The Last Summer (Story Behind the Song + Live Acoustic)

The Last Summer started in my kitchen, where there's an old piano that I try and learn how to play occasionally. I was playing Secret Garden by Bruce Springsteen over and over, the descending piano line - how it always denoted a sense of loss to me. I don't know if that's what the boss intended, but his music always reminds me of growing up. I was thinking about the relationship between univers...

    I’ve never thought about creating a world every time I song write, but it just makes total sense. The art of nostalgia is quite a marvelous gift once you know how to use it, you’d get lost in the universe of your own creation. Thanks Tyson and friends for sharing!

    Lyrics You were loudly living On your final ninety pounds Crosslegged on the south porch With a bible in your hand And when I prayed for healing My father's words rang through the door Son I don't think Jesus is in business Of healing anymore Well maybe he is occupied with other people's wars Or he's organized militia to fight the war on Christmas Or maybe he's protecting our children from the gays Who have promised to destroy this utopia we've made In His name In His name In His name The early fathers writing To build a younger church up tall Saying faith without the action isn't anything at all I know perspective isn't static Between what I see and what you do But if you choose to stand by idly, then what does that make you? Well I hear that you've been speaking through the man on the tv And you've helped the Dallas Mavericks with their field goal percentage So when my mother's doctor calls again with more bad news It's an honest heart's reaction Oh who, my God, have you been listening to? Been listening to? Have you been listening to? In Your name In Your name In Your name In Your name

    This song debuted when my husband was just at the beginning of converting to the Catholic faith. He played it for me and to this day I feel that it gives me a connection to him that I didn’t quite have before. I was raised Catholic, held on loosely while attending evangelical churches with him the first 12 years of marriage, then needed to return with everything I had. He decided to really try to understand and he ended up entering the Church. It’s been such a beautiful and scary ride… listening to this again because I wanted to share with a friend. Such a great song-thank you!

    This song is beautiful, convicting, and it still manages to make me smile. Wonderfully done. Thank you for your courage to share some of the dustier, grittier sides of what it looks like to be a Christian. It's not always perfect, we're allowed to doubt and question the way we are doing things in the name of God, and that's totally okay.

    Sorry that you had this bad experience with things in your life, hell fire and brimstone teaching is what it seems like you experienced, and it can be taught without any heart of God in it to try to scare people into being Christian, but there is a hell and a heaven and one God on the throne and the message to be spread was about the salvation and redemption through Jesus Christ and LOVE! But sadly people are turned away by people or pastors and their “religious” bondage that excludes the relationship with God, not to say that hell doesn’t exist but the point of the gospel was someone paid for our sins we just got to accept him in our hearts, he loved us enough to die for us, i hope you can feel his love despite human misrepresentation

      I don't think he's denouncing that one can be emotional about thier faith (even collectively). Its more so that faith needs to be more than having a good cry or catharsis. I'm sure the Pentecost was definitely full of collective emotions but the disciples were not chasing that feeling afterwards, they let it strengthen them and moved forward.

      @jtcupo@gmail.com Church has become cookie cutter and more traditional in their structure but it's not all about that. The heart of it is the two person way of just you and God. Church is for community and to "sharpen that iron" but that also can happen on the weekdays. Christianity is the religion around the relationship with God/Christ/Jesus/Holly Spirit, (whichever you fancy they are all the same guy). So talk to Him sometimes, no need for some fancy prayer or a scheduled church service, He's a friend that wants to point you in the right direction and help ya out when you ask for it, well, most of the time : )

    I love hearing the meanings behind songs. I really enjoyed this song when I first heard it because the studio version is upbeat and really pleasant to listen to. After hearing the meaning behind it, it definitely makes me think twice about the lyrics. I was raised in the catholic faith so the religious references in the lyrics really stood out to me. Now I have a better sense of the story behind the song. Thanks for sharing this personal story with the internet!

    This has been one of my all-time favorite songs since it came out. I just now watched the music video, and I'm not entirely sure that I feel it compliments the lyrics super well? Still processing for sure! And it seems it's maybe depicting Tyson's journey on his walk up the coast and trying to cope whilst seeing super 'Christian-ese' stuff all over and not necessarily feeling comforted, then feeling conflicted standing alone on the beach in the end. That's my assumption in any case! Although I'm going into the music video knowing a good amount of the background, so I don't know that a new listener would be able to pay attention to the narrative of the story and the narrative of the music video at the same time, if I guessed the narrative right. But I don't know! Maybe I'm over thinking it. Regardless the video is beautiful and the song is a masterpiece. Thanks for your work Tyson!

    • @emberexi
      @emberexi 2 роки тому

      I think it's more of a character sketch and not intended to be a literal storytelling of Tyson's own journey... My interpretation of the video is that it's a vignette, with no small irony, almost a perfect "snapshot" along the journey of a possibly lukewarm believer or skeptic who is gifted with a curious and creative eye. He appears to be very much engaged in - and perhaps at times idolizing - his own perceptions and experiences of the world, and yet still very much at the mercy of the Lord's guiding hand. As a photographer myself, I can relate to the character's wandering curiosity and willingness to engage in the stories of other people to find deeper meaning in his own path. There is a part of me etched in my boyhood that will never forget the incredible fire God lit up in my soul as His creativity came alive and inspired me to reflect it all straight back to Him for His glory, but there are definitely times when my views on His children, their actions and interpretations, and all of what's supposedly done "in the name of Jesus" are often very limited to a single experience or a mood or a very self-centered moment in time. But when I look back across all of those moments, those heightened little sparks of attention where I have ultimately been focused on God's constantly unfolding creation - in me, around me, and in others - I end up reflecting on Him completely... and realizing how deeply focused He has been on *me* all along.

    My mom has been fighting cancer for two years now, and this song hit me like a rock. Your lyrics show such beautiful, child-like faith and a frustration with the church for focusing on trivial issues instead of a simple and loving gospel. That’s what we're all about. Thank you for this little reminder to be grateful.

      Hi Hunter. This is Tyson. The line is referring to the way the evangelical church has acted in a self defense position instead of a caring and compassionate one. There’s a great article on NPR if you google it about this song. Thank you for being curious and not reactionary.

      Pretty broad brush here. Telling sinners sin leads to death is love. If you think otherwise you are not loving people. Jesus always openly spoke agaInst sin and the dangers of the present and future it brings. He is/was not a free love hippie. He wants a new life for us where Her sets us free of what sin does. @@TysonMotsenbocker

      To quote Tyson directly: "The line is referring to the way the evangelical church has reacted in a self defensive position instead of a caring and compassionate one." This isn't what Tyson believes. He's angry at campaigns in the Church that do this, because it's Wrong, and that is NOT what Jesus is about. To quote Isaac Peabody "My God loves ALL of his children."

    • @NoNonsense77
      @NoNonsense77 5 місяців тому

      God didn't make you gay. You have chose to sin and Satan leads you to sin. So try again. Also not what the song is saying. It is a sin. God made you to not be captive by sin so et Him set you free.

      Thank you, Marina for reaching out. I live in Japan as a missionary and have been back to the states twice now to be with my Mom and help take care of some needed business on her behalf. She is a strong believer and has had peace through all this. She has periods when her train of thought just cut off. She hasn't been in any pain and we are thankful for the time we have had together. I appreciate your words very much.
