Welcome to Upgrade Your Books. Do you like reading books? Me too.
Over the years I've accumulated a lot of them. In my youth, I'd just settle for the cheapest way to get hold of a book - borrowing it from the library or a friend, or buying the mass-market pocketbook edition. As I started to make a bit of income, I began to prefer buying trade paperback editions and hardcovers. Then I discovered deluxe and collectible editions, like those from Franklin Library or Easton Press or the Folio Society.
I think about it like I think about the approach to alcohol - initially it is a functional item so you buy whatever is cheapest, down on the lowest shelf! Later on you can shop in the middle shelves. Then you get to a point where you want to treat yourself, so you start looking at the top-shelf products. For me, it's the same thing with books. Problem is, once I upgrade to top-shelf books, I still need to get rid of the cheaper ones...and that's how this channel was born.

Can you please guide us which edition of dark knight to get
Librarian here sharing with my Father, a book seller. Fascinating to see the comparitve details.
@@sophiemaier7273 Thank you for the comment, and massive applause to a family with both a librarian and a bookseller! You and your father are the cornerstones to we book-loving folk! It means a lot when people like you find my silly little videos helpful or interesting, because that’s who they are made for - the true book enthusiast. I hope your father found some value in what I presented.
Was trying to find the version to buy . Now it's clear
Glad to help. What version did you decide on?
Liked the irony of a new folio book at a great price! Overall nice review!
Ha! No doubt. The only way I get em new at a great price these days is in used bookshops. Picked this one up for less than 40 bucks Canadian. For double the price of a paperback, I have no issues. It's when they cost more than a true first printing of the novel that I start seeing red.
Great video, very helpful!
@@imperatorAnzac1944 Thank you for the kind words - glad you found some value in it!
This is going to sound like blasphemy, but they should release these as ebooks 😂
It sure as heck DOES sound like blasphemy! The feeling of the cover's cloth in-hand, the silky smoothness of the interior paper, the luxurious textured photo paper used for the images, and the smell of the thing! The smell of it! It would all be missing from the electronic book. For this audacious suggestion, I name you the new "Heretic of Dune (Books)"!
Great attention to detail, thanks for the walkthrough.
My pleasure! It's a very nice edition and worth tracking down if it can be found at a reasonable price.
Hopefully they do the final three books, it would be interesting to see the art for those three.
God emperor has so much potential for crazy art that it would be a crime not too at least do that one
I would assume that if sales stay strong, they'll have to take a look at it. It would certainly allow the artists to lean into the weird and surreal. Perhaps they could look to launch the next trilogy around the release of Villeneuve's third film...I think the hype around the release of Dune Part Two helped them seel serious stacks of their version of Messiah!
@@chrisquinn3377 As I said towards the end of the video, I myself am 'satisfied' with the first three...for now. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't love the chance to check out some GEofD artwork in the future. Just give me a year or two between them so my wallet has time to recover!
apparently Folio society have confirmed to definitely be working on GEoD, and considering Heretics and Chapterhouse
@@Dan-vb7lz Oh boy...they just gonna' keep a guy broke, eh? Better start saving now!
I can't upgrade all of my favorite novels to Folio Society editions for two reasons. The first reason is that not all of my favorites are published by Folio. The second reason is that with many of my favorite books, I prefer other editions and my space is limited, so I'm not going to own multiple copies of the same novel. For example, my top five favorite novels are: The Time Machine, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, 1984, Moby Dk or The Whale (misspelled to keep yt from blocking my comment), and Dani Noir by Nova Ren Suma. Of those, Dani Doir never has and never will get a Folio Society edition. While I chose Folio for 1984, and will probably go with Folio for The Road, I chose the Easton Press for Moby Dk. I just felt like the leather over wood with the silk end pages was more appropriate for Moby. I also plan on upgrading my copy of The Time Machine with the Easton Press. Among some of my other favorite books, I'll probably upgrade Jurassic Park and The Lost World through Folio Society, and I recently ordered The Neverending Story from Folio (it hasn't arrived yet). Another exception is A Christmas Carol. Because I prefer the replica of its very first printing, I won't upgrade with either Folio or Easton. On another note, I recently heard about the Limited Edition Club, where you buy real first editions. I haven't checked them out yet, but I plan to. Though I probably can't afford to buy anything from Limited Edition Club. 😢
Finally, thank you
My pleasure! Didn't mean to keep you waiting...or were you talking about the release of the book itself? It's certainly been highly-anticipated.
@@Upgradeyourbooks Was talking about a youtuber that I watch (like you) making a thorough review! ;)
I was waiting for your review of the folio edition of Children of Dune as soon as I saw some of Hilary's art. Professional as always, appreciate the superb presentation 🍀💯📓
I'm glad I could deliver on your expectations. I really do enjoy Ms. Clarcq's work on the series! And thank you for more kind words of support. Are you going to be treating yourself to anything from the Fall Folio collection?
@@Upgradeyourbooks Sadly no, the folio ones are too expensive for me, but for now I have the Ace Deluxe edition box-set which is the second best in my opinion. I hope they publish God-Emperor so I can add it to my library someday 😄
@@martindiaries Agreed on the Ace Deluxe versions. They look great, and I'm sure you noticed, but I used clips of Matt Griffin's amazing covers because I really admire them. Do they all have coloured page-edges, and if so is it always the same blue colour? I'm sure they are making enough off them that they'll be eager to do the next three soon - hopefully you get your GEofD wish soon!
@@Upgradeyourbooks Yeah, they're all coloured, all in blue on the edges. If you want to get them they're definitely worth it, cheers 😄
I really appreciate your in depth videos. Expertly crafted in detail with your way of words. Keep up the good work.
Well, thank you for the kindness and support - glad you get something from my amateur attempts at book videos!
Great review of one of the nicest folio editions!
Thank you sir. And great tip on the 'cover in the sunlight' thing. Never would have caught that without you!
Excellent review of both the book and the production of each edition. You show a nice understanding for the illustrations as well.
Thank you for the kind words of support - talking about the art is my favourite part!
I am the proud owner of said folio society edition of the third policeman.
It sure is a great one, isn't it? The build is fantastic, and while some might find the black & white art less preferable to colour illustrations, I think that David Eccles did a wonderful job. Such a fine attention to detail in his drawings!
Flann o. Brien, one of Ireland's greatest writers, not as widely known as some of our many great writers, but he is achieving belated recognition.
Well said. I really do need to expand and read more of his work myself!
Thanks a lot I like your systematic approach to the comparison, a consistent process since your first video… If you can make a video about how you get your folios’ collection!
I will indeed make a video about how I built my collection. It's probably still a ways away, but once I've made my way through the whole collection, I will definitely put that together!
Thanks a lot I like your systematic approach to the comparison, a consistent process since your first video…
Thank you for the kind words and support. I really do try to look at the books in a methodical and systematic way - I'm actually borrowing from action figure reviews, believe it or not! They are always so predictable in their approach; they go over the sculpt and paint and articulation of the toy, and always in the same order even though many elements remain the same. The interest for me comes from the variations within that structure. I'm glad to know that how I'm doing it is 'working' for viewers like yourself.
Hi sir what is the exact spelling of eyyyye ?
@@IExist.Q86 Well I’m Canadian so it’s spelled “eh”, but sorta stretched out for some extra bite.
(15:07) Exactly my thoughts, It's not my favourite classic, but the folio edition is beautifully made. Great video as always 😄🍀
Thank you for the kind words on the video itself. As for the book, I'm not sure why so many place it among the greatest novels. It was solid enough, but I think I'm more of a Tolstoy guy myself!
Hello!
Howdy! Read any good books lately?
@@Upgradeyourbooks Not any official books, i have been reading a book my friend has been writing though. Anyway just wanted to support your channel. But don’t worry, i will definitely not let the Grapes of Wrath be the last book i read.

Awesome review, convinced me to pull the trigger and get myself a copy.
Thank you for the kind words on the review, and enjoy your copy when it arrives! It's a beautiful book!
All late but just got my absolute so good to know I got one of the better version (imo)
You did indeed get a good one. Does yours have a stitched-in ribbon bookmark? My personal copy doesn't have it, but I know some editions do! It's a little detail, but is something I'm curious about.
@@Upgradeyourbooks no sadly but gonna have a hell of a time reading after I get done with hellboy😁(keep it up!)
Edit:turns out I do have the red bookmark😃 make it much easier thank gof🙏
I just bought "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" by Joan Didion. I love the look and feel of this book. It is my favorite of my Folio Society books. I am a huge fan of Joan Didion and this is the book that made her Joan. Next I want "The Right Stuff" by Tom Wolfe and "Stalin The Court of the Red Czar" by Simon Seabag Montefiore.
Those are some great looking titles. When I get the catalogue, I always drool over the non-fic...but I force myself to stick to the novels. And that's still pricey enough as-is!
Thank you! I was baffled to learn that the version of Watchmen I've always read is a recolor. I found some scans of the original online, but I thought they were more saturated due to the quality of the scan itself. I personally think the changes are small enough to go unnoticed at first glance
You’re welcome! And you’re right - the changes are minimal and (in my opinion) almost always for the better. The colour is tightened up throughout so there is no missed sections, which only occurred in the original due to technology and time constraints. Beyond that a few of the harsh pinks, purples, and greens have been toned down to more subdued hues. Unlike so many other classic comic book recolours, I’d call this one both “thoughtful” and “conservative”. That’s the most respectful and appropriate way to do it!
Those illustrations are amazing, thank you for sharing!
My pleasure. The new productions with all the wonderful coloured art and the modern techniques are really cool. But there is something I especially appreciate about classic book illustration: lino and wood cut prints, pencil drawings, and top amongst them - pen & ink. The pure tactile artistic skill is so impressive - maybe because I’ve dabbled in them all myself? It makes what these traditional master-illustrators can do so awe-inspiring.
I’m not quite sure how to put this, but…I’m kind of a big deal…I’m very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
Everytime you said we have to eliminate this one it was like a stab direct to my heart lol Just kidding 😂
Oh don't worry - it hurt my heart each time too!
The Folio editions are awesome. I hope they complete the first 6 books. I keep these on the shelf next to a beautiful Centipede Press edition of Dune and Messiah, which will be a complete set of 6 Frank Herbert Dune novels.
I'm jealous of your Centipede editions! If they weren't so pricey on the secondary market, I'd be after them myself. They look amazing!
I’m currently reading from the Robert Laffont editions. Unfortunately there is no artwork but the quality is great and i’m enjoying every bit of it :)
I didn't know about this French publisher, but I did a quick search and they look great. I especially appreciate how they match in-series.Très jolie!
The video is congenial to the folio book. Sadly Folio does not sent books to Poland :( I have a one materialistic wish concerning literature and I can not buy a book :( I can buy every shit there is in the world, but one thing I wish is not available. Yes I am angry :)
It's too bad that you can't get it directly from Folio, but could you try eBay? I know the fees are high, but if you're patient you might be able to get a gently used copy to your door for around the same price it would have cost from Folio themselves. Much love and respect to Poland from us here in Canada.
I rarely spend this much on books, but I just had to have this edition of the book - I loved it so much that I picked up Dune Messiah as well. Hopefully Children of Dune is also in the works.
They do hurt the pocketbook, but there is some pretty good value there for the dollar! I also hope CofD is in the works...do you have a preference on which artist (Sam Weber or Hilary Clarcq) you'd like to see on it?
What a fantastic video! Just found your channel and I subscribed immediately. Very high quality and it’s clear how much effort you put into this! Keep it up!
Thank you so much for the kind words. I do indeed give it some effort, and I’ve learned a lot. I recognize that I’ve still got many wrinkles to iron out, but encouraging support like this helps me find the motivation to make the next one!
Just finished reading Dune this February. Best wishes everyone.
And tell me, did you enjoy it? Which edition did you read it from?
Lol you should have a drink or something before recording, you look like someone is off camera pointing a handgun at you :D
I’m pretty scared on-camera. You should see my earlier videos. Even more fear behind those eyes!
I think you would very much like the Suntup edition.
I think you’re right. I’m actively hunting a second-hand copy right now. Do you own a Suntup edition of this title yourself? Which do you recommend?
If your intent is to compare editions of the book, a plot summary is unnecessary and, frankly, a waste of time. We already know the plot. If we didn't, buying the FS copy would be WAY out of our consideration.
I like doing the plot summary, and I’m going to keep it for now. Sorry you feel that they waste your time, but thank you for the comment anyway!
Aaaaay......ce 0:01 is my go-to first choice to read the books first and then later collect them if I'm able and ready, willing to... 📖 📚 🏜 🌌 🗡 🐛 🧂 🌶
Ace is also my first choice for the initial read - I just love that trade trim-size. It’s the best for reading on the go!
I love Folio books but I haven’t bought any since the old mail order days when you got a bunch of books for 20 bucks with your promise to buy 4 at regular club prices in the year. Example; they gave me a 2 vol set of Robert Graves Mythology and the full 8 vol in 2 slipcases of The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. Now they no longer doo that so it’s less enticing to spend that money. I had mostly bought classics so that I could pass them down. The Dune books look beautiful. I have the old paperbacks with the Vincent DiFate cover illustrations from the 70s and 80s, those will always be special to me.
I buy most of my Folio’s second hand, and every once in a while there is an old card from the era you are describing tucked into the book as a page marker. Always an interesting artifact to come across - it would have been neat to be a member of the Society back then!
Those folios are beautiful but they cost so much I'd be scared to read them.
They are really nice. And they do cost a lot. They can only be an occasional luxury in my life. But the build and the binding quality is such that I don't fret a bit when reading them. I'm not the world's carefullest reader, and they hold up quite impressively to my mauling and thrashing!
Frank Herbert’s Dune was not an example of the hero’s journey but a warning of following false prophets.
When it comes to the whole saga, you’re absolutely right. But that first novel sure has all the elements of the classic hero’s journey story. Isn’t Paul fifteen at the beginning? Classic!
@@Upgradeyourbooksl
did you do a search on how to pronounce "Atreides".
Ha! Believe it or not, I actually did watch a video on it before hand. But you know how it is - you read it 'wrong' in your head for years, and you can't truly unlearn it. It becomes your core 'cannon' pronunciation. I tried to fix it in my subsequent Dune Messiah video, but even there I can hear my personal pronunciations creep through. Made-up words and places are the worst - I often reduce "Tleilaxu" to a half-grunt that starts with "T".
@@Upgradeyourbooks reading is not wrong and it's actually a point of pride, I've learned, that you actually first encounter the word from actually reading vs me just hopping on late and "knowing" from various tubers and the films and interviews what the pronunciations are, while I've YET to actually sit down to read the novels fully! So kudos! 🎉 📖 📚
Minor quibble, Atreides is promounced A-Traya-Dees
I did indeed fumbled the names! I tried to be mindful of this in my recent Dune Messiah video, but I messed up a few of them too. "Tleilaxu" still gives me nightmares!
@@UpgradeyourbooksAs far as I've heard, I think its pronounced "Lie-lax-oo". Take that with a grain of salt haha
@@oilyboy7243 Nothing like ‘official’ pronunciation on fictional/fantasy terms! Thank you though - Lielaxoo is much easier to say than the way I was imagining it was said!
@Upgradeyourbooks points for you, friend, that you actually read it first! My pronunciation I was lucky to get was from the film/s, so you're no slouch or johnny come lately but actually reading the books, not that others aren't reading the books. Just me, I gotta catch up! It's all good! 📖 📚 🏜 🗡
For your next video, we'll be comparing the new Porsche to a '73 Pinto Hatchback from a kit. Does Folio ever have sales? Because I'd like to buy more than one book at a time and still save on shipping. Also, has _The Name of the Rose_ ever been issued by them?
Ha. They do have sales, usually a couple times a year - the New Year sale and the Summer sale. However, it’s pretty rare that there’s actually a title I’m after at a reduced price in those sales. They tend to feature the less popular selections. Because I don’t live in the UK, the best deal that I typically wait on is the free shipping promo that occurs a few times throughout the year. And yes indeed, they have done The Name of the Rose. I believe it has been printed 4 times and is illustrated by my main man Neil Packer (he also did the Claudius novels, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Catch-22, the Divine Comedy, and the recent Shakespeare collection from Folio). You’ll have to hunt on the aftermarket for The Name of the Rose though. It’s not very rare and should only run you around 100 US including shipping and fees.
@@Upgradeyourbooks You don't think they'll reissue it?

Really love this edition, I'd never come across it before. That portrait of the abstracted face is beautiful. I didn't know that Sons & Lovers had been censored; I'll certainly keep an eye out for the unexpurgated version when I finally read it!
The artwork is pretty great on this one; the artist was well-selected to align with the book’s discussions about art itself. As for the unexpurgated version, the only issue for me was that it is even longer than the original, and I personally found the original text quite a long grind! Finally, I just wanted you to know that I haven’t forgotten about your past suggestion for me to take a look at the Kafka Folio books. I’ve managed to secure 3 of the 4 so far, and once I complete the set, I’ll start working out how I might present them!

Occasionally I read something for the first time from a Folio edition, but 9 times out of 10 it's something I read and enjoyed from my twenties, and revisiting it in my forties when I get the fancy edition is such a pleasure.
@@Upgradeyourbooks Just curious: do you happen to collect books from any other publishers? I really love the Limited Editions Club and Peter Pauper Press (both now defunct, though Peter Pauper Press still exists in name). I'm just re-reading Hamlet right now in the Peter Pauper Press edition and it's gorgeous!
@@Elizabeth-ei7ne I do collect books from other publishers from time to time. I have a half-dozen each from both Easton Press and Heritage Press. I think both might re-use a lot of material from the Limited Edition Club books. I'd love to get my hands on some of those some day, but apparently there aren't too many in northern Canada, as I haven't ever come across any in my regular book hunts. As for Peter Pauper Press, I'm going to have to go check them out online, as I haven't heard of them until right now! Which publisher accounts for the bulk of your own personal collection Elizabeth?
