Color grading is an art that relies heavily on precision and perception. Our environment, including the colors and brightness of surrounding areas, can significantly impact how we perceive the image on screen. Ideally, a neutral gray wall and a high-quality reference monitor provide the perfect grading environment, but that isn’t always an option.
To address this challenge, I created this DCTL, a simple yet effective tool designed to enhance your workflow. This DCTL shrinks your image, adds a customizable border, and allows you to place your footage against a neutral or colored background.

Happy year 2025 and thank you a lot!
Such a clever idea! Thank you Stefan!
Middle Gray value in black to white ?
For Middle Gray, set the slider to 0.180.
@@StefanRingelschwandtner thank you
great work Stefan, thanks
I have 0 doubt that this will be added to everyone's node tree. Thank you .
Cupom codes for the DCTL Utility? 🙃
Ive bought some of this guys DCTL's, so worth it. I use them all the time
Great DCTL, thank you. Now I am wondering, I am setting up my new grading suite right now. Is it necessary to paint the walls middle gray if I am using this or can they stay white? I am also using a projector for client viewing. My understanding is that the walls should be gray also to avoid reflection? Thank you!
Definitely paint your walls a neutral gray. This helps eliminate any unwanted color reflections that could influence your perception of the image while grading. Additionally, make sure to set the lighting in your room to 6500K (D65) to ensure accurate color balance and consistency in your viewing environment.
Thank you so much for your work. You DCTL’s are really great
Thanks so much for sharing this for free. I was going to write a similar DCTL for the same purpose of matching colors. I wish Resolve‘s Color page would allow for custom backgrounds in the viewer.
Match Shots with your paid DTCL products .... am interested in that also if possible ....
You’re a wizard keep it up
Thanks
Unreal content you give away! Thank you Stefan!
Awesome! Thank you and a happy new year
Had no idea when I saw you announced it that it had this kind of intended use! Very clever. Thank you.
Thanks Stefan, your DCTL’s have saved me countless hours in developing looks & grading. This Boarder DCTL is another must have & the fact that it is free shows your willingness to help other out. Thanks once again 🙏🤘👍🤗
Amazing! Thank you!
Thanks a lot for our new year gift ! verry useful !! Happy New Year to U sir.
Štefan. You have changed my entire production with your dctl tools. You simply rock. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2025. Waiting for your DWG luts. Take care dear maestro.
Thank you!
Happy new year! Thank you
honestly one of the best tutorial ive ever watched, thanks for such an clean / simple method and yet so effective, really learn a lot from this
i just discovered mononodes film emulation just a doubt does film grain , halation work with davinci resolve free version or studio is mandatory ? im very interested in some products u got there
Halation (as a PowerGrade setup) works with the free version of DaVinci Resolve, but grain is only available in DaVinci Resolve Studio. I recommend taking a closer look at the "Film Elements" DCTL pack and the "Color Shift" DCTL pack, rather than the "Film Emulation" pack. However, please note that DCTLs require the Studio version. If you need more information, feel free to email me.
It would be nice also see that you're exceeding Rec709 color space when adjusting saturation
Please take a look at the entire pack! There's also a Clipping-DCTL pack included, which highlights when you reach 75% or 100% saturation of the Rec709 color space. Additionally, there's a free DEMO version available on my website, so you can test it yourself at no cost. Feel free to give it a try!
Oh man ... this is brilliant! can we download the bts stills and film stills to test oursef ?
Thank you for your kind words! Unfortunately, I can’t offer the BTS or film stills for download, as that would go beyond “fair use.” However, you can download the stills from my website to follow along with the course. I also credit IMDb as a frequent source and link to the original source on my website, so you can take a screenshot from IMDb and use those to follow along as well.
thanks Stefan, I'm a user of the course and its been very informative and one of the cleanest "no fat" approaches ive seen. Really hoping for some content on the course as well as LLP that is geared for a Davinci Intermediate workflow. I think a lot of people would hopefully find it useful as well! thanks!
Thanks so much for the kind words! I appreciate the suggestion for content geared toward a Davinci Intermediate workflow and LLP-I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future updates!
Why can't people from all countries buy the product especially because it is digital? I am from Serbia, i would like to buy a product but my country is not on the list. I mean there should be a country or options that filling the fields in not important in order to purchase the product.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. As a small business, I have to be very careful about which regions I can serve, since each one comes with its own complex tax and regulatory requirements. While I truly want to offer my software worldwide, Serbia’s requirements are currently too complicated for me to handle, and I’m sorry I can’t add it at this time. Your feedback really matters to me, and I’m always looking for ways to improve. With enough interest, I hope I’ll be able to include more countries in the future. Thanks again for reaching out and for your patience.
@@StefanRingelschwandtner Sorry to hear that about that. I really wanted to buy it but now I am unable to do so. Maybe in the future the option will be available. Thanks for your reply.
Yes!! This looks absolutely incredible. And cannot wait to take this course! Understanding these elements will certainly help me as a DoP!!
Das ist der Weg.
Seems very interesting and I'd love to watch it but $200 is just too much for a 2hr course IMO.
Thank you for the feedback! While it’s understandable to consider the length of a course when evaluating its price, it's worth noting that in fields like art and color grading, time isn’t always the best measure of value. These are pre-recorded and carefully edited videos where any pauses or unnecessary fluff are removed. I focus on going straight to the content and aim to keep the course as concise and content-packed as possible. My goal is to deliver maximum value in the shortest time, respecting both your time and investment.
@@StefanRingelschwandtner, I understand that, but I'd imagine that a lot of this stuff is already on UA-cam. And while I very much respect your work and completely trust your advice, I can't justify spending that much on a course compared to watching a tutorial by Darren or Cullen. But this wasn't made for me.
@@maxmeyer6395 I respect your viewpoint. The course is really about my own approach-using behind-the-scenes insights, personal research, and a structured node tree that reflects my thought process and color theory methods. It includes techniques and methods I haven’t seen covered on Cullen’s or Darren’s channel. It’s a different experience than what’s out there for free on UA-cam, but I know it won’t be for everyone. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out via email!
IMHO i dont think is that much for this type of knowledge, and the node tree he is actually criticizing is the one that darren uses, the thing for me is that is really fun to learn this things by yourself (experimenting and investigating), not only with yt tutorials but other web pages that are specialized in color, rn im finally doing dolby vision and boy it was a hell of a ride to get here.
I want to clarify that it was purely a coincidence that my node tree resembled Darren’s. My intention was to demonstrate a large node tree because, in my course, I focus on a minimal approach using only six nodes. I could have just as easily shown 30 nodes in serial; the goal was simply to highlight the difference between large and small node trees. That's all. I never intended to criticize anyone else's node tree!
I definitely recommend buying this course. It is worth every penny and it just condenses everything you need to know to professionally get great results, whilst also learning an insane amount about how to read scopes and how the Davinci tools work best together. Highly highly recommended. Get it!! @filmauracolour uses this method on all his grades and they are stunning❤
Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m really glad to hear you found the course helpful and that it’s been a good resource for improving your workflow. I truly appreciate your support and recommendation!
Thanks Stefan. From your favourite customer😊
It looks great. Sadly, too expensive for me at the moment. I just hope that I find this again in the future, when Im able to buy it, and when it make ssense to buy, since I'm starting in davinci, and have a lot of other things to learn. do you do mailing? I thought of this so I wont loose track of your course. (i subscribed to your channel, considering a worst case, but finding your channel in the middle of hundreds other that I'm singed up will be difficult 😅)
Its worth saving up for. Very very good course. @filmauracolour uses this method on their grades and they are lovely.
Thanks for your interest! I don’t currently have a mailing list, but you can always bookmark my website to stay up-to-date. I regularly post my latest uploads on the homepage. You can also follow me on UA-cam and Instagram, where I’m pretty active. That way, it’ll be easy to find my course again whenever you’re ready!
is the course using only resolve native tools?
Yes it does
Yes. All color adjustments are made exclusively with Resolve’s native tools-no plugins or external tools like DCTLs are used.
Excited ❤❤
THANKS STEFAN

Thank you! The Cyber Week discount ended on December 2nd, so it’s no longer available.
@@StefanRingelschwandtner omg i found out this video too late :( i wish UA-cam could pop this up on Cyber Week
@@StefanRingelschwandtner What was the Cyber Week discount was like?
@@maxie6990 Actually, you couldn’t have found the video two weeks ago because I just finished updating the course and uploaded this UA-cam video today. :)
@@user-nu8bf3bf9m The Cyber Week discount was 10%. I don’t do large discounts because I aim to keep the pricing fair for all users at all times.

this dctl is so good !! thank's
200$!! I guess that I'm not the target customer here. Back to the powergrades.
👏
I have been using this for awhile now and I love it. But i have recently run into an issue where when using the looks the footage breaks down and starts creating random severe artifactting, Wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing this. All the footage is flog 2 h.265 422 and never had a problem i think unitl the most recent davinci update. have uninstalled and reinstalled them as well still not fix, Lab and Print DCTlL still work fine.
To assist you better, it’s always helpful to send me an email. I’m here to help! If possible, please include some screenshots. Are you using an Apple M1 or M2 computer? In rare cases, there can be issues with these computers when combined with DCTLs. As mentioned, the best approach is to email me with more details.
DTCL's are a game changer to my workflow!
if we use flog or slog do we need to change the cst in cineon even we converted the clips in rec.709?
@@richardcahayon9852 if you are using Kodak 2383 lut you need a CST going from camera log space to Rec709/cineon film log.
Can u make filmic contrast dctl for free 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Thank you for this! is there anyways to create a really soft blurring to the edges so its not noticeable that there is a frosted box?
Thank you for your feedback! Unfortunately, I don’t currently have the bandwidth to update this .drfx file. It’s provided as-is for now. If you need something more customized, like a really soft, barely noticeable blur to the edges, you might need to dive into Fusion to achieve that level of refinement.
@ what can I use to soften it? A polygon? Or a bout node? Thank you for the reply!
@@khatagraphy Sorry, I’m not into Fusion much anymore. So I’m unable to assist. However, there are some excellent Fusion tutorials available on UA-cam that I highly recommend checking out!
Why are you comparing to 2k the whole time when title is 1080p? 2k vs 4k is a different debate
I chose to compare 4K to 1080p (2K for the thumbnail) throughout the video because '2K' in cinema typically refers to a horizontal resolution of 2048 pixels, and '4K' to resolutions around 4096 pixels. However, platforms like UA-cam (as well as Netflix, HBO, and other streaming services) refer to 4K as 3840 x 2160 pixels, which is technically not 'true' 4K but is commonly accepted as such. Similarly, 1080p is not 'true' 2K but is very close. I am very open about these distinctions in the video and even clarify this in the first 10 seconds with the word 'actually' displayed to show the exact resolutions being discussed. I think this makes it very clear for viewers what resolutions they are seeing in the video and helps keep the explanation practical for streaming contexts.
Thank you 👍
This is fantastic!
What color should darker skin tones be on the skin indicator?
In DaVinci Resolve's vectorscope, darker skin tones should still align along the skin tone line, indicating the correct hue. The same applies to my DCTL. You can find additional information on my website, including a free demo version and a new video on that topic.
