Great video! Enjoyed it so much that I've ordered your book! After many years of only trout on the fly, I'm making 2025 a coarse year. Cheers!
Many thanks Ian- and happy reading!
Nice one, Dom! 🎣🐟👍
Thanks John! It was a great day, an eye-opener for me- and a great example of what's possible when someone is really passionate about the tackle they produce. It needn't be all about the Far East and bargain tat- independent, British-made quality right there!
great quick release fly anglers do seem to be so much better in every way i once was rough and stupid with fish i now at 57 try to encourage ppl GET EM BACK ASAP
Good man, Scott. Exactly- they deserve total respect and these days there are no excuses. If we want to keep enjoying our pike fishing, we must look after every one we catch.
Brilliant stuff Dom, just listened to you Fly Culture Podcast, ordered your book straight after, asking for a fly outfit for Christmas!
Many thanks! In the nick of time, too- down to the last two FFCF books now. Hope you enjoy it- and good luck getting the fly outfit from Santa!
Nice!!! Can i ask which score sheet music you are using? (Notv the Consolation)
I don't play this from sheet music, only the head is from the original or anything written down. It's in several fake books and quite a simple arrangement- if you're learning it I'd advise a similar start, just play the head and then find your own ideas. It's quite a straightforward, free tune, works really well with a blues scale and simple open chords in the LH. I should really record again because this is now 4 years on! So many possible routes through this tune- wishing you enjoyment finding your own. Go for it and express yourself!
Ey up Dom. good to see that nets still on ya. Glen would be proud of ya. Top angling. Been doing a fair bit of bass but I’ll give the mullet a go after I’m done on the pike. Hope you’re keeping well lad lad.
Back in 70s used to catch crucians at Embley Park pond and Ice house pond , both Test Valley Angling club waters . When I was taking A Levels after exam used to reward myself with an evenings crucian fishing , pack all my tackle on my motorcycle and off fishing . They used to fish best in the evenings or early morning on bread flake size 12 hook 2.5 lb line . Happy Days
Who is the major company they make floats for?
Nice. What line weight were you using ?
A four weight (and the rod is a 10ft). Feels about right for this fishing. Light enough to cast gently- but enough poke to play the fish. Long rods are really useful where wading isn't an option or banks are overgrown and you need that reach.
Thanks 👍 You do mention it at the beginning of the video 😅 Sorry about that .
Just watched a very scary documentary about micro plastics and this popped up, look great floats though 😆
Have you thought about making floats in that real tree camouflage. In various shades and colours such as wintery camo for winter fishing.
Of course they weren't so tricky to catch back in the days of unprocessed sewerage outflows- them beauties had lumps of fat on their insides. Good baits- earthworm, tiny shrimp, and steak.
Back in the 60's we used to fish the drainage stream from Southwick lake (HMS Dryad) and the pool by Southwick bridge for crucians and the flash of gold was fantastic. The biggest one we caught was 2 1/2 lbs. Now all these years later my wife and I travel up to Marsh farm in Milford to fish for them.
Ive had 3 orders from Bob all the floats and service top notch
Good stuff Dom 👍keep them coming I’m a fan!!!!
Bob’s floats are brilliant 👍🦆🎣
Very good floats, good to see behind the scenes
Great skill nice to see hard work pays
So easy to.make your own. Anglers are all clones today
I love making my own kit- it's so rewarding to catch on your own stuff. But what I would say is you will never make floats of this quality in your garage! And they will make bespoke floats to your exact specifications if you want something nobody else is using.
Who bothers to make their own pole float, the material and the machining would be much more than buying them. Even the tightest anglers I've met in Yorkshire buy floats.
Really enjoyed that. Great insight ❤
Do you only make pole floats?
Alan, it's worth getting in touch with RWC or visiting the website. They make things like pellet wagglers and stick floats but can also make items to order- they do a lot of bespoke stuff.
@@domgarnettfishing Thank you. I used to make floats years ago. I still use the same stick float that I designed when fishing rivers. I’ve never found anything better to use. I went through every design on the market at the time but none of them really worked properly. I’m really surprised today that none of the manufactures have thought about what I use. I even got a patent for a fishing float. I was interested in your video because I know how hard you must have worked to reach where you are today. Well done. My life now days is writing. I’ve got several books published. I still go fishing though.
A great day, using great floats 👌
Indeed! They are top notch- I could not believe the toughness of the materials, just different gravy to what we once used. Especially when I look back at my fishing life and the amount of trashed pole floats!
That was bloomin’ brilliant! Thanks Dom
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it! It was almost reassuring to see that many floats and think "my collection is actually pretty modest, no matter what my wife says" 😂
Lovely filming - would love to fish this river. MUST fish this river. I was enjoying watching this, when it suddenly dawned on me that I recognised the chords in the music in the first few minutes. Killing the blues! Love that tune too. Original by Rowland Salley, ruined by Robert Plant and Krauss - smashed by Chris Smither. Leaves are falling indeed...
Have you stopped the brown trout removal from upper Dartmoor for the Benifit of salmon & sea trout??? If not are you stocking the West, East Dart and so on?
Nice vid , hey did you know a gent called Keith Percival in the Midlands area , he sadly passed away and his wife donated his fishing gear for a charity , i bought a lot of his fly gear . Also your book FLY FISHING FOR COURSE FISH , i never met him . All the best , David.
Many thanks David. I'm afraid I didn't know him, but RIP to a fellow angler- and lovely to hear his gear went to help a good cause. I hope the book has proved useful.
Well done chaps a lovely video ! Yes the fish pass is a brilliant scheme Amazing waters and great fishing 🎣 Keep up the good work 👏
Thanks Neil. Amen, it's a great scheme, long may it continue!
Great video Dom and James…the Fish Pass is a great and easy way to book and access your lovely local rivers …James, if I may ask, where could I get a pair of the knee protectors you were wearing in the video…I need a pair these days and yours looked very comfortable over your waders …thanks for any help you could offer me
Great film. Being illusive and so challenging makes mullet all the more attractive.
Hi Dom, thanks for the inspiration, I’ve just spent my first afternoon on the Lyn, downstream of Watersmeet, I wasn’t sure if I was rock climbing or fishing, but despite being way outside of any previous experiences I managed to fool a couple. I’m looking forward to more exploring, and what great value!
Grt to see pike welfare in action
red head diawl backs, and size 14 whiskey flies that salmon fishers use, great video 👍👍🎣
Nice casting video with porn music 😂
What kind of porn are you watching 👀 ?
Anyone who’s pursued mullet knows how infuriating they can be, you find them and sometimes it feels impossible. But it’s sooo worth it for the fight, my lord they scrap like you would not believe. They are in a different league to other UK species lb for lb.
Great film, manny thanks 👍
Isn’t that brilliant! I love the tenacity of you both. Rodney is a star, the fact that he could so easily catch other fish so easily; and yet he wants that challenge of the beautiful mullet. That’s so inspiring. Dominic always pushing your boundaries and finding out about other anglers passions and then editing so wonderfully for us to enjoy. Thank you both I really enjoyed that. Regards David
Awesome! I just started catching catfish on fly… I caught an 8lb catfish on my 4wt setup.. 😅 I’m definitely going to upgrade..
Just discovered your channel. Some beautiful films but you do need to calm down with the music, it's always way too loud which is a shame since I think otherwise they could be a lot more popular.
Great action, music was excessive though
Very good clip. I fish for them at home here in Australia and although they’re considered a pest fish they’re a very worthy target . Fly fishing for carp has become popular here as well.
Great music choice👍🏼
Superrrr 👍🐟😜
Superrrr 👍🐟😜
Great video. I'm off to Albury Estate to try for carp on Thursday! Excellent advice! 😊
Many thanks, glad the advice was helpful- and good luck with your next session!
i come from mid beds and 30 /40 years ago we used a birds custard with flour and water mix to fish for crucians in a small pond i think now i'm going back to see whats about
Custard powder? Makes sense when you think about it- good protein source! Did you make a paste type bait out of it?
we did make a paste and the bait had to be very small on a size 16 thank for a reply
Always enjoy your articles Dom, didn't know you had the UA-cam channel! Fantastic videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them and put them up - a real slice of real fishing
Thanks so much, Tom! Yes, I've been doing more film lately. Perhaps a sign of the times? Writing is very much my first love, but it's becoming harder and harder for print. Pleased you're enjoying the videos too- thanks for watching!
@@domgarnettfishing hopefully sense prevails and there's still a place for the written word. It's truly the best way. But film is good as well! And yours are superb mate. Thank you again for taking the time and effort to make them for us
I'd been playing some bossa novas with a band but always struggled doing it solo. Hearing you do it gave me a complete breakthrough. Thanks!
That's great to hear! I'm so glad you had a breakthrough. For me, the key to playing this as a solo piece was establishing a simple, strong bass pattern. I hope you enjoy playing it and developing your ideas further! 🙂
Wonderful - been ages since I've fished for crucians!
Great to meet you at Abshot Dom, shame about the lack of Cru's. How about a trip to another Pdas paradise, the River Wallington for a big Gudgeon day, Mark knows all about the Wally Gonks 😉
Sounds brilliant! Might been in Looe part of September, but keep me posted because I'd love to return - great club and lovely waters.
What a beautiful fish they are sadly so many of them are still not showing in numbers as they were
Indeed, they are so cute- and so nostalgic for many of us! There's still hope though- and a bit of a revival in some areas. I guess the advantage of smallish lakes is that unlike our polluted rivers, it's less complicated to sort the habitat out. I also think there is a quiet appetite out there for more carp free lakes to keep that true strain of crucian we love to see. Folks like Portsmouth DAS and the Angling Trust's National Crucian Conservation project deserve a big pat on the back on this.
Great video mate 👌🎣 usually I flyfishing for pike but this summer I wana try carp fly fishing, bait fishing for carp its easy but the fly fishing for carp or any other fish it's a art🥇 Thanks for a video really enjoyed its something diferent than those circus videos on YT, yours is calming and very informative! Definitely subscribe and looking forward 👍🏻
Many thanks- I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's a tough one, isn't it with today's media. So much of it is crash, bang, wallop or a very clickbait style approach. Good luck in your carp on fly fishing- it's such a lovely way to tempt them.
