Can a Beginner Install a Harley Cam?
I learned a lot installing the S&S 475 cam chest kit in my 2023 Harley Davidson Low Rider S a few months ago. During my research before I saw others wondering if they were skilled enough to tackle it, and I've since been asked as well. So I thought I'd do a bit of a debrief sharing my thoughts and feedback. Others may have their own thoughts and opinions as well so feel free to share your response with us all.
Thanks for watching. Cheers!

Hey friends I decided to pull the trigger and bought the S&S 475 cam chest kit for my 2023 Harley Davidson Low Rider S, along with a handful of specialty tools to tackle the install myself. Things went a little sideways at times but we made it in the end. It was a roller coaster of an experience but I’m glad I took it on and accomplished things. Happy to see Harley put a good cam bearing in.
I just recently bought the 2024 Street Bob, I have the same fairing and shield you have, and I'm 5'11 also, I think people are confused about wind buffeting, I get wind on my helmet, but it's not pushing my head around. and a lot of the noise you hear is actually your helmet, oh, I have the same helmet in carbon fiber.
@@michaelgriffith2379 well said, those are good distinctions to be familiar with.
Great video. Unfortunately things like that bolt incident happens a lot. I work in quality for a major manufacturer. There are process in line to catch that. Obviously the thread depth gauge wasn’t used on the machining side and the torque driver was over ridden on the assembly side. Most likely there are going to be several engines with that same bolt issue in the same location. It’ll be as many as they ran between checks on the machining side. The assembly side, people just cheat the checks to get parts out including management. Unfortunately this is the state of American manufacturing currently. Harley can easily see what engines are affected by running the serial # of the case. It’s all recorded.
@@jimbeam4111 very interesting. That’s what all those around me suspected. I appreciate you taking the time to share your expertise and insight.
What is your underlying purpose of installing a larger cam? Are you dissatisfied with the stock performance of the 117 cubic inch / 1900 cc motor? If you were to gain speed or gain torque .. so what? .. what's your goal? The amount you spent and time spent doesn't seem to justify the outcome especially as the bike is as new without problems. Each to their own I guess, filled your time in.
I personally wasn't after the torque or power increase as much, but I will say I enjoyed the throttle response more than I thought I would after the install. I think pretty much any Harley I've heard sounds way better with the cam done so I wanted that for aesthetic styling. To each their own too though as you said.
I literally just bought an S&S 475 cam install kit and I'm so glad for this video. So detailed, Ive never worked on a motorcycle only automobiles.
Very nice, you'll do great on the install I'm sure. Have fun with it!
You put yourself through so much grief for what? A bigger cam? Really? Stock performance on a 117ci not good enough? I enjoy working on bikes too but this seemed pointless. Especially when your bike is relatively new! Gave you something to do I guess.
So you think the thousands of people who upgrade cams on all the 117 M8 models is pointless?
Absolutely. You got it in one. Hit the nail on the head.
Great video 🙏
Thanks friend
Hi. Did you find the seat narrower on your thighs than the standard? Thanks
Maybe slightly, but if so it was very subtle and still an improvement. Subtle enough that I wouldn't say I noticed much though.
@ Thank you
Does anyone know if this will reset/delete my cruise control that I added with the V&H FP4 tuner?
why are you marking the torque sequence on the cam chest cover, what are the reson behind it ?
Hey man! I took my lowrider 2 on a 2000mile journey from bottom of Australia to north. (Adelaide to Darwin) Memphis shade, tbr pipes and highly recommended thrasher escape bags on back!
Hello, Are you interested in testing products?
Awesome video, loved how you took your time and enjoyed the process. I used to live in Gig Harbor WA and do not miss it it all. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just collected my 2021 lowrider S….traded a Pan America….how are you getting on the fairing now some time has passed? I’m the same height (5’11”)and wonder if I should go for a taller screen …
Congrats on your new ride. I really came to enjoy this screen size. Thankfully it's easy to swap though if you try one and end up wanting a different size.
Good job dude!
Where did you find the sissy bar. That looks great and is exactly what I am needing for my dyna
It's an Edward Richie sissy bar. I have an install video if you'd like more details. It's a great sissy bar.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm going to do the same job myself on my 2023 FLHXS. As far as specialty tools go, you might want to consider keeping them and maybe charge someone to do the same job on their scoot for a technical consulting fee. I recently put new apes on my 2023 FLHXS and found out that you have to take your bike to Harley to bleed the new ABS brake system because there's a "specialty tool" and a laptop needed to bleed the ABS module. That tool is $750 and Harley charges $200 just to bleed the front brakes side. I will purchase this tool for future use, based on mileage and if any moisture gets in as needed. Then I will volunteer my services to anyone that needs a brake bleed at a minimal cost. I wrench all my own bikes and have a motorcycle table lift because I love working on my motorcycles myself.
Nice! Sounds like a fun job and that you have a great setup for working.
Dude fantastic video
Thank you sir!
Bearing tool was $400? Which one did you buy? Fuel Moto has their bearing tool for $140
I misspoke, it was $360. www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/jims-camshaft-needle-bearing-remover-and-installer-for-harley-milwaukee-eight?Product&RevZilla&sku_id=1292965

Thanks very much, cheers!
Does the ring in the back of the pump need to be there
If your pump has the cut out for it yes.
I had a heck available time getting that pump to seat in the lower left corner. Now my plate dont seem to fit. I have to remove all the pushrods and lifters just to get the plate on.
Dang that's a pain, sorry it gave you grief.
You could use a nickel for the gap if you don't have a ruler or measuring tape.
Good idea!
It appears there's been some interest in purchasing the specialty tools mentioned in the video. I'm open to selling them on a first come, first serve basis. For serious inquiries feel free to email me warrenmarshallphotography@gmail.com
You should rent the tools out, I will definitely be in line to rent them. It's ridiculous to spend 600 for a one time use and I really would love to install my own cam.
Not a bad idea!
Great video, looking to install the same cam in mine. Interested in grabbing those speciality tools from you.
Live and learn good to see you doing this on your own! 😊
Thanks!
how secure is the bags behind there? it looks like it can fall off if its heavy
I kind of had the same thought initially, but it's been great. I clip one of the buckles through one of the lower cross sections of the sissy bar, along with the main straps, so I think it'd be essentially impossible for it to come off unless 4 separate straps somehow simultaneously broke.
@ thanks for the feedback.. I’ve been considering and contemplating to splurge on the low rider 117. I’m still torn between the st and s.. they raised the price twice in a year for my country and the hike is 5 figures significant.
I took my 96ci to a 107ci. Rocket 🚀 cams with easy start (thanks s&s for r&d) not exactly a beginner, but after replacing clutch and compensator i felt like any job was unlocked. GIVE YOURSELF TIME is no doubt the best advise I've heard in a while. (Got my big bore and camshaft job done in a day with preparation). Love it! Ride on rider!
That's awesome! Great job on your successful work. I've watched some clutch videos and it looks fun.
Great video man. Make more lol
Hey thanks man! Been loving your Indian vs. Harley videos lately as well too!
Everyone is going to want to buy your specialty tools. I will buy them if you haven’t already sold them. And, I’ll even sell them back to you in the future if you need to work on another bike again.
Yes, i did. Just be careful with the oil pump o rings. Apparently i pinched and cut mine
Ah dang. Was that a pain in the ass the pull and replace?
@Warren-Rides i didnt end up doing it. Moved cross country and had it retuned for lower altitude and while it was in i had the shop pull the cam back out and stuff to try and figure out why my breather bolts were leaking oil so much. That is a common sign of the oil pump not being seeled properly apparently. Had them fix it.
Excellent video! You touched on every one of the issues any DIYer should consider, regardless of the task or complexity. The only thing missing from the video...was the cam upgrade worth it? Including the cost of the specialty tools and the replacement parts, the upgrade would have cost well more than $1,000. Did you achieve the torque/hp gains you hoped for?
Ah good point, I guess I did fail to mention that particular point since I believe I covered it in the actual cam install video. I thought it was definitely worth it though. Lots of fun and sounds amazing.
Great video! Let’s get in touch. I’m interested in buying those items.
Solid considerations. I know this is absolutely not something I would do myself. 😂
Thanks Ryan. No shame in passing on a job like this!
I just ordered a RS468, I’m afraid to stripe that bolt or tapper cuff bolt when I install soon. Thank you for your video !
Nice! Best of luck with your build.
I was perfectly fine with the stock seat up until the 2000 mile mark. The foam felt completely flattened and I was able to feel the plastic seat pan underneath. I also was doing a lot of hard riding on rough roads in Baja
Oh nice! I bet Baja was epic. Not surprised it beat up your seat though I'm upgrading was great.
Bro this is a terrible video. Skipping everything doesn’t help at all. And you should show the hard time you went through installing. Waste of time
Thanks for watching!
Sorry if you already mentioned this but how many hours did it all take? Thinking of copying everything you did step by step.
@@Shah_creates good question. It’s hard to say for my personal experience just because I ran into a handful of miscellaneous interruptions or small issues (not including the broken bolt), and then filming everything always drags everything out. If you don’t encounter any issues though I’d say you could easily get it done in 8-10 hours or so. Some people may say less, some more, but that’d be my guess.
@@Warren-Rides Thank you. By the way, this is real, you have the nicest setup on your LRS. Love the short V&H matte black pipes and the fairing. Very tasteful and cool.
@@Shah_creates Thanks very much! Best of luck on your install.
Awesome sound & great videos !!

Great video: Been a mechanic & worked for a machine shop for 25 years. Always always use a breaker bar to crack the bolts free first before using any kind of impact tool. Thanks for sharing your build.
Ah gotcha, that's good advice. Thanks for watching.
Can you throw up a link to your parts list? Revzilla cart or something? Trying to do my cam soon and I’m thinking of going with the same cam.
Mostly everything cam in the kit I ordered: www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/ss-475-cam-chest-kit-for-harley-oil-cooled-milwaukee-eight-2017-2021?Product&RevZilla I think the only other things I needed were the specialty tools and the oil pump gasket.
So precious with your gloves and toothpicks lol. Good video though.
Haha lots of gloves when you're working with oil but constantly needing to touch expensive cameras
Broken screw
Getting a road warrior in 2 days and I looked up an installation video and this was the first one. I enjoyed it. Subbed immediately.
Hey thanks very much. Hope you enjoy the new fairing.
Why didn't they weld a nut on the end of the broken bolt? The heat of the weld helps free it. And why didn't they run a blind tap down the hole?
They tried both of those actually. I talk about that at 12:07 into this video if you want to hear the details.
I’ll go back and watch it again! I really felt for you when that bolt broke mate! Great result though. Great video!
@@brantwinter Hey thanks. It was a pain but definitely worth it in the end and all fun at the end of the day.
