Freight Rambler
Приєднався 28 бер 2017
A ramble around the railways of south east England, mainly from the cab of a class 66 or if you’re lucky a class 59 ! Engines driven, my basic traction was the Class 60, also drove Class 37, Class 47, Class 58, Class 08/09, Class 66, Class 59, also dabbled with Class 67, my first depot was Old Oak Common in West London, where I started in January 1993 as a Trainman D, i moved to Acton Depot in 1994, and passed out as a Relief Driver in January 1996, becoming a “full” driver in 1997, i left Acton in December 1999, moving to Hoo Junction Depot in North Kent, and was transferred to Hither Green Depot in 2017.
A trip from Brentford to High Wycombe on the 18th June 1999 on 60062( poor quality )
Today’s upload is a trip back in time, all the way to the 18th June 1999, I came across this among some old videos, the video starts on the Down Relief as I stop at a red signal to await clearance into Southall Yard, the engine has travelled light from Acton Depot & is 60062. Once the signal has cleared I cross over the Up & Down Mains ( whilst commenting on the Southall Railway accident which occurred in September 1997 ) the next segment of film shows my engine attached to the train at the West London Waste Transfer Station, which i have reached via the Brentford Branch, followed by a brief cab view. The train i am hauling is a waste train ( household waste ) which is going to landfill at Calvert in Buckinghamshire. The next segment of video shows part of my route to Calvert, starting with Denham Railway Station, followed by Denham Golf Club Railway Station, then Gerard’s Cross Railway Station, followed by Seer Green Railway Station then Beconsfield, we then pass through Whitehouse Tunnel ( 325 yards in length ) followed by High Wycombe Railway Station after which the video ends, this part of the journey is mainly on a up gradient, this time of year ( mid summer ) was an enjoyable time to do this run out, probably the job i miss doing most after my departure from Acton Depot ( 1994-1999 )

Well it’s a very early start for the Rambler this morning, one of the bad points of the job is the early starts, one never gets used to getting out of bed in the early hours. Back to today’s trip where we start on the Up Ludgate with London Concrete on our left, we then pass over Stewart’s Lane Depot. Then It’s over Factory Junction, we are now on the Down Atlantic, we then pass through Wandswo...

A short video from Faversham Junction to Whitstable Railway Station, Whitstable is now a trendy town for Londoners to visit on the North Kent coast, i would recommend it on a sunny summer day, but best to take the train, as parking can be a nightmare, it's about seven miles from Faversham to Whitstable.

Wonderful Video, wished you could have said each Station as you passed it. In the beginning I thought you were passing Train Care at Selhurst but cannot be!
What stations did you pass through from Brentford to Denham. I'm curious about the route taken?
I used to watch trains for hours on that footbridge at Southall Yard as a kid growing up with my Dad. I believe it has now been demolished. Seeing it has brought back great memories, and made me thankful to be a railway worker! Thank you FR!
Raynes Park, those Catch Points on top of an embankment. What could possibly go wrong?
Excellent video thank you ... surprised some Health and Safety boffin hasn't commented on thats not safe practice ...🙄
Got to know the gradient profile like the back of your hand, nice skills.
You're a freight man........remember -stay out of the sun, it burns !!!! Oh wait, DB takes care of that for ya ! From what I can gather from a mate left behind when I finished, it seems the rostering is way worse than it ever was . Pretty much 'white sheet' rosters, and all the 8 or 9 RFs in a block have been replaced by scattered odd days. Shades of my time at Northern Spirit/ TPE. Don't miss the endless 00.01, 00.55 , 01.13 , 02.13 starts. You'd have a week on 01.xx Wahwood, then the following week, from 04.00 ST , find yerself back on Washwood for the week .Then 07--00.. St find yourself back on 04.xx Monday , and ......surprise ! Washwood rest of week ! Oh wot fun we had . Daylight? Never heard of it, boss. Unfathomably, I still miss the bloody job. Sad ain't I ?,
If you're allowed to film in cabs, worth using a insta360 x4 camera that can film 180 or 360 degrees! Also allows the viewer to choose what they look at during playback. Camera has a built in gyroscope to keep the horizon level.
I love the headcam videos, started following you a while ago and glad to see you have returned. I have no problem with the headcam, it's what makes your channel unique and in my opinion way better than the others, this is a real deal, the true view of the driver!
Not good. Far too much movement. making me feel ill.
train sim world 5 graphics have come a long way . lol great vid drive safe
Love it. I wish that was me driving that locomotive. I suppose (rightly) that it's a class 66.
Ooo my old man would be pleased to see Herne Hill box still standing and the little sidings sub box at end of platform. He was on plat 1-6 panel at London Bridge and he conceded that was far busier than Herne Hill, Loughborough Junc was also a very busy signal box. It was his passing out on L Junc, Blackfriars and was working at London Bridge he got tasked to join the development team as a signalling consultant to reopening Snow Hill tunnel and it was his job mainly to force windows open in the already busy down dive towards Borough Market Junc but also to force windows into traffic running out of Loughborough, he was given quite a hefty bonus by BR for working some serious black arts to make it happen and it was bad when things went wrong as not only the SE division traffic stopped up and down the lines, the Thameslinks would also back up quite a ways...
Man you need to stop shaking yer head about so much. It's making me travel sick!
My old man worked Beckenham Junc and Shortlands relief signalman meaning he had passed out from Chislehurst up to Balham, Battersea Park station, Balham which survived til quite recent years and the alternative route from Beckenham Junction. Its rather sad the whole plan for signalling, a floor in Euston House turned over to managing the whole railway by half waged clerks, my father who retired from London Bridge box and his mate who ended up at Victoria power box were all smug about ending up with a cushy number and now once the move from regional centres moves on, very few actual signalling staff :( I remember Penge East when it still had green roundel's and a little siding with the tunnel inspection Wickham trolley which used to belong to Sole Street when the old man worked relief from Sole Street down to Strood and Rochester and up to Farningham Road. My uncle Ray was a 33 "jobber" at Hoo Junc and I had a couple pleasant summer holidays riding the secondmans cushions as we wended our way from places all over Sheppey and Kent, up to Olympia to pass off the Ford trains and into Willesden with the glass trains under pilot picked up at Olympia as SR men were not allowed on the MR metals without a pilot.
Not too sure about the head-cam, very ‘seasickness’ inducing ~
If only the camera would stay still...
I didn't mind it
This is drivers eye view, what do you expect? Better than the other boring videos with just a camera on the windscreen with no interior visible.
@@nstheboss Driver`s eye view is normally the line ahead but no criticism of your work was intended.
@reggiesmith3866 Drivers view is a lot more than just looking forwards out the window. Got gauges and side views you also need to be analysing
@@mattbicazette502 I`m sure you are right, my problem was with the wobbly camera rather than what it was looking at, I found it difficult to focus and watch for more that a v few minutes.
Either the track is very bumpy, or you have a very wobbly neck! 🙂
Are you supposed to have a camera on when your driving a train
Excellent trip with you. Thank you.
best view for me, good to get a feel of the cab etc.
I prefer window cam.
So do I; and the likes of emmo999 have provided such views (and with captions) -- but thone is useful in addition, as it gives glimpses left and right of places I had viewed previously. Each has its own value, and having both styles available is just about the best one could hope to have.
Boring. Go and watch them videos then, plenty of them.
The rocking motion made the loco look very unstable also the driver seemed to be looking out of the side most of the time not ahead??
It’s been a while since I drove a Class 47, but pretty sure that is NOT a Class 47. Doesn’t sound like a 47, no FV4 Westinghouse brake handle, no desk with reverser, power handle and various switches, and the side window was a drop window, not a slide open window. Also, AWS was an original horn or bell - not a bing or bong 🤷♂️ I’m not saying this loco did not start its life as a Class 47, but it is nothing like one in this video!
Class 59 video 47
@ ah - I stand corrected then, sorry. I didn’t see any reference to a Class 59, and I knew some of the 57’s underwent some hefty changes in the cab as well when converted from 47’s.
How on earth did you get a Class 47 from this? 🤡
@ The video title opened up with (Cab Ride 47) - with route covered. As with many other cab videos, the class of traction is normally inserted in the title somewhere - Cab Ride 47 in this instance. I could find no where that mentioned an alternative type of traction - hence my confusion. My mistake, I’ve owned it - bit like Jimmy Carr and his taxes 🤷♂️
What's the black box on the centre pillar for?

Any Idea what happened to the footage of the rest of the ride? Next cab ride after this is a different train. Was it the camera or did you just decide not to record the rest?
Merry Christmas to you.

What it must be like to have money. Merry Christmas FR
I love these videos as I go SailRail from Manchester Piccadilly (I’d prefer if it was direct and from Manchester Victoria) via Chester to Holyhead on the way home to visit my family in Rural Ireland - I’d love to see a high-speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Dublin, emerging onto the main Dublin Belfast line near Howth Junction and terminating at Dublin Connolly - the dedicated (new) line could start from Hull via York and Leeds to Manchester Victoria for direct and express trains
I wish I found this channel sooner. I thought something like this wasn't possible because of TOCs being strict with train drivers doing recordings but wow. It's just like that dutch guy's train driver POVs. Please keep uploading these!
You are correct this type of filming is not allowed any more, in the lead driving cab, this was filmed before the ban came in
Awesome 👌 love the camera angle!
Nice video , glad to see these again . What was the question to the signaller I missed it ?
@@robd2184 I phoned the signaller to check that the signal was off, at the rear of the train for the move into Hoo Junction Up Yard, because of the length of the train it was beyond my vision, not helped by it being a ground position signal GPS set about a foot off the ground, showing two white lights when off, often referred by drivers as a dummy ( as in baby signal ) much easier to see at night.
@ , ah, I thought that’s what it was….does the shunter not confirm that via radio ?
@@robd2184 the shunter confirms the route into & through the yard is set correctly, he was not in a position to see the signal at this point in time
Always enjoyed your videos so its fantastic to see you uploading again

been a long time since you filmed that. The shed opposite the junction I've had to make some supports as it blew over last winter. got to make some minor repairs from the recent winds. Good to hear JDs voice on the two way radio though! Hoo ops supervisor
That shed thing was never secure or up to the job, as usual the cheap option !
But what a palaver. At Marchwood in 1975 the 47 had the signal and ran straight onto the branch (a branch off a branch).
Not another class 66!!!
Sorry 😂
I hear an EMD, is this a 66?
@@SteamCrane yes it is
I think I would find it a little unnerving shunting off the mainline with a live third rail below. Excellent video though.
You learn to respect the third rail, at all times
@ I guess so. I remember a documentary once about the underground. All new staff, even office staff, are required to have a day on the tracks and step over the live rail while it is live. I think I would certainly respect it then!
Still no footbridge at Shornemead crossing!
This was pre footbridge
Welcome Back!! You have been deeply missed! I think I’ve worn out your back catalog of videos
@@johnboughton7451 😂
Was that AWS clearance pings? Had no idea that was in the Hundred of Hoo Line, makes sense but still, I wasn't even sure if the Medway Valley line had it Also wouldn't it be logical to have a reserve/bypass line rather than occupying the NK Up line? I've been on a passenger train before that was stuck behind one of these movements and I'm surprised there isn't a third track or something that goes off to the left and feeds directly into HooJ Up, or the junction at the Up. Seems easy to do as well it's only foliage there on the left.
It’s all a question of money & who pays for it, so it won’t happen
No fireman, no head brakeman...seems a little dangerous.
Where have you been hiding for the last 50 yrs, fully fitted air braked freight trains in the UK have been driver only since the 1980's with the only exception being certain class 7 - 45mph toxic tank or nuclear trains requiring a Guards Brake Van until the late 90's when even that rule was abolished due to more modern wagon designed to run at 60 mph being built & as the Brake Van's were unable to travel at that sort of speed they were declared unsuitable for further use & withdrawn from service.
@@davidnolan1692 2 mile long trains, with mid-train distributed power, are common in the US. Also, our right of ways are normally unfenced. Some commuter lines are single operator, and many deaths have resulted.
@jessekaplan143 You clearly know very little.
@@davidnolan1692 In the US, where we run 2+ mile long trains on remote, unfenced track at 60. Normal freight car weight is over 100 tons. We don't use cabooses any more, just 2 crew in the engine and a remote air sensor at the rear end. Some commuter lines run single operator, and this has killed many people.
No fireman, no brakeman = no problem
Great to have these videos back again mate, love seeing a drivers perspective in a shed and see the goings on in the cab 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
3:56 these locos seem like the same ones used by Iarnrod Éireann on our Irish railways, even though I hardly know anything about trains, even though my grandad used to work for the old CIE engineering works in Inchiore in Dublin back in the day - and he lived alongside the Dublin Connolly to Sligo line near a manually operated level crossing near Clonsilla station, so I got to know Mrs Byrne very well 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪😍
Having lived in the U.K. (Manchester) for a number of years now, I constantly compare these railways to those back home in my native Republic of Ireland, as not only do I go home on SailRail via Holyhead, I’m aware that the Irish government is investing in our railways with Iarnrod Éireann in the coming years, including extending one of the lines past my home village in Ireland and opening up the freight line from Mullingar (Dublin Connolly to Sligo line) to Athlone (Dublin Hueston to Galway, Ballina and Westport line) for passenger use - I very much doubt this will include the (constantly shelved) high speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Dublin though
🤩😁😍🚂
A superb perspective from the number 1 cab of 67021. I like it.
Cheers !
