My Dad had a trick for when a cow wouldn’t take her calf that used to work more often than not. He’d enlist the help of our collie dog. He’d shove the dog in the pen. I don’t know if it was just something that would maybe kick in her mothering instinct, but she’d chase the dog out of the pen and most of the time, after that she’d let the calf suck. A bit of momentary stress for the poor pup, but often it worked.
Thanks for sharing... Protective instincts to keep the calf safe ✅ makes perfect sense! That's something new to us and we will definitely try that but, as of last night, she had started letting the calf suck without Scott getting in the pen with her. We are going to keep them up to be sure that she's bonded with it but things are looking better.
