Files and instructions can be found here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:2760999 I've seen a few people mount their drives in wooden structures mounted on turntables, enabling them to test things outside of the body so they have access to the internals and they can start refining the design while the ball is printing. I was at this stage in my latest build where I would need to do the same. The down...

Testing BB-8's stabilization using the updated design
Переглядів 1,5 тис.8 років тому
BB-8's internals were updated to support a lot more weight and every single part was redesigned and reprinted. Instead of 8mm shafts it now uses 1/2" aluminum box section. The main drive motor now also directly connects to the body and the neck mechanism is completely new. The motor that tilts the body has also been changed for a MUCH stronger unit. In this video the side-to-side stabilization ...

BB-8 neck testing
Переглядів 1 тис.8 років тому
The neck tilt and rotation mechanisms were wired up today. The head tilting is just a simple motor paired with a simple potentiometer. The two work together with a PID to set angle. This is exactly how a servo works, just on a larger scale. The neck rotation is a single motor with a rotary encoder connected to its input shafts, this is exactly how the tile motor is wired and lets me drive it to...

Finally getting the PID values tuned to reduce wobble in the full-sized BB-8. Tested on both a towel (stand in for thin carpet) and the much harder to reduce wobble on wooden floor. Tuning will continue as parts are added but it's defiantly a step in the right direction.
BB8 - Testing out the tilt motor
Переглядів 1,2 тис.8 років тому
In this video you can see one of the two small motors (one each side) that will operate the main tilt mechanism used to both stabilize and turn BB8. I'm happy with the speed and accuracy of the setup, confident it will be able to deal with the weight of the battery and lead in the bottom.
BB-8 - testing drive PID
Переглядів 9988 років тому
The drive for BB-8 is controlled by a simple PID loop on the Arduino to drive it to and hold a set angle. In the first clip the Arduino is alternating the setpoint from -45° to 45°. In the second clip it tries to hold 0° while I twist it around This is the PID loop that manages the drive motor, right now i'm just telling it to go to an angle as quickly as possible. A separate PID loop will gene...

So, I'm a little confused. Are you saying that it is a "linear" pot because it is a slide pot? Linear does not refer to the form factor, please look up "logarithmic vs linear pots".

Hi Critters! Hopefully you see this. The Orlando Science Center had a Line Wobbler installation that had the hardware go out. With no code available, there was no way to repair it. I'm happy to say that it is now a TWANG Installation! It's an an art gallery area, so every exhibit has attribution. I wanted to give credit where it's due, so if you would like, tell me how you'd like to be credited. I'll make sure it gets put up as such! I'd be happy to have them put Critters or your real name if you so desire. And let me know how you'd like twang stylized, all caps or what have you. I had some fun implementation details, the joystick is on the other side of a hallway that is an art gallery from the LED strip, so I ported TWANG to an ESP32 and used one ESP32 to drive the LED strip and one to send the IMU info and reset button press across to the other with ESP-NOW (Which works awesomely, this is the first project I've used it on.) I'll send a video once they put the plaque up with attribution, if you so desire. By the way, the FastLED library installed straight from the library manager in Arduino works just fine now. I saw in your readme it said TWANG needs a special FastLED, but looks like they fixed whatever was causing that necessity.

Now if you could incorporate this it would be complicated but incorporated to a computer generated voice based on text like windows has where you could plug it in type in a bunch of strings that you wanted to say based on whatever criteria you have and it would speak the text that would be handy that is way beyond my capabilities at this point I've just started a few weeks now I got a couple of neat projects that I did but nothing to that extent I think it would be a great challenge

I see that this project is quite old but I thought I would give it a try. I managed to gather all the components but when I try to compile the code in the Arduino IDE, I get a pretty long list of errors. I managed to find and install all the libraries but the list of compile problems remains quite long. I'm wondering if the version of the libraries or the version of the IDE are creating problems for me. Could you please tell me what versions were used when the project was originally developed?

@@Critters my room's not large enough unfortunately, but that's a really cool idea... I might even use the touch detection that many of these have to "lock" the lights and prevent people from changing them, just by holding one for a while without moving it, or to adjust a different light by double tapping it first and then dragging. These have so many possibilities, I feel like they deserve more attention, they seem to be really easy to integrate too
