Will We Get a Second Cutting? Grazing Hay Ground in June
Will we have a second cutting of hay this year? It's not looking very promising at the moment. Our hands have been tied with the high cost of fertilizer and now, we are experiencing drought conditions with no call for rain in the near future.
Our fingers are crossed and we are sending up prayers for He always provides and blesses us with what we need. For now, we keep on keeping on...

If you've been with us for a while you know that Gelbvieh bull likes to jump fences but today he was a little extra! Apparently he and the heifer bull, Echo, had a little fence line showdown and big G ended up with the heifers. Which leads to the question... is the grass greener on the other side of the fence?
Controlling the Horn Fly 🪰 Tags, Pour & Oiler

Fly Control in Cattle is something that we take seriously here at Lone Wolfe Cattle. We've tried many methods over the years, fly spray, ear tags, powder or dust, and pour on without great results. This year, we are experimenting with a Lewis Cattle Oiler. We bought one at the farm machinery show in Louisville this year and I'm doing an informal study to see if we should add more next year. I would live to see a video follow up after shed out when the new unpigmented hair comes in i been doing this with dry is as well as going to the liquid nitrogen i still cannot get a consistant good looking finished brand the first one i did turned out fabulious the rest been spotty and ok but not hoe it should be and calvex have to have a brand to take to the sale barn ive acaully given up branding if these cattle are going private treaty. And the hot brand takes about a solid pysh and thats it its readable for life and im sure it does stress the animal it stresses me the cattle are easily stressed i been in rancheing ten generations. And im only a small producer had a sci in 2013 but managed to get out of a wheel chair in about five years the cattle keep me going there are no sick fays for sure they have to be fed daily sometimes more any tips we should get togather and talk more great video put togather some rock solid ways to freeze brand i defanatly like it over hot brands. Colorado is a good environment at least cool nights after hot brands but still the less stress the better for the animal. They deserve as good a life as possible. They areaking the ultimate sacrifice for us. 🤠👌

It's been awhile since we bought nitrogen but it was cheaper than dry ice. Another expense to consider is the tank that you need to store it, best I remember the tanks are around $400.

We haven't had much rain either . . . on one hand I'm glad I cut our fields tall to help survive the droughts but that extra growth will add dead material into my second cut. We only strap the bales on the end of the trailer.....

River was 32 feet above flood stage and that's 21feet I think? My special friend is having a delivery sent to me for my keeping and to bring with me to KY ... She'll be meeting me there shortly after I get there. Glad you have gotten some rains. Been just storms here and hot and humid 🥵.. Years ago our neighbors big ole barn was hit by lightning strike and burned to the ground..lost barn and over 2,000 Sq bales of hay.. all that's left is the concrete.. Many years ago we had a small field of hay down at house and my parents had to go to funeral I think anyway it was looking like rain. So my brother and I decided to take tractor and rake and rake it up and make a hay stack. I wasn't old enough to use the baler.. we worked out u know whats off and finally got a stack made. Pole in the ground and all. I remembered my Grandpa stacking oats.. Didn't know at time but my mom was home and watching us out the kitchen window.. we finished just as the rain came. We no sooner got to house than we heard it strike and my mom hollered at us to look. And it struck the pole and our hay stack was gone. Probably been about 40/50 bales

He crushed field corn cob husk and all..made good feed and filler. He charged like .50 cents a hundred weight for grinding.. every other Saturday afternoon we'd go get corn ground.. Mr Harper looked at me and told my grandpa that he's going to be a farmer. When I was 6or 7 I'd go to the store and his wife would give me two orange dream cycles and I'd go behind the store where his big bottom was and I'd get up on the tractor and sit on his lap and drive with him as he mowed hay. @@thecattlemanswife I believe you may have figuired me out.... There was a time when thought of making a video mudded the actions of what I was doing.....But as time progressed.... those thoughts... became less involved and the job at hand took priority.....Whether or not anyone sees or even cares .....So to all those who think you have to do it Hollywood... Go Pound Sand!

I live in two very different worlds, my day job is one world and my home life is another world, they don't always mesh... If you know what I mean. I try not to over think what I share here on UA-cam, it's a side of my life that most people I encounter can't relate to. I like making videos and sharing them...I wish I had been doing this when my oldest son was still at home and working on the farm with us but it's too late for that. I know he watches and recalls doing all the farm things when he was Ransoms age. Both my boys can look back and remember that they were rooted in agriculture no matter where their lives might lead them. Thank you for being real with me Mr. David, much respect to you sir ❤️

Glad you found everything alright.. bulls can be a real pain in the you know where. I turned out a 18 month old Angus bull once and he made the rounds and whipped 3 other bulls and came back to his pasture. And was never any problem after. He was the boss. When I sold him he weighed 2720 lbs.

We had a fence jumper once when I was about 13..... My Daddy Made a yoke out of a 4[n dia round wood about a foot long,,,, drilled two holes.....near the bottom perpidicular to each other and inserted two pegs.... hung it around the culprit's neck with a chain.... first time they tried to jump the fence one of the pegs would hook the fence and land them on their back.. on the other side..... they gave up jumping quickly

We did get some rain from that system that moved through. The heat is on... Same here in Kentucky this week. It's miserably hot and humid.

Exactly 💯. The guys are putting up hay on some neighbors and I'm not recording video in their fields to protect their privacy so that's pretty much what I plan to do. It's almost impossible to scroll Facebook and Tic Toc while you're in the pool so I've been listening to a few podcasts while I float. I've found one that I like, it's called Beltway Beef, sponsored by the National Cattlemans Association.

@@thecattlemanswife That's cool. Take a float for me too.. We had 3 different sz poos growing up..last was a 24/48 and 4ft deep with a 15 ft deck and 24 inch walk around it. My brother was always the pool dude. But the time we got the last one I was usually out doing something on farm or gardens. He was my partner in the reg simmental herd. But that's all..a partner especially when we sold some haha ..
