What the heck was doing all that barking? Kind of sounded like a fox 🦊
Forest jobs during summer, its hard!!! I did some today as well. Also to clear for more light! Funny how cats love to get between conversations 😊 Specially video calls!
Hi Michael, Very nice! I like your use of the brass. Super house warming gift I must say. See ya soon , Terry
Hi Terry. My friends love them, and can't wait to get them into their park like garden. Take care and all the best Michael
Hi, Michael! That one picture of your hand--- did you get hurt? Hope not. Sending good wishes, Sheryl
Hi Sheryl. No, i didn't get hurt. It was just a picture of my hand with all the fine dust from sanding the log. All the best Michael
Glad to hear it! My eyes are not so great, I guess!😂🤣
They look fantastic 😍 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Catarina ☺️
Howdy Michael- fantastic job on the benches!!! I may have to borrow your idea and make a couple for our fire pit. Your flowers are really looking beautiful. Hope you have a great weekend. God bless
Hi Paul. Borrow away my friend. I'm sure you're gonna make some beauties. All the best Michael
Wov looks very good. Have a nice weekend 🙂
Thanks Valdemar ☺️
Such a great idea/project very cool looking!! Love it👌🏻
Hi Dew. Now you know what to build to sit on around the bonfire/ barbecue pit, cumfy - without getting a wet behind - Thanks ☺️ All the best Michael
For sure!!
Very Nice! Something to refine, make copies of, and sell if you have the whim to do so.
Hi Joseph. Everyone that has seen the pictures of them, say like you. I showed them in my local builders market/lumberyard, and asked how much they would cost, if they were on sale in their shop. 3-4000svkr. That equals 285-380 dollars. So if I can get my hands on some logs for cheap (no tax and so) I could sell them (no tax) for around 150. That would be great for my financial situation. I'm for sure going to ask the local forest owners. All the best and have a great weekend Michael
Brilliant
Thanks AW ☺️
I googled log benches and there were literally hundreds of different styles. However, I didn’t spot one with your unique hinged, dry bum feature! Very clever. I can see a stone bonfire pit will be next.
Hi Grace. I haven't seen them anywhere. Hmm, yeah, there's is just a catch. Those two I've made, I'll give away to my friends Daniel and Josefine. They've bought a new house, with a park like piece of land, so it's my Housewarming present for their garden. All the best Michael
First time I see these. So cool!!! I think I make one this summer. Thanks for the idea Michael!!!
Hi Peteris. You do that ☺️
Nice benches Michael.
Thanks Quarlow ☺️
those benches are awesome !! great job
Thanks Paul ☺️
Hi, Michael! Do you have walnut there? My brothers used to cut that for vaneer. Just wondering... Sending good wishes, Sheryl
Hi Sheryl. There are walnut, buy not in my area. All the best Michael
Hey, Michael! Been watching all your older videos, and suddenly realized the number of views this video had gotten. The only thing I have concluded is that your friend, The Bearded One, has given you some powerful pointers. If so, yippie for you, and yippie for him being such a smart, kind man! (I have watched his videos also.)😊 Wishing you well, Sheryl
Hi Sheryl. Wow, I'm blown back. You've watched how a new form of life, living free, has developed the last five years - I'm amazed. Paul wrote a comment on one of my first videos after my sawmill purchase, and the funny thing is, that I've watched all his videos, some of them several times. He's like my long distance teacher and mentor via his videos on cabin building. Such a fantastic skilled craftsman. He is the reason I had the courage to by a sawmill and 42 logs, so I could build my dream cabin. All the best my friend Michael
Perfect spot for the old saw blade 👌
Important with firewood for the winter. Have a great day 🙂
Very important Valdemar. No firewood = no heat = no water. So I'm making firewood all year round. All the best Michael
fun n games collecting firewood ! I should start on mine too I guess lol
Hi Paul. For me getting that firewood inside the barn, are not just essential but a year round job, so you better get out of the start blocks, if you wanna keep up. 😂😂 All the best Michael
Howdy Michael- you are getting a good start on your firewood. I haven’t cut any up yet. I did cut some trees back in the winter while the sap was down and will work it all up in the fall when it is cooler. Have a great weekend. God bless
Hi Paul. It's a start, but there's a long way to go. I need 3 - 4 times more to be on the safe side. Great you cut down trees during the cold season. They will keep you both busy and warm during winter. All the best Michael
Preparing for Winter! Thank You for the video!
Because i am sick since Xmas, i am lacking some firewood for the coming winter. I will have to buy some 😞 But it is good to see you thriving in nature!
Hi Polder. Sorry to hear you're not on top, so you have to spend money on something so basic as firewood and heat. I hope you soon are fit for fight and once again can chop away again. Best wishes and all the best Michael
@@livefree-ordietrying Thank you very much Michael!!!
Michael, Your home is stunning! It looks so comforting. You should be very proud of your work. And by the way, your guardian angel is a knockout!! 😂 Sending best wishes, Sheryl
Hi Sheryl. Thank you my friend. It was a long haul to get water inside the house, a nice bathroom with a toilet and shower, and a functional, modern kitchen. Yup, that angel are something special. All the best Michael
😎👍
Your wheel barrow is showing it's age! Last wind storm took out some big Pine tree branches. Been letting them dry a bit before I use the splitter. Be Blessed.
Hi Joseph. Yeah, it's well used, but still going strong. Well, that's an easy way to get some firewood, and still have the trunk standing. Hope it's not too damaged. All the best Michael
Have a great weekend cheers ☕️ 😂
You too Dirk. 😊🍀
Doing the very same, splitting, bucking up lots of tree’s beavers took down. Thank you 🤝
Hi AW. Well, well, you got help from outside - hahaha. All the best Michael
Hi, Michael! You crack me up mixing bread with a drill, but the results looked delish! I sure enjoyed the moose pictures, and those flowers were very pretty. What are they? I send you best wishes. Sheryl
Hi Sheryl. Well, at didn't have anything else, so an old Dewalt drill made the job much easier. The small blue flowers are called forest forget me not. That small baby moose was so cute, and so was the black adder. All the best Michael
Whatever you do you do nice. Everything is looking so beautiful. Keep the videos coming, it inspires me to do good. Thanks Michael Is that the same tar you use to attract the pigs ? Wouldn’t that be ironic if they showed up at the new garden. Have a great week!!
Hi Terry. It's not every day I'm being called inspirering, so a big thank you is in order. It's actually black wood oil, the wood tar are something completely different, but agreed, it looks a bit like the same. All the best my friend and take care Michael
Putting the metal lathe in place is certainly a tedious job! However, it will pay off in the long run with mortar chinking that won’t deteriorate! Do you set yourself a daily objective…like doing two courses/day and then on to something else?
Hi Grace. You're absolutely right - tedious. It takes forever, but that's the name of the game, when you want a half dovetail cabin the old school way. I don't have any objectives, but do a little ones in a while. I've already on my second pack of 5000 staples, and I'm still not finished outside. All the best Michael
Everything you touch will be beautiful. Have a nice day🙂
Hi Valdemar. That's what I call trust. Thanks a lot All the best Michael
very nice job on the flower bed , your car sure got a workout hauling all the garden mix !
Hi Paul. Let me put it this way - it was full of dirt.... luckily in plastic bags. Thanks, and I'm satisfied with the result. All the best Michael
I kind of liked the 4 black posts sticking up. Thought maybe you might add a climbing plant or 2. Or some decorations. Still the flower bed looks very good. Thumbs up!
Hi Joseph. I was thinking the same, but decided to cut them. But I have some other ideas, where there will plants climbing. All the best Michael
Man, no subtitles again. What happened?
Hi Souza. I have no idea. Sometimes they come up immediately, sometimes in a day or two, sometimes nothing at all. Very strange, and very irritating. All the best Michael
I would like to thank you for filling my ots last legso I have to go with joy. If I lived closer I would like to help you u phone is on
Hi Jeff. Normally I get the job done, but this here project was tuff, and even though I wasn't surprised by all the rocks, I was overwhelmed by the time it took. All the best Michael
Stunning Michael! Beautiful but hard work! 💪
Thanks a lot Peteris - or is it just Peter? That was a tuff job, and I'm only like 15-20% of the way. 🥵 All the best Michael
Yes! It can be Peter! Thank You for nice videos! Best regards!
Howdy Michael- the flower bed and walkway look fantastic! Hope all is well. Take care and God bless
Thanks a lot Paul. All is perfect. All the best Michael
see Humbert Richard
Flower bed and walkway look great. Fine, Fine job! That’s the same way I get glue off my hand, sawdust. Best to you.
Hi Den. Thanks. Sawdust is useful for a lot of stuff. All the best Michael
Absolutely love the planter❤
Thank you Jo. All the best Michael
You are in very good shape, well done. Have a nice day 🙂
Hi Valdemar. My way of life keeps me in ok shape, but if it's good - I'm not sure. All the best Michael
Hey, Michael! If you can get a wren house in your garden, you won't have worms in your cabbage. It took me over seventy years to learn that!😂 Best wishes to you. Sheryl
Hi Sheryl. Thanks for your advice. All the best Michael
Hi, Michael, Cute little cream/milk can at the end. Hope your day goes well.😊 Best wishes, Sheryl
Hard work! Save Your back!
Hi Peteris. Yup, it was at times a bit backbreaking. All the best Michael
