Sonic Testing on a Budget? Easier Than You Thought… #science
Sonic Testing on a Budget? Easier Than You Thought… What is it and why it's important? Time for a product review!
Ever wonder how thick your engine cylinder walls are? How thick are the port on your cylinder heads? What is too thin? How much can you bore or port? All relevant questions, right? In the past, if you wanted those answers, you would have to go to a machine shop that offered that service, and it would have probably costed you some good money. Not only that, but the procedure was also most likely pretty technical, and you probably had to be trained to operate the ultrasonic testing machine. That has all changed, you can actually do it yourself, it is simple, and budget friendly! In this video, I show you a sonic tester I purchased from Erickhill, explain how it is used, and also demonstrate the ease of use. If you are an engine builder, head porter, or someone who wants to measure everything automotive for thickness, this is a must have product.

You guys really need to stop using the phrase "on a budget". Everyone is "on a budget" of some sort. Some have bigger budgets than others so "on a budget" means nothing. Say what you mean. CHEAP!
Compared to machine shop prices or other devices that do this, this is on a budget. While I respect your opinion, i disagree with it. I meant exactly what I said.
@2hacksgarage I think what he’s saying is that even those places have budgets. They might be very high but I guarantee you no shop has unlimited funds just by the very nature of currency. I’ll exclude the Federal Reserve from the conversation. 😅 Is that person being pedantic and sanctimonious? Possibly. Are they ESL and don’t understand it’s a common American idiom? Also possible. Either way, you meant what you said.
Federal reserve 🤣🤣🤣 Budget is subjective, yes.

This might be good for porting cylinder heads as well.
You got that right!
Some tips to get the most accurate results: The velocity you input is the most important aspect for these measurements. It's always best to have the exact material velocity to obtain the most accurate result. You can use a section of the part (in this case the block) to setup your instrument. Find an area on the part where you can us a caliper or some other calibrated measurement device to obtain the thickness and setup your instrument accordingly. A little complicated to explain in this forum. This is a dual element transducer (called a pitch/catch probe) therefore the line that separates the two elements should be in the axial direction on the cylinder. The variation in the readings you're seeing is caused by the probe rocking on the surface which will have an effect on the accuracy of the reading.
Great info, I will definitely make a note of that!
Not enough tool usage in the video . I do love the tool though, thanks for the video.
I’ve got more videos coming that will put it through its paces!
I could have added that to my Christmas list !!! Maybe a wish list for my birthday in April. Thanks for the info. !!1
Oh man, it’s definitely a cool tool!
gone down to 3mm .120 on big blocks making 700 hp
Did it last long?
👍🏼
Thanks Nick!!!
Very handy for porting the head's you could see the water Jackets, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones,
agreed 10000%! Thanks Donald! This tool will definitely come in handy. Best to you and your loved ones too!
according to eric weingarten the probe is too big for the holes , ive done it with my probe but ive got a fischerscope that not only measures material thickness but plating thickness on main bearings and rod bearings my probe is about as big as a stubby pencil
When you let off gas I fell off the sofa
@@mdm6098 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s nice to know thickness, especially if you plan on any significant oversizing
you got that right my friend!
It's interesting, some of the things that crossover from the medical field to the mechanical side and vice versa. The ultrasound, the stethoscope, the engine hoist. I am sure that there are others.
It’s pretty fascinating, isn’t it?

Interesting video bro. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year. Keep the content coming. Hope you have an incredible day. Much love and RESPECT
Appreciate that! Happy New Year to you as well!!! Hope all is well!
Something to look at for core shift before you even get started on your block, is the cam bore. If you look at the casting to cam bore on the front of the block. The bore should be in the center, if not it has core shift.
good point! I should have done this prior to machining, but never too late to check it
Fancy, I read a magazine article about these things a long time ago. I guess some things are kinda adorable now.
Very Adorable 🥰 🍟
Yeah, it’s crazy how some stuff from the past is now affordable, definitely will come in handy!

Dart Sport!
Surface Detection methods. 242 thou average wall thickness on heads, 180 thou before boring on blocks. Lucky your not working a Thinwall 9.2" deck Cleveland..187 on heads, 90 to 130 thou on the cylinder bores. Great to see you doing the spot measurements.
that is pretty thin!! In your opinion, on cylinder walls, what is too thin?
Chevy Off Road and Marine in Australia said any engine with less than 180 thou at the thrust face is getting too thin for an 11:1 compression engine. From Factory, 351C 4Vs and Boss 351s were at 130 thou from birth at 11.2:1. I've seen one guy's 2.3 Turbo Lima Mercury Capri get down to less than 157 thou at the thrust face after a 40 thou overbore and survive 750 hp and 20 pounds worth of boost at 7.5:1 compression.
@ so probably comes down to the integrity of the iron being used. Well, and or luck!
Those are great videos 👍👍👍
Thanks Tim! What a blast that was!
A guy sure dose have a soft spot for a Pontiac!
oh man, they are great engines!!!!!
