Can You Trust the Taxis in Istanbul? Vlog 70
🚖✨ Hey fellow travelers! So, we just had an epic trip to Istanbul and wanted to share some tips about getting around the city.
We just got back from Gallipoli and next morning up and out into town - needing to "taxi" around.
Istanbul's taxi scene is a bit of a maze, but don’t worry-we’ve got you covered!
First off, there are yellow taxis, which are the most common. They’re usually reliable but make sure the meter is running. Some drivers might try to negotiate a flat rate, especially if you’re going to a popular spot like Sultanahmet-just insist on the meter.
We recommend that you look up uber to check what the rate should be - Uber does work in Istanbul "sometimes", and then use that as a guide when you negotiate with taxis for a flat rate.
Then, there are ‘Special’ taxis, which can be a bit more upscale. They’re great for a more comfortable ride but come with a higher price tag. Lastly, watch out for the unofficial taxis-avoid these at all costs. They’re not regulated and can be risky.
One last tip: always check your route on a map or app so you’re not taken on a detour. Istanbul’s traffic can be a challenge, so plan ahead and keep your phone handy. Safe travels and enjoy the magic of Istanbul! 🌟🕌 #TravelTips #IstanbulTaxi #CoupleTravelVlog

We have lived in Portugal for two years. Yes, Local groceries tend to be cheaper than others countries. Imported goods are far more expensive or just do not exist unless you live in areas where there are a lot of foreign immigrants. There are unfortunate reasons why groceries are cheaper. Salaries are very low, the Portuguese tend to have a local traditional diet and most cannot afford foreign foods - it is a sad history, after centuries of economic strife, low birth rate, authoritarian governments, young people leaving, to find better opportunities and history of complete mismanagement. This leads to a diet which is not particularly varied, not flavoursome or particularly interesting to foreign immigrants. If you live in a town with few foreign restaurants you'll find most menus are basically the same. Yes, it is healthy food, but tends to be bland flavours - no variety. Bland seems to be exactly what locals enjoy. I asked someone why, after the Portuguese travelled to the far corners of the world - trading spices, she said we do not cook with spices, we are traders.

That is a really interesting observation because we noticed the same thing as far as taste goes. Not only did we feel like we had to salt everything heavily, we couldn't actually find salt in most restaurants and if we did we would grab extra packets to take with us to the next place should we need it.
