1968AlaskanSourdough
United States
Приєднався 28 тра 2022
Moved to Alaska in 1968. A sourdough refers to a person who has been around for quite a bit and endured the hardships.
i.e. 10 years or more. (Term came from the old gold miners and trappers) A cheechako was typically somebody new who hasn't proven themselves, or weren't ready for the hardships and usually quit or left. (7 years or less)
Both of these terms were used back in the day of early settlers or trappers in Alaska.

10 Day Starlink Review
I find Starlink better than cellular and can rival a landline for speeds at times. It does come with some challenges. Even though you hear about trees or obstructions in other videos, I found this to be my biggest challenge in placing the dishy. This upload for this video, looks like it will take about 2 1/2 hours. 4K and 6.34 GB in size.

Buy the Dip
Переглядів 1614 годин тому
Stocks go up, Stocks go down. Be prepared to get rid of your losers, and buy quality stocks on a market dip. You need to know what you want, before the sale! We are late getting this out. Drivers for OBS and my Cannon camera had issues. We had to reinstall OBS, Cam LInk, and editing software. Always something.
Cellular Game Cam - Broke?
Переглядів 1621 годину тому
We enjoy the cool morning and talk about one of my tools that may seem underrated. Cellular game cam stopped working! After hours of searching we find the solution. The issue is that when it started it couldn't find the network. At first we thought it was a bad ATT SIMM card, but it wasn't!

We got Starlink

We have been using an AT&T mifi. I qualify for the First Responder Net program and it worked great.....at first. Cellular in spring and summer is always an issue, due to trees and leaves causing signal reflections.
August 2024 Market Sell Off
Переглядів 1721 день тому
Charting the S&P, we saw that a sell off was probably going to happen. Last week we called out the overbought condition. Most of us didn't expect such a fast sell off. We have lost a lot of gains, but this healthy for the markets. We talk about P/E and how that relates to different sectors of stock companies.
2A Promise - 1st 100 days!
Переглядів 1221 день тому
Well promises are being made, on the campaign trail. This one is impacting the 2nd amendment. We try to step back and not speak bad about one candidate or another, but instead analyse the promise, the action, and then the reaction. Do you think the action and reaction will be the same? We try to shed some light on the subject, along with some humor. (Even if its dry humor)

Golden Cross & Stop Order pay off
Переглядів 928 днів тому
Stocks go up and stocks go down. Even though this was a down week, we had certain stocks that did very well. One we talked about last week, with a golden cross forming. The other stock we took a larger position in; however, we did put in a stop loss. Both of these paid off handsomely for us.

We are finally tackling the bench build. We need the AC to suit up high near the window, and we need a place for some tools, like the miter saw, chain saw, etc. July 4 weekend is coming up, and we have been at the cabin for a little over a week. Summer is always a busy time for Alaskan's. Especially if your off grid. It's time to get new or good gas in to your place. Stock up on wood for upcoming winter. Then you have maintenance around your property, just like any other property. We are doing some maintenance this go around, but we have a few additions that we will be working on in the future. Trail is in a bad way. Overgrown and hole...

Thank you for an honest update/review!
Can't wait for "Alone's" review. I bet she has better connectivity.
A lot of tech for an oldschool guy like me. But it sounds like it's worth it.
Yeah....Guilty as charged. I didn't think it was techy at all! :-)
@@1968alaskan ignorance on my part is no fault on you. Appreciate the video!!
I plan on using Starlink along with cell using a neat cellular router I picked up that has some fun 'features'. I used Verizon (via a Visible+ SIM for $35/month) with that router at the cabin down on the Kenai last year for my IT job and it actually worked great, however I was only 1000ft from the cell tower so speeds were about as fast as you could get. Having two options for internet makes my boss less nervous.
So you are in IT ? What is your specialty? We are looking for a good IT person.
@@1968alaskan I'm the last man standing from a startup that was acquired a few years ago, so I wear a few different hats. But my main day to day involves maintaining several cybersecurity appliances in AWS and elsewhere as well as doing some security engineering for partners.

Nice honest review, thanks for sharing it☺
Thanks.
Batteries galore. Great video. Love all the moose. I used ti have one but man can they eat batteries.
I've been fairly lucky...I try to change the batteries every 6 months. With 4 game cameras those batteries count up quick. 4 cams X 12 batteries X 2 (twice a year) = 96!
Interesting content. 😊. Thanks for the info.
Glad you found it interesting, this topic isn't for many! :-)
I'm actually trying to learn more about this so I can keep an eye on things. Daryl does not have the time at the moment. Appreciate the info!
Learning is free....I can't stress this enough. Be confident in your investing.
Thanks, interesting times
That it is! Times like these next few months, make it very interesting.
"Alaska Mosquito Protection" lol perfect! Thanks for the reminder about the firmware. I grabbed my phone right away to check that haha!
I'm the type of guy, if its working don't touch it. Really blew it on this one. I need to go look at all my other critter cams..Always something to do. Thx for the comment.
@@1968alaskan Hopefully all is well with them, if not at least you know what to do now lol!
Truly the ultimate choice for internet
I am a believer, now that I have had it for a bit!
Did you use the starlink app to align the dish? Should possibly be getting higher speeds but obviously that is subjective
I did. I've found that the app shows the area as not supported. It is still workable for me. Weather (rain) makes a big difference. I have reached downloads as fast as 300 Mbps and as slow as .08 Mbps... Two locations, makes it subjective.
Awesome information! Thanks for sharing!
The only consideration in hind sight...is making sure you have a clear view to the north...and a little to the west and a little to the east. During setup they want if facing due North. At the cabin works great, here in town...Need to get it up above the roof line to clear other homes! Just an FYI.
@@1968alaskan thank you! We have great internet here at the house (Copper Valley Telecom) but are lacking when we roam around. There has been talks of geo-fencing with the home kit so I’m conflicted as to which one to purchase. Of course, I haven’t called them yet lol.
@@TheSimpleAlaskans Totally understand I"m the same way! Depending on how much you roam...and where! I have got by with a MiFi solution for years...but..... If you will be roaming for say 3 months....You can turn off Starlink for nine months and then easily re-start the service! Spendy but...I would say that would be the way I would go. 150 per month x 3 months = $450. 450 /12 months = $37.50 per month x 12 months (budget wise) That would be hard to beat. All how you want to attack it. Good luck.
Good advice☺
Thanks.
The correct speed test is on the Starlink app. Do you have Gen 3? You should have a minimum of 150 GB. Why are you not using the app for the speed test? You were impressed with the app finding the number to activate, yet you're using the non Starlink speed test.
I like multiple results, not the best results. But still very happy.
@@1968alaskan It's not about having the best result, it's the result from the app-device you're using. Which Starlink do you have? Gen 3 or something else?
@@1968alaskan I just found it odd you never used the Starlink speed test.
@@Sappho123 I did, just didn't show it in the video.
Put money into index funds and forget about them until you retire.
That is one strategy, but I will counter, probably not the best. I will explain in next video. Thanks for your honest opinion.
Great video! Hopefully it works as good for you as it does for us!
It will be fun testing this, North of latitude 62! Hopefully this will work, I feel confident. Still have to get that pressure washer, keep the good reviews coming! :-)
good luck👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
Is that the mini or full size? We have been thinking about getting Starlink as well.
It is the full size. The mini from my understanding has a data cap, something like 50 GB. With TV and my work, I'd blow thru that in a day. Take this next part with a grain of salt....I bought it at best buy. They offer a deal for $50 a year....that gives you a discount for items you buy. They claim over a 1000 items a day are on sale...seems high. But....They will also discount Starlink if the price goes down for the next 90 days. (west coast of USA is getting hardware for $299.00 currently) I bought batteries for game cam's... saved $14.00 on that alone. I know you probably won't be going to best buy that often....I assume.
@@1968alaskan I just ordered Starlink Gen 3 from Best Buy online for $299. It arrives Monday. I have horrible internet in rural Virginia with Brightspeed. Max. 15 GB! None of my security cameras record events. On the Starlink site, the Gen 3 is also available for $299 until Oct. 5th, so this sale is not related to Best Buy, but Starlink itself. I am looking for the Starlink Ridgeline Mount but it isn't on the website. I need an easy way to mount it. I pay for Total Tech Support at Best Buy so I'll have 60 days to try it. I'm sure it will be fantastic. Much better than having to mail it back to Starlink should it not work.
@@1968alaskan the mini has unlimited data for $150 a month, the 50gb plan is 50gb then $1 a gig after that, but the mini unlimited doesabout equal to the standard dish, and your on the standard and should be getting way better that 56mbps its wifi 6, im sure theres some tewweking can be done, but better that 56mbps
@@r.davidvaughan8887 Thanks for that Information!! I was under the wrong impression. They must have changed that also, as I thought the mini was a roaming only and only up to 50 gb. Thx for setting it straight.
@@1968alaskan what part of Alaska are you??? According to their site y'all get upto 120mbps up that way(perfectly fine streaming n gaming speeds for avg household), also the Gen 3 standards router has ether ports get ether cable(once you got everything mounted n set up) your speeds should increase
Crazy times
Yes indeed! But being aware of your surroundings and planning helps.
Love it❤❤❤❤ new sub here.
Thanks! Hopefully we have more cabin content soon. We have many irons in the fire, so it's not all cabin content. Glad to see you here.
We are under attack . Mass. just banned all semi autos . There is only one person to vote for right now. T/V swears to uphold the 2nd.

I typed on Rumble 1968 Alaskan Sourdough and not seeing you.. Maybe give til tomorrow for your site to get set up? I follow quite a few over there and like Rumble alot.
You are 100% right! Channel Name has no spaces! I was searching by Title of Channel. 1968Alaskan is the Channel.
I understand and support you. I just forget about rumble most of the time, to be honest.
I understand. It was a habit that I had to develop. When I opened UA-cam, I opened Rumble. Takes a bit. (one more click)
I have wanted to post more firearms related content, but have noticed that any video where I show using a firearm the video gets suppressed. I have viewers ask about my firearms all the time but have reluctantly decided not to discuss them in any future videos as UA-cam does pay my bills. I do not agree with their views and current policy but as of right now cannot afford to move platforms. I feel your frustration and agree that you need to do what is best for you. Wishing you all the best with whatever you choose. I support you in whatever you do.
Thanks for the comment! It is frustrating to me, as I don't rely on UA-cam for an income. It is more for documenting events for family and others. I have a few videos out there, in regards to guns and ammo and they still top my views every day. I know there is a huge demand on this subject. I have decided not to leave youtube as there are many channel's that we enjoy. The conclusion I have come to, is to show it on Rumble, and use UA-cam as a notifier. Probably will be a bit before I become active in that area, as my full time job is very demanding! Hopefully with in the year, we will be retired and have more time.
👍
Not an easy decision.
After a few days of thinking on this... Probably will just keep it as is for UA-cam, and move all the pew pew stuff over to the freedom loving sites.
@1968alaskan that seems sensible. Would hate to see you go. I'm just UA-cam so it would be a nice compromise.
I would like to give the middle finger to UA-cam, However, in an indirect way, I would be losing contact with many of you. You point that out well. I enjoy much of the offgrid videos, and youtube friends and the conversations. I'm not much on compromise, but in this case, I will.
@@1968alaskan I totally get it. We are being forced to do things all over the place, not just UA-cam. Pick your battles as they say. If everyone could see things the same way and stick together it would have a real impact. Unfortunately I don't see that happening. Seems we are small fish in a big pond.
Very True! Glad we don't all think the same, what a boring world it would be!
