I make collages as a hobby and I definitely agree that copying can be helpful, as well as looking at others' work to see what is possible. You can look at work you like and take an idea to explore based on their theme/topic, composition, and/or source material. Because you will probably never be working with the exact same combination of magazine clippings, papers, etc. that they are using as source material, your collage won't be a copy to any meaningful extent. For example, Leah/Flanzella, you made a collage using clippings that Rosie/east.of.honey sent you where you put an image of a house under construction in an underwater scene. I could take that as a springboard by assigning myself to create an underwater scene with a surreal, incongruous element. Another time, you made a collage about the passage of time and the different stages of life--marriage, family life, homeownership, etc. I could take that same theme and make a totally different collage because (sadly) I don't have a stash of vintage Life Magazines but rather have other magazines.
Exactly! I love these examples 😁 thank you for them!
You can always check out my collage kits if you're looking for some similar papers 😜
I love this series so much!! Thank you for sharing your expertise💕
You are so welcome!
Great info! Thanks much! Kathleen
You are so welcome!
Glad to see your channel.
Happy to have you here ❤️
lol bread as a paint brush, neat idea (but I would be worried the crumbs would get mouldy, but then that makes the piece def from a certain artist)
It definitely opened my mind to all the potential paint brushes our households have! I'd love to get back into painting one day 😁
Thanks! This gives me much to consider when collaging. Sometimes the original message that comes to mind changes as I work on a piece! Oh, and I also love old movies. (I mean REALLY old as in silent films of the 1920s, and up through more recent decades.) It really is the best way to escape and time travel, LOL. I'd love to hear you talk about your old favorites.
Mine too! I find when you have to work with what's in front of you, where you begin is not where you end up. I do the same thing with paintings as well actually.
Oh wow! I really like movies 1940-1970!
💖 Lots of good advice. Sometimes I get frustrated because, it seems, when I feel like I've stumbled on an inventive style on my own, I come across someone who's done it already and much much better! Makes me want to stop watching videos and such to avoid influences... not really! I enjoy seeing what talented people like you are doing. Anyway, I collage for fun not to sell.
And that's okay, right?!? To me that's the best as it inspires me to keep at that style again and again. If you did that style 100 more times, would you be ready to share it the same way that person did? I like to use that for motivation of how good I can be if I put the time into it. Thanks for the comment 😊
Wonderful and inspiring video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really informative video! I’d love to learn how you finalize your art pieces digitally. They look to have a slightly grainy effect that gives the piece an extra vintage vibe. Any chance we can get a video about that? Thanks and can’t wait for more vids!
For sure! It's on my list of to do's and definitely will be covered in my course that I'll be doing at some point.
I can't seem to be able to find my collage style 😕 I love everything depending on my mood... abstract collage, vintage, surrealist, black & white, silly/funny, dark/macabre. I'm all over the place, but I guess it's part of who I am. It's probably confusing for my followers, tho. 😅
If you break it down, do you see any similarities? This would be a great thing to workshop on the discord server if you can send like 10 of them and see if people can see any patterns 😌 this could be the theme, but maybe the theme is being all over 😂 not sure now long you have been doing it for either but for me I felt that way until I found the vintage magazines! They gave me the voice I wanted!
Hi, love this, thank you so much, the discord link says it has expired 😢
Oh, so weird! Here it is again, I'll update. I didn't know they expired.
