RC Planes on a BUDGET
These RC planes have been build on a budget costing under 50 dollars each. A simple age old design that has proven its self over the years to be good at almost anything. The design is a Zaggi wing cut using a Hotwire.
Both RC planes have no motors but can yet fly no stop for up to 8 hours on a single charge. The video shows these planes being flown on a hill using the updraft from the wind hitting the face of the hill and channeling upwards. In the RC world this type of flying is known as slope soaring.
Parts required to build..
- Zaggi wing ( can be cut using a hotwire from a block of foam )
- 2 servos of your choice
- Radio receiver of your choice
- 2 18650 batteries
- 2 servo linkages
- balsa wood
Music - I NEED A DLLAR, Kai.Wav & Aloe Blacc
Any questions please feel free to ask. If i get enough interest in how to build one of these wings i will do a build video.

How do you have sound? are you running an original DJI air unit?
This is insanely cool! What did you wrap the wings with?
What thickness was the carbon on the elevons? Is that thin carbon plate or just fabric glued down?
I have a Depron Versa wing with a full Speedy Bee FC, GPS etc....Even an HD backpack which can plug into the UART port....It flies 40 minutes on just a 2200mah 3S.....🤔😳🇬🇧
@@EnglishTurbines I use to have a versa wing and loved it. A great little wing and easy to build. That is a fantastic flight time and must be a lot of fun to fly fpv. The Speedy bees are a great little flight controller and cheap as chips…..Rotor Flex👍
nobody goes straight down lmao that was a dive straight down lol I understand a turn and slight dive then level straight so we can see a real avg top speed
your vids where you edit the footage in sync with the progression of electronic music are best.. Things like closing the field gate on a beat, positive daft punk vibes creating hopeful anticipation as you approach the field in the 6s dolphin vids. lol . And pairing the video with a topic like planes on a budget is a great idea.. I started flying RC 6 months ago with a plane I made out of real estate advertising board (we call it corflute here in OZ). i definitely would have searched for this video title.
Thanks for the inspiring comment, it’s definitely nice that you noticed the edited in my videos as there is a bit of work and planning timing the videos around the music. Daft punk is one of my old time favourites for sure. Hopefully people can see the joys and bonus of slope soaring in the video and help bring back this RC dying type of hobby. I intend to build an fpv version of this wing to try soaring from an fpv perspective with an onboard flight controller and osd to help find lift….. Rotorflex👍
That’s seriously fast, what a weapon!! fantastic footage that you have captured. It really is a lovely part of the world!! Gareth is so lucky to own all that land that you fly on. Keep up all the good work, really enjoy the videos 👍👍
@@MrMadmac38 thanks buddy, much appreciated. It’s been a fun build and still is as I’ll keep pushing until it makes the 200mph mark. The last comment had me wetting myself for a short period of time 😂😂
This really a great build . please let us know more detail about the battery ,the motor and the props
Should have gone IDS instead of external push rod
I wonder how you gripped the Dolphin at maidn launch. You cutter the landing skids away. How you grabbed it?
@@mauritz1774 well done and well spotted as you are the first to ask. I have added two 1mm carbon fiber fins on the bottom to allow a hand hold area without adding extra drag. Thanks for the comment…..Rotorflex👍
I seen an 12S Dolphin here on UA-cam
@@mauritz1774 yes I’ve also seen it. Very inefficient setup as he is double the voltage and only making an extra 14mph. I intend to break his record using only 6s……Rotorflex👍
Great work! It's hard to push aa Dolphin that fast! Impressive that you do it with such a low pitch prop too! I would love to fly with you guys, you have a great field these for landing fast stuff! I have a 500kmh+ fpv plane on 14s, but really struggling to find a spot to fly it again! I normally fly at a full-size airfield, but there are so many Cessnas appearing out of nowhere to do touch and goes, it is not ideal! Would you welcome another like minded flyer?
@@OMEGOOLIEBIRD an FPV speed legend is always welcome to fly with us! I have been a fan of your videos for many years but I think you are in the Mainland and we are in Northern Ireland. You are welcome anytime so if you are in NI drop me a message and come fly buddy. My latest achievement with the Dolphin maxed out at 176mph still with a quad motor in my latest video. I will have to move to an inrunner to beat it but I’m keen to push the airframe to 200mph. The comment is much appreciated and I hope to see you at our field👍
Awesome and entertain video !! Thanks for sharing . Keep up
Thanks man, hopefully when my new motor arrives I can break the 200mph mark….Rotorflex
Finally... a real speed test that is not a dive. Nice work on this really appreciate the mods to go faster! I have a Dolphin and run it with 5s but was not looking at really high speeds, although it is capable of 120 mph. I do have a Strix Goblin and my top for it on 4s is 140 mph. I know many go faster but like the way they fly so effortless at speed have not modified it more. Currently working on a Nano Goblin and doing some of the same tricks you have done here to beat the current speed record with it on 6s. Great video, appreciate the detail to go fast!! Oh, one more thing... have a look at the EMAX Avan props. They are, in my testing way better than one would think at high speed. A 6x3.8 is faster than it should be and still has some bottom end power so stalling is not an issue.
Thanks man, the Goblins are a fantastic airframe and you will have a lot of fun with it. I’ll be sure to try the prop you mentioned on my next speed run. I have ordered a new motor with the hope of breaking the 200mph so keep an eye out for a further video to come……Rotorflex👍
Nice mods it looks stable at high speeds. Speed runs should start at level flight and end at level flight, everyone does it but dives don`t count
Agreed, going for a motor upgrade and we will hopefully break the record on a level run. Cheers……Rotorflex👍
Awesome 👍
Thanks man, this is one of my local fly sites and by far my favourite 👍
Big investment of your technology please sir
That looked like fun m8....😀😀🤔😏😏🇬🇧
Yes my friend, was a super day with plenty of lift 👍
I so envy you this has been one of my lifelong dreams
Thanks you buddy, you should book yourself in with a flight school to give it ago or maybe try a tandem flight👍
Amazing!
Tom, cheers buddy. Was an interesting build for sure.👍
Hi. What is the flight time?
@@sebastiantomczyk4577 on a custom build 6s 4500mah I can get around 25 minutes on this motor setup. A longer flight time would be achievable by a lower kv motor and larger prop. I have heard of some people achieving 45 minutes with a good motor setup….Rotorflex
@@torquedude thank you so much for this and other answers 😊😊😊 have a good time with this plane!
@@sebastiantomczyk4577 happy to help👍👍👍
Yes but how fast does it Go I have one with a custom set up that goes 206 miles an hour 😊
@warbirdflyerF4U what motors are you using?
Is there any difference between pusher and puller propeller planes?
@@sebastiantomczyk4577 good question. There is a lot of controversy around this subject what is better but in general here is a few differences between the two. A tractor prop receives clean air with no turbulence from the fuselage body. It allows the control surfaces to be active at low speeds as the prop is forcing air over them making the plane easier to control at low speeds on takeoff. A pusher prop plane is harder to launch as the control surfaces are 100% reliant on airspeed as the prop isn’t forcing any air over them. Pushers are noisy due to being fed by turbulent air passing over the fuselage. A plus with a pusher is the wash is less turbulent therefore creating less drag. Depending on the type of air frame a pusher can help achieve the centre of gravity by adding weight to the rear of the plane. There is many more pros and cons to these setups but that would be the main points I recon…..Rotorflex👍
@@torquedude these are correct, but what about plane maneuverability in the air. Is pusher plane as good as its counterpart puller when it comes to maneuvering?
@@sebastiantomczyk4577 tractor wins hands down due to the air from the prop being forced over the control surfaces. That’s why all 3D planes are tractor and not pusher……Rotorflex👍
For anyone interested in how to calculate pitch speed into miles an hour Is the formula is as follows Kv. X volts X pitch X.000947 X drag coefficient. ! Most flying wings have a d.c. of .7 to .75 drag coefficient! Trainers are .6. Jets may be .75 to .8. Example 2200 kv.x16.8 volts x 5.5 pitch x .75 d.c x .000947= 144 mph
@@warbirdflyerF4U brilliant, thanks for posting as most aren’t aware of such an equation. You can also use the online mr D prop calculator, I use it for all my speed setups for the theoretical top speed of the motor prop setup inline with the inputted voltage ( battery ). Again thanks for posting and feel free to share your knowledge with others as this is the true hobbyist spirit…. Rotorflex👍👍👍
I thought pitch speed was simply propeller speed for a given RPM. Isn't that what you provided a speed estimate for a given motor, prop, battery, airframe combination?
@@Andy-df5fj yes but the one thing you can’t calculate for is the airframe drag. The calculation is also theoretical and doesn’t allow for real world such as air density/pressure. It gets you close if you are wanting to attempt a given speed. That’s why I cleaned the airframe up as much as I could to reduce as much drag as possible but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. My next move is a different motor and prop combo. Hopefully I can break the 200mph mark next run……Rotorflex👍
@@torquedude Exactly right that is why I provided a theoretical drag coefficient
@@Andy-df5fj We are calculating pitch to miles an hour Not pitch speed Which is more of propeller tip speed calculation
Yes I am running a high kv inrunner On 4S with a cut down cam speed propeller Really loved seeing The Mods you made ❤ I will have to incorporate a few of them into my next build Go get him buddy Switch to more pitch and less diameter and you will get more speed
@@warbirdflyerF4U that’s awesome. Good to hear that there is still some knowledgeable modellers out there who understand that a smaller prop and more pitch means more speed. A lot of people on UA-cam think a larger prop is the answer when it’s not. Cutting down the prop is something I use to do in my old nitro days, I must give it ago and see if I can gain a little more speed with the pitch aggression. Again thanks for the comments and check out my latest speed run videos. I’m about to head out to attempt a 200mph run so wish me luck buddy…..Rotorflex👍
Great job my friend😊 What pitch prop are you running you need to go smaller diameter more pitch that will equate to more speed 😊 I proved it on my funjet and my dolphin ! I'm running a 4.25 by 5.5 cut down camspeed prop and reaching 185mph in level flight and 206 from a shallow dive ! 4s high kv. Inrunner !! Hopefully soon I will be able to make and post a video 😊 I'm rooting for you rotor flex 😊
You guys are doing awesome I love the competition ❤ I will have to figure out how to upload a video and start my own channel I already have you guys beat by a mile Both my funjetand my dolphin go over 200 mph. Pito tube and gps confirmed 👌
@@warbirdflyerF4U that’s awesome, you must be using an In runner motor to achieve those speeds? Upload your videos as they will do extremely well on UA-cam buddy. Thanks for the comment and look forward to the footage…..Rotorflex👍
Doing a speed run in a dive is like taking a picture of your wiener up close with a wide angle lens and saying you have the biggest 🐓 in the room.
@@The_regular couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately the rest of the Dolphin community are claiming their top speed run numbers by recording max speed in a near vertical dive like the 12s Dolphin and Jeff’s latest run. Only way to compete fairly is to do the same. The other airframes can’t sustain any kind of high speed passes when on the level unlike mine. It would be better to do a horizontal plus vertical speed run to get a better comparison of power and aerodynamics. Thanks for the comment and the 🐓 emoji definitely gave me a laugh. Cheers……Rotorflex👍
@@torquedude I think after my drak died I want to build a speed dolphin, I used to have one when they first came out it’s a great airframe! I could get mine over 120MPH on 4S with a badass 2320 1800KV
@@The_regular awesome buddy, a 4s dolphin is definitely capable of high speeds with the correct setup. Horizon mode?
@@scottyh72 the horizontal run was in horizon mode and the dive was in acro mode. I carried out a lot of testing in acro mode as horizon can mask a lot of issues, I believe that’s why my older versions crashed due to rolling on their own at high speed. Thanks for the comment buddy…..Rotorflex👍
@@torquedude Horizon is scary af. I fly acro only, even vtol. Inav puts I term in the levelling loop, that doesn't work. They need to run more I term in acro so all the accel needs is a set point, but Darren thinks acro is manual with some P term. Dumb.
@@scottyh72 interesting. I must admit that I have gotten lazy over the years with fixed wing and find myself using horizon more often but will fly quads acro only. Thanks for the info and I’ll stick to acro from now on with fixed wings. A lot has definitely changed regarding Fc tuning. What is SHIM? Never heard of
@@sebastiantomczyk4577 a Shim is used to space or align, it can be many different shapes and sizes to suit the desired outcome. I made my own Shim to correct the motor mount angle so the motor thrust is inline with the wing cord. The Shim was made from ply wood. Hope that helps and that’s for the comment……Rotorflex👍
@@torquedude do I see correctly, did you mount that shim with some angle? I guess thats for compensaton of the initial angle that prop was installed. But why the producer included in its design this angle?
@@sebastiantomczyk4577 great question. Atomrc has designed the dolphin to fly at low and mid speeds ( 15 to 100mph ). On the original design the combination of motor up thrust, downward facing winglets and tapered tail fins allow the dolphin to be very stable at low speeds. I had to remove these features to achieve the high speeds on 6s but at a cost. My dolphin is no longer stable at low speeds so I have to land a little faster than normal. Atomrc have definitely done a great job with their design but I want to see how far I can push this airframe…..Rotorflex

Id apply lightweight glass cloth and epoxy to the wings to give them rigidity and a high gloss finish. Balsa Elevons....This is the occilation cause in the dive....You need an eight inch pitch prop to go faster. The prop could also be holding it back....Gliders go faster...lol...😏😏🇬🇧
@EnglishTurbines, During the flight i thought all was well until i was editing the video and seen the occupations at max speed. The wings have been shortened to reduce the leaver affect plus drag, the laminate is extremely strong making the wings very stiff but part of me now wishes i had glasses them to remove all doubt. The main thing is that i still have full control at high speed and no unwanted rolling is occurring. I am using a 5x5 speed prop at the moment with a 2200kv motor, A larger prop is an interesting concept to me and believe me your not the first to suggest this on youtube but it has always went against what i have been taught and learned from my fast nitro days. The theory i was taught was a smaller prop will allow the engine to rev out in the air and not act as an airbrake (windmilling) when the engine is getting close to its peak rpm allowing a little more extra top end speed and performs better in a dive that a larger prop. I am definitely willing to give the larger prop ago as you have suggested so i will match it with a lower kv motor to stop me melting another one. Some gliders definitely go faster, i have quite a few models that will outperform this dolphin but i want to keep pushing this little PNP foamy to see what i can get out of it for giggles 🤭. Thanks for your comment and the suggestions. I will let you know how i get on with trying a larger prop..... Rotorflex 👍🏼
