Reviving an Idler - A Wooden Boat Restoration Ep 1
Come on sir time for an update.....
Thanks mate, great to see the theory of how to level a boat externally. Ive always plumbed off the cabin sole internally assuming it was set level long ways and side to side. Also in the comments the use of water as a level, great idea. Used to level foundations on buildings with a water level back in the day.
Great!!!
If you need a dig out or engine stuff looked at give me a shout. I stay in Anster cheers
Thanks Andy! Very kind, i will do!
How is Idler coming along? Good to see you back 👍🏻
Hi Eve, she is stable and standing by still. The work shop in the last video was completed over the winter and im getting round to her slowly. Who would have thought that one “extra” little person adds so much to your day!! 😂 everything remains in place and ready for the go when the opportunity arises. Idler will live again.
@@BothanboatsIdler Lovely to hear back from you, thank you. I remember it well when I had my son, no time to do anything other than looking after him. But that’s the way it works 🤩 He’s 31 now and I can’t believe how quickly time has passed. Enjoy your time. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻Regards Eve
I think the sculling. oar would be more efficient if the blade had a 15 or 20 degree hinge between blade and shaft like a fishes tail in not fixed on one plane it bends at the start of the stroke then flicks through 40 degrees to start the next stroke.
Hi Marlon, i see your thinking and i reckon that that would be a considerable engineering problem… however if you reimagine a skulling oars motion more like that of a snake swimming than a propeller turning it appears (to me at least less inefficient)… Food for thought at least 😊
this is so cool man
HATS OFF TO YOU GREAT STUFF GO WELL!!!!!
💯 *Promo sm*
Good to see you 😊
Looks like you had a good time! Hoping you can update us on Idler in your next video.. thanks! 😊👍
After departing Anstruther we motored through a heavily congested creel area off the Fife coast. Nick and I (Jim) were on the bow with high powered flash lights looking for creel markers in an effort to avoid picking up the marker buoy around our propeller. The rain was so heavy at times that we could not see more than 2 metres in front of the boat. The lightning was really intense, luckily not overhead as we had a big lightning conductor sticking up into the sky. At one stage, we saw what we initially thought was a big jellyfish. It was, in fact, a marker buoy just under the surface of the water, we were lucky!
Cheers Jim, it really was something fantastic to see!
A great wee adventure!
Thanks for the video. Although I know very little about fishing, I am fascinated by the history especially the boats. Can you confirm what type of fishing boats White Wing & Reaper are & whether there are any Zulus still in existence. BTW should I ask how the Idler project is progressing!!?? Chin-chin
The White Wing is a Fifie Baldie and the Reaper is a Fifie herring drifter. The Scottish fisheries museum web page has some very detailed information on both boats! Worth a look. Im so glad you enjoyed the video and have an interest in these old boats, they were really only built to have a service life of 20-30 years, and they are both over 100 now!!
I looked to see if I had missed any vids the other day and here you are. I see you are close to an update on Idler from a comment below. Looking forward to it. ATB.
Missed IDLERS updates-good to see you gain!
Totaly agree, ive an update ready, i just need to film the “conclusion scene” and ill upload. Ive been clawing back the time in the boat and focusing more on work over filming, but thank you so much for sticking with me!
@BothanboatsIdler we love the videos but I think we all agree we want to see the boat back in the water most!
Very cool. That old fishing boat exemplifies the type of vessel that inspired the tahiti ketch design. Must've been cool to sail on a boat like that who's still in her original fishing configuration.
It really was, shes a beautiful heavy sea boat! And remarkably stable with her sail up!
@@BothanboatsIdler I suspect my Tahiti will handle similarly, but there's a long restoration ahead before sea trials... By the way, how's Idler coming along?
Nice video, Will there be anymore on the idler??
Yes, soon! ive been focusing what little time i have on actual work over videos, but i have a wee update ready. i just need to film the "conclusion scene" and ill post it. Thanks for sticking with me!
Thanks for taking us along.
good to see you back
Thanks mate, been missing you

New subscriber - great descriptions. I’ve reviewed several of your videos and have to admire the perseverance. I sail a modern 35’ Catalina and also have recently recovered two (2) Wenaumet Kitten 13.5’ wooden catboats (1939, 1950) designed and built by my great-grandfather. Although both are packed tightly in my dry garage, I’ll need to construct a proper workspace in order to move forward. - SV Free Spirit - Tarpon Springs Florida
Thank you so much! That sounds really exciting! I wish you the best of luck with them! I hope they are in excellent condition!
If it wasn't for the pictures of how big your beautiful children are I wouldn't believe it's been so long! Happy that you're back and that the family looks happy as well. Welcome back.
Haha, yes! Tell me about it! And thank you
Рад видеть ваше возвращение. Спасибо, что не бросили кораблик! Дополню, что благодаря в том числе и вашему каналу я набрался смелости и купил старую парусную лодку
Hi just recognised Elie harbour. Im local to the East Neuk and would love to lend a hand if that’s something you would be interested in lmk?
Oh wow! Thank you! Yes! Could you DM me on facebook or instagram and ill be in contact! 🥰
Great to see you back... I have many of what I call "domino projects", projects which don't seem to be important and aren't much fun, but which enable other domino stones to fall giving suddenly the space and time to do the important and enjoyable jobs... Your "boat house" seems to be one of these... Again, great to see you again...
You are absolutely right! And its amazing how often a “session was lost” because im patching a leak or something!
Hey, it made my day to see you back - know it can't be easy with young family and all and Idler herself looks to have advanced well and with beautiful symmetry, well done :-)))
thank you so much! ☺️
Glad to see you back.
Aye, what a welcome notice. I didn’t realize how much I’d missed these posts. One of the best of the channels I follow. Carry on.
You are far too kind!! Thank you!
EXCELLENT to see you having the time and inclination to getting back to your Idler!!! I agree that building a "proper" boatshed will be well worth the effort. Good working conditions will engender and influence your enthusiasm for the project. Mucking about in the elements and mud are not conducive to furthering your project. I have missed your posts, which are always a tremendous learning experience for me! WELCOME BACK!!!! 👍😁👍
Wow! Your too kind! Thank you so much for you support and kind words! Your absolutely right. Theres only somany soaked through coveralls that one can handle! 🤣🤣
Glad your back! Great seeing you having fun with your children they must be a real joy. Don’t be discouraged with the boat reviving project look how far you have come not how far you must go. I have a small 16 ft Wayfarer that I did a refit and it took me much longer and cost way more than I expected. The results were great and justified the work. Your effort will be the same.
Thank so much for your support! I reckon i feel your pain! 🤣
I don't know which is harder building from scratch or rebuilding?
Haha! Definitely rebuilding! If i had my time again, id take the lines off her and build as if from new. Recycling old wood where possible!
Glad to see you back.
great to see you back, was only pondering the other day what might have happened. Looks like congratulations in order!
Thank you! still here, just ticking over!
Hard to hear you over the music
Oh! im sorry, i used a tool where the audio should have dipped when i was speaking. but it obviously needs turned up. Thanks for the feedback!
Nice to see you back at the idler. I know it's going to be a longterm project but that's fine by me.
Your too kind! :D thank you
Maybe your movement in the boat when trying to fit the floors racks the hull and changes things.
Good idea! i hadnt thought about that as she feels pretty solid under me. but Excellent idea, as if there is an imbalance somewhere with the supports this could well translate through. Thank you!
Welcome back. My wooden boat rebuilding or just building getting a bit far and few between.
Hi Andy, im sorry to hear that, i hope you find an opportunity to get back at her! thank you for your support!
Glad you are back but when you are talking could you stop the music please?
Hey, Sorry! i had used a tool that should have dipped the background music when i spoke. But it obviously didn't do it enough. ill dial it up on the next videos!
Good to see you caring on. Sustaining the momentum is the hardest part . Jobs , family ,chores ,all make fixing the boat go to the bottom of the list, but at least yy dare putting new wood in,which is huge. Keep up the adventure!
I have to admit its been a struggle at times! but the passion is still there. And thats the most important bit is rekon! thank you for your support!
@@BothanboatsIdler Good on you! I have just begun putting a shed-tent over a very old boat the I have only had for a short 22 years. A friend called the condition being boatstruck. I fear in maybe incurable. But as Churchill said,” when your going through hell, keep going”.
Haha, oog man! @@Pocketfarmer1 👍👍
Glad to see you back! 😊👍
Thank you! Glad to be! :D
Ah man, great to see yourself and idler again! And lovely to see that - well, it seems a bit kind of intrusive or familia to say, but lovely to see yourself and your family looking well and happy. Good on ya, and again, good to see you. :)
Haha, not at all! thank you! they are my world! :D glad to be back. I hope Susanna is ticking over?
Ah now - Well Susanna is about to be transported to the new yard/sailing club just around the corner from my house. In the meantime i've been fixing up another old wooden yacht so i can learn to sail and restore Susanna in a calmer, and hopefully, more quality way. Almost ready to launch her. :)) I hope your new work area is working out well! Cheers!
Thankyou for Repairing a fine litter ship I'm glad there are people like you who Sadly see a lot of these fine ships who no fault of their own have been left to rot .your space by the Shed and those trees remind me of Leo,s Tally Ho when he was at the farm when Tally Ho was in a very sorry state to what she is now and your doing just the same kind of work all the best from New Zealand
Thank you! Its an act of madness to be sure! :D
Welcome back, happy to see you again
Thank you so much! :D
So good to hear you’ve got back to Idler.... as father and grandfather I understand the pressures ...... but you’ll get there..... is there a case for asking for volunteers to help with heavy work/landscaping? After all it’s a beautiful part of the world! Best wishes from ☘️👍👨🏻👌
Its a wonderful Rodeo to be sure! and i console my self that one day they will have her and remember the work they did on her as children themselves.
good to see you back!
Thank you so much :D
Nice to see you back at it. Looking forward to more videos in the future. Best Wishes for your success.
Thank you, its great to be back. It cant be underestimated how motivating releasing these videos is to the project! thank you for watching!
