Hope you enjoy this video on the Skoda Kamiq Monte Carlo. Apologies for the poor sound between approx 2 mins and 6 mins of the video. I was trialling out a new place to do my car reviews and whilst it did not seem that noisy whilst filming the videos, when it came to the editing there was a lot of background noise. Unfortunately I was unable to re-record it due to only having access to the car ...

I'm looking at buying something to replace my 8 year old Suzuki Celerio. Like the Picanto, it has a robotised manual gearbox. With mine, you can drive it in full auto-mode (this is how wifey drives) or in a semi-automatic mode where you can tap the gear lever up or down to select the gear you want. Is this how the Kia box works too? Before I bought the Suzuki, I owned a manual 1.0L manual Picanto but the previous model. I never really took to the car & was frankly glad to see the back of it. My gripes were the lack of space (fixed with newer models) & its fuel economy. I drive like the Pope's mother & try as I might, I couldn't get it to average more than 56 mpg. This was worse than the Daihatsu Sirion it replaced (62 mpg) & the Celerio (70 mpg). If you drive your Picanto really, really sensibly, what kind of mileage can you achieve or is 57 - 58 mpg the absolute best it will do? Thanks

I think the negativity is because it is basically an "assisted manual". There is a manual gearbox but there are parts doing the gear changing for you, hence no parking slot on the selector. I'm looking at a new one at the minute and trying to see videos of it in action

Wifey bought her Toyota Aygo with a robotised manual gearbox in 2005 & it performed flawlessly for 11 years. She replaced the Aygo with a Suzuki Celerio, also with a robotised manual, in 2016 which has been brilliantly reliable. I liked the car so much I bought one for myself! Wifey drives her's uniquely in auto-mode. I tend to use mine mainly in manual-mode but if I'm stuck in slowly moving traffic, I'll flick it into auto to make things easier. Both cars happily return 70 mpg & have done consistently for the last 8 years...and of course that's the big advantage over a conventional torque converter auto.

Just watched this again after watching many videos in trying to decide what car to go for. Your review really helped me make the choice as it was very in-depth but also understandable to a novice about cars. We had a Kodiaq and while it was an amazing car it got to the point where I just didn't need the size. Now have a Kamiq Monte Carlo and it really is a pleasure to drive (and look at :) ) - Thanks.

My dad used to have a WJ Grand Cherokee when I was a kid, and me and my family consider it to be one of the most comfortable cars we've ever owned. This is my story about it: It was July 2010, and we were on our way in my mum's Vauxhall Zafira to pick up my dad’s new car to replace his old Vauxhall Frontera, a 2002 (52-reg) Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7-litre Chrysler PowerTech V8, finished in a dark metallic blue with a black leather interior. As we were driving the last few hundred yards to the seller’s house to collect DU52XKW, I caught first sight of it in the windscreen, and after we pulled up at the seller’s house, we got out of our car and went over to inspect it. The main reason why me and my family consider it to be one of the most comfortable cars we’ve ever owned, and why I also consider it to be one of my favourite cars my family has ever had, was the seats, as they were some of the most comfortable of any car I had ever, ever sat in - from the moment 10-year-old me sat down on them for the first time, I was in heaven as they were just oh-so-comfy - it wasn’t so much a car as a giant sofa with wheels and an engine, the Americans really knew how to make proper car seats back then! Since then, the only car I’ve sat in that has even come close to how comfortable the seats in the Jeep were was an Infiniti M saloon I sat in while me and my family were at the Driffield Motor Show in 2013. When we got home, I thought it was a much better car than his old Frontera, as it was more practical being a 5-door, and much more comfortable too. The ultimate test for our Jeep came in August 2010, when we went on a caravan holiday to Great Yarmouth in it. During the extremely long and tedious 150+ mile drive, it proved to be well up to the challenge of hauling our Swift Conqueror caravan to the campsite we were going to be staying at, thanks to the incredible pulling power of that V8 - even if it did make the car a TREMENDOUS gas hog and went through petrol like there was nowt tomorrow, but it did make a very nice noise which we called the “V8 roar”. It also proved to be a very comfortable car to travel in as it ate up the miles, mainly because of how unbelievably comfortable and plush the seats were. On the way there, I watched one of my Top Gear DVDs on the aftermarket DVD headrests that we’d had installed in it, while my sister watched one of her Hello Kitty DVDs. One day during our holiday, after we went to the nearby Tesco, while my mum was loading up the boot with shopping, my dad decided to “V8-roar” her by revving the engine as she packed the shopping away - she must have got a bit of a surprise when he did that! Unfortunately, our holiday was cut short due to heavy rain the following day, and even though we only had the Jeep for 2 months, I still consider it to be one of my favourite cars out of all the cars my family has ever owned.

I am sorry you felt this way about the video. Unfortunately I was unaware of the problem with the recording until I came to listen to it back by which time it was too late as I only had the car for one day. I thought long and hard about whether to bother uploading it at all, but I did eventually decide to do so and am glad that I did, as it is my second best performing video on the channel (despite the obvious problem with the sound for some of it.) I did put a disclaimer on the video about the sound and which bits were the worst for the sound. Hope you come back to watch some more as I no longer having the recording equipment I did on this video! 😀

With it being an automated manual gearbox it isn't as smooth as a normal auto box and the gear changes can be slower but it is perfectly suitable for a town car. I only had this car for a day unfortunately but I will see if I can source one to show you how it drives.

Nice work. I just did this on mine. It only took 30 minutes, the hardest part was removing the switch which took 10 minutes, it should really take 2 minutes once you get the hang of it. I started at right side of the switch and used a trim tool to wedge the right side out, you need to keep pulling on that right side and the switch will come out. 15 minutes of cleaning with brake cleaner and some que tips, reassembe, test, and reinstall. A new switch might only be $30 here, but thats $30 towards something else... Thanks for posting the video.
