REBEL MOON: A Writer's Deep Dive into Pacing, Stakes, Character and World Building
A WRITER'S DEEP DIVE INTO WHY REBEL MOON DIDN'T WORK ♡
I ended up watching Rebel Moon because I love Space Operas, but a movie that seemingly had it all had actually nothing to give. Instead, I walked away feeling confused... thanks to hollow characters and scattered pacing, Rebel Moon has a 22% critics review on Rotten Tomatoes. As a self-proclaimed "bad movie lover" this one was even too bad for me. Hope you enjoy this deep dive!!

    Hi! You're video on outlining (and especially the table you provided to everyone) really really helped me with figuring out my plot. Now I thought I was at a point where I was happy with it. But I'm struggling with something and I would be so grateful for a few community opinions on it. I have been planning (and starting to write) this fantasy novel for a while now, until I realized that it didn't really have a plot, it didn't have enough conflict. I did some research on plotting and found your channel, which has helped immensely. As I said, I now have a plot I was pretty happy with. But then I started thinking about whether it was morally okay to write a story like this. Let me give you some context: my story is about two slaves in a fantasy world. They fall in love, something horrific happens and they find out a secret. Both of these things leave them so shocked that they escape. Now the problem: my main character, Silas, has been a slave with the same Master (the king of the land) for a very long time. He was a young child when he was brought into the palace and has lived there ever since. He has since formed a very strong trauma-bond with his Master. He kind of sees him as a father figure. Throughout the story he struggles with his loyalties and his relationship with the other slave character and wants to find out the truth. Do you think it is okay to write about a character who romanticizes slavery in his head, in order to survive? Because of the strong trauma-bond he has formed throughout his life? Do you think it provides enough context if the other slave character acts as a polar opposite to him and through her eyes we get the perspective how horrible this all is and that Silas is not thinking clearly because of his trauma? Originally I was gonna add more drama by having them join the resistance against slavery and then have him betray the resistance and try to warn his Master (he still has some loyalty towards him). And I was also gonna have an ending where the characters eventually realize that slavery needs to exist in some form in this world (it makes sense in the context of the world and the magic system, but I don't want to give every single detail). I have since come to the conclusion that this ending (and possibly the whole story) probably sends a horribly wrong message and that I need to be much more careful writing about this topic. I really hope I haven't offended anyone by this, it really isn't my goal at all. I really care about these characters and this story and want to find a way to write it without being offensive and essentially horrible. Please help :/ P.S.: Thank you for reading through all of this if you did. I'm sorry it turned out so long!

    I've learned the best way for me to write my first/starting draft is to just bullet point everything with dialogue and basic action tags and locations. Something between a zéro draft and the worlds most intense outline, but it helps so much when revising. Though I still call it à first draft I've learned I can plot the story out as much as I want, but the character arcs can only be figured out by doing. You can't control those gremlins...

    As someone who’s building on my own sci-fi world, I find Rebel Moon really insulting to any competent writer’s intelligence. Having watched the director’s cut, I can confirm it’s not much better. In fact, most of the scenes cut should’ve stayed, since they wouldn’t have hurt the PG-13 Rating. It almost feels like scenes were cut and rearranged out of order to make the film worse.

    If it's terrible then you can go in and alter and change what needs to be done but you won't know until you try. I'm a perfectionist too and I find starting the whole process is probably the most daunting.

    Pacific Rim is pretty beloved by kaiju fans and i think it did fine critically as well. I loved TF 2007 but i did experience diminishing returns on the series. Bumble Bee was excellent though. Zach is a good adapter but imo terrible, terrible writer. Sucker punch is one of the most tonally bizarre movies ive ever watched. Id have turned it off if not for my Emily browning crush 😂that said i enjoyed 300, dawn of the dead(that had the great james gunn as the writer) and watchmen. I also think his objectivist / libertarian worldview lends to very inhuman feeling stories. Like super heroes not particularly interested in saving people. We'll see if he can hit a new low score with his Fountainhead adaptation.

    I really liked the video, first time i see someone actually showing the process! also, as someone who never liked happy endings, there's a story where i absolutely loved the ending and would have never liked it otherwise since it wouldn't have made any sense for everything that has been happening, (and the story had more tragedy than anything i have experienced tbh) and from that moment my opinion on what the ending should be changed, an ending should always focus on the messages the story is conveying and that what the story did, i will admit he ending wasn't really happy for some character, rather very heart-wernching, but the main characters had themes to convey and it was done masterfully, by the end i didn't even think about the vibe of the ending, but the storytelling itself, and this is what many forget about, storytelling doesn't care whether the ending should be tragic or happy, it should just make sense of the themes and messages that been building up in the story.

    Just curious, is the analysis taking into account the PG-13 cuts or the recently released director cuts? Wondering due to the timing and also some positive reviews emerging in favour of the extended Rebel Moon versions released this week on Netflix. A sequel to this video could be interesting to compare and contrast is there's any substantial differences in both versions' approaches to storytelling.

    • @janellelives5158
      @janellelives5158 5 днів тому

      I despised the PG 13 cut of Part 1. Currently I am watching the R version of Part 1 and it’s a lot better. Too many necessary scenes were cut out in the original release. The plot and motivations were quite nonsensical. I didn’t watch the PG 13 version of Part 2 because of it. Now I don’t think it should take 3+ hours make a decent film. I think for the Rebel Moon series Part 1 could have been a prequel and Part 2 the farmers war against the Empire. I imagine that could have cut the run time down while still telling the same story.

    • @a7000zo
      @a7000zo 4 дні тому

      @@janellelives5158 Halfway through Part 1 and I already agree. The story runs a lot smoother, the worldbuilding is much less expository, the mystery surrounding certain characters is better set up, and the over the top extremity of it all makes everything feel much more atmospheric and unique, even if the overall premise is still as familiar as before. There's still some writing and pacing faults, but I'm already much more into this new universe.

      That’s rude, viewing a movie doesn’t necessarily mean that it was liked, at least that’s what the 22% on rotten tomatoes highlights. Solid points, Mik! While you were reading the summary, I thought, "cool concept" but the execution wasn't so cool.
