    Be warned, I was slightly traumatized by some scenes in The God of Small Things 😭But I do think it's a good book. I struggled a bit in the beginning because I'm also easily bored by historical fiction, but it picks up after a while, and then I really enjoyed it. I still think about it years after I've read it. And in terms of magical realism, I remember reading Beloved and not really understanding the magical aspects of it, so I read a bunch of academic articles on it, which made the interpretation so much clearer, and then I could really see Toni Morrison's genius. It sounds tedious, but academic literary analysis can be quite fun. But I think 100 Years of Solitude is a bit easier to understand, so it might not be necessary anyway.

    • @NnennaReads
      @NnennaReads 3 дні тому

      Oh no! Thank you for the warning, I did not even consider there could be some traumatic scenes in it, I didn't read or watch any reviews about the book to avoid spoilers so I REALLY appreciate the heads up - I'll be sure to be selective about when I read it. I'm glad to hear that, although you also are not a huge fan of historical fiction, you found it an enjoyable read. Mmm you make a very good point regarding reading academic articles. I often try and do that before working on a book review on a classic book but I did not think of doing the same with the more challenging contemporary novels I'm reading - I will definitely be doing that in the future. And yes, Beloved was another one I definitely did not understand completely! I'll definitely read some literary articles next time I give that a read. Glad to know 100 Years of Solitude is an easier read though! I was hoping to start with a slightly easier work on magical realism lol. Thanks, as always, for your thoughtful comment! Hope you have a lovely day! xx

    Recommendation for a book about Native Americans by a Native American: Life's Journey--Zuya: Oral Teachings from Rosebud by Albert White Hat I read it for a Native American Studies course in college, and it might be the most enjoyable and readable text of my whole degree. Also, I started reading Martyr! a few days ago! Can’t wait to hear what you think of it.

      Thanks so much for the book recommendation from a Native American author. I really appreciate it. I'll be adding it to my ever growing TBR! What a coincidence that you just started reading Martyr! also! Do you have any thoughts on it so far?

      @@NnennaReads The thing that sticks out to me so far is probably the pacing and readability of it. I would not describe that book as being very plot heavy, and it has darker themes and subject matter, both aspects I could see slowing your reading. Despite that, there’s this momentum I feel reading it that makes me want to keep going and find out what happens next.

    Yay! Nietzsche is my favorite philosopher! Glad you’re enjoying the reading experience :) since you’re interested in Philosophy, have you read The Republic by Plato? It’s my favorite philosophical text! Incudes the famous Cave scenario, but also one of my favorite questions for philosophers to try and answer “How to build a perfect city?” It just tells us so much about the time period, the person, the current values, etc. Happy Reading!

      I can definitely see why Nietzsche would be your favorite philosopher - I’ve been really enjoying The Genealogy of Morals. What’s your favorite of his works? I actually have been picking up the republic every now and then over the past year lol! I’ve finally committed to reading it from beginning to end, just finished reading book 1 last week! I didnt love the beginning but I know the good stuff is just about to begin. Happy reading to you also and thanks so much for the lovely comment! xx

    I just went down a bit of a wiki rabbit hole with Audre Lorde (I remember loving some of her poetry in college) and found out that she's Wallace Shawn's sister-in-law. I've been having "My Dinner with Andre" flashbacks for the past five minutes. Can't say I quite saw that one coming. Great reading quarter!

    • @NnennaReads
      @NnennaReads 10 днів тому

      Hello there! Well I have to admit, with everything I know about Audre Lorde I most definitely was not aware of that fun fact! My Dinner With Andre is such a great movie, I've been meaning to re-watch it actually. I got really into the Criterion Channel during Covid lockdowns but I no longer have a subscription. Thanks for the reminder to re-watch it and to get back the Criterion Channel haha. Thanks as always for your great comments and interesting tidbits of information. Hope you've been well!

    • @NnennaReads
      @NnennaReads 6 днів тому

      Haha thanks! After your reminder, I actually think I will get my subscription back this weekend. Any movies / directors on there you'd recommend? So far my favourites have been Bergman (especially Scenes from a Marriage) and Tarkovsky (I cannot stop thinking about Stalker) but I'd like to expand my horizons a bit this time around!

    • @NicholasOfAutrecourt
      @NicholasOfAutrecourt 5 днів тому

      @@NnennaReads Bergman is one of my favorites as well, but I'm more partial to "Wild Strawberries" (which still makes me cry) and "Persona". By favorite by Tarkovsky is Andrei Rublev. I'm far from the cinephile I want to be (somehow, I always prioritize reading over film watching), but there are so many others. Have you seen anything by Kiarostami? I recommend everything in the Koker Trilogy and "Taste of Cherry". Absolutely anything by Robert Bresson. You've probably already seen "Rashomon," I'm guessing. I love Agnes Varda, especially "Cleo from 5 to 7".Most of Satyajit Ray, especially "Pather Panchali," but all of the Apu Trilogy generally. And of course Chantal Akerman's "Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles". Wish I there to watch them with you. I'd bring a charcuterie board and some good wine! Let me know your first impressions if you end up watching anything!

    • @NnennaReads
      @NnennaReads 3 дні тому

      You mentioned so many movies on my list of movies to watch! Similar to you, I tend to prioritize reading over watching films, but I hope to get more into movie watching as the weather outside gets colder. I've actually mainly watched Bergman's later works, so Cries and Whispers, Autumn Sonata, Winter Light. I have been meaning to watch his older films - especially Persona, The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries so since you recommend a few of those I'll be sure to give them a watch. I still need to watch Andrei Rublev! I'm sure it'll end up being my favourite Tarkovsky also, I've heard such great things. Funnily enough, I have watched about 1/2 of Taste of Cherry by Kiarostami, but have never finished it. I actually quite enjoyed it, the issue was more not having the time to focus on it. I haven't seen Rashomon yet but also have heard such great things and have been meaning to get to to it. I also love Varda, but I haven't seen Cleo yet, I've watched Vagabond and Le Bonheur (which I thought was visually beautiful!). I've also watched her short documentary on the Black Panthers which I also really enjoyed. I used to religiously listen to the filmspotting podcast and I know they recommended Satyajit Ray's work so I have been meaning to watch his films also. And I have not watched "Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles" yet as I don't think I'm ready for it lol - maybe in a few years haha. I have finally got around to watching the Battle of Algiers over the past few days and have been really enjoying it. Hopefully this gives me motivation to get back into criterion movies again. Wine and a foreign film is always such a lovely time! Will be sure to report back if I watch any of the films you've mentioned! Thanks so much for sharing your recommendations and have a lovely day!

    I've been really hesitant to pick up Race Matters because of it's age, but your synopsis suggests that it might still have some concrete relevance. Did you notice any gaps with it being an older set of essays?

    • @NnennaReads
      @NnennaReads 10 днів тому

      Thanks so much for the thoughtful question. I'm sure others have hesitated on reading Race Matters for similar reasons. I think because West chooses topics that are still issues today (the importance of affirmative action policies, the lack of leadership in the black community, issues of anti-Semitism in the black community, etc) I found most of the content was timeless. There were occasionally times where the information West gives is only up to the 90s so you can tell some updating would be helpful, but that doesn't happen very frequently. I was re-reading my annotations of this yesterday evening to refresh my memory and West makes so many interesting points, I think it is definitely worth the read even in 2024. Thanks for watching and have a great day!! xx

      Hi there! Thanks for watching - 'm so glad to hear that you're finding the recommendations useful! I have been mulling over whether to continue using Goodreads because of the Amazon issue you mentioned. I actually also have a Storygraph account and should try to use it more. I think I need to spend more time figuring out the features, I've had Goodreads for years now so it's much more intuitive to me. Is there also a way to follow other accounts on storygraph?

    • @disco_l3monade
      @disco_l3monade 9 днів тому

      I feel the same way about the user experience of Goodreads - its function and design reminded me of social media, which made it familiar to navigate. I only just shifted exclusively to Storygraph, though when I had both I always favored Goodreads because that's where it felt like I was most connected to other readers. Storygraph does have the option to 'follow' other accounts, but I've had trouble building community. Hoping that in time I can make more connections!

    • @NnennaReads
      @NnennaReads 6 днів тому

      Yes, you're right, I think it's the community piece that's prevented me from moving exclusively to Storygraph. I'll try to spend some time over the next few weeks building a community on there to see if that changes my experience. What's your account name? I'd love to follow you - at least that would be the beginning of building a community on Storygraph! xx

      Awww thank you so much for the kind message, it really means a lot! I always loved reading as a kid. As I got older I had much less time to read but over the past few years I’ve tried to be very intentional and make more time for reading. It can feel very overwhelming as there is SO much to learn and read, but if you just take it one book at a time you’ll realize over a period of months that you’ve learned so much. Your comment has made me think of posting a video about good books for beginners. I’ll try and film that over the next few weeks. Thanks so much for subscribing. Hope you have a lovely day! 💕💕

      @@NnennaReads Thank you so much for your response, and glad my comment could be helpful! We actually only read an article, not Levitsky's book, though I did put the book on my list after watching your wrap-up. The article we read was by Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way called "Elections Without Democracy: The Rise of Competitive Authoritarianism" (2002) which looked at how various institutions interact with executive government and the ways in which they can legitimize or delegitimize democracy. It was a thought provoking read that covered some angles I hadn't seen in comparative political science yet. Not sure if a lot of the same ideas are also covered in How Democracies Die, but the article is open access and pretty short if you have any interest! :)

I also struggle with Fanons misogyny, he's such an important post-colonial thinker but I always hesitate to read him because of that. And you have asked the right question for me, postcolonial feminism was my main research subject at university haha i feel like I'm really putting my degrees to use The most important theorists I would recommend are 1) Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, her essay "Can The Subaltern Speak?" is very foundational, 2) anything by Chandra Mohanty, 3) of course Audre Lorde, especially her essay "The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House", but she's just an amazing writer in general, 4) Maria Lugones' essay "Toward a Decolonial Feminism", 5) I would also classify Angela Davis as a great postcolonial feminist thinker, but that's just my personal assessment; and for fiction I would recommend Ama Ata Aidoo, Buchi Emecheta, Jamaica Kincaid, Marie NDayie and Zadie Smith (there's obviously much more, those are just the authors I have read) Anyways, love your videos as always!

      Yes, I just started reading Cobalt Red yesterday morning and one of the issues with cobalt that the author mentioned was how much of it is needed in electric vehicles. I live in rural USA where a car is truly a necessary part of life, and I so badly want electric vehicles to be a better solution than they are (at least at this point). If you live somewhere that gets extremely cold or where you’re regularly driving long distances (me in both cases), I just don’t think they make sense compared to an internal combustion engine. Additionally, I think because EVs are a much newer technology, there are wider effects we’re still learning, and we can’t yet see their full scope. Our transportation infrastructure is made for ICEs, and the extra weight of EVs puts more strain on roads, and many safety barriers are far less or just ineffective in EV collisions. Also, they generally have less maintenance compared to ICE, but one major component requiring more maintenance in EVs is their tires; because electric vehicles have higher weight, acceleration, and torque, their tires wear out about 20% faster than ICE. And less maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance. Things like not fully charging or depleting your battery and making sure you don’t always use quick chargers are behavioral factors you need to be mindful of to ensure you aren’t shortening the life of your batteries

      @@NnennaReads hi yes, I'm interested in how you managed to increase your reading with one the rules you highlighted being to read a book twice, I'm paraphrasing. I've found that in order to do that I have to listen to an audiobook first. Also do you feel like this reading method works for fiction books as well? Or just non-fiction. I'm testing a little curriculum on myself, but I'm currently involved in so many reading challenges that I don't think I'll get my test done until September. 😌

    • @NnennaReads
      @NnennaReads 6 днів тому

      Sorry for the late reply, I missed your message. Yes, I listen to about 80% of the books I "read" by listening to the audiobook. And I usually listen to an audiobook at 1.25 or 1.5 speed. This is similar to what Adler speaks of in his book, systematic skimming. If, after finishing the entire audiobook I think it's worth reading more deeply, I'll re-read the book a 2nd time much slower. Typically the 2nd read I will read the physical book, but in some instances I'll re-listen to the audiobook again at a slower pace. And yes, I do this with both fiction and non-fiction! Would love to hear about your reading curriculum once you've finished your test! Have a lovely day! xx

    Thank you for making this video. I feel pretty sure it was your previous video mentioning Adler that motivated me to add his book to my list of "must buy titles" when my Read What I Own Challenge finishes. This was added incentive to read. Inspectional reading seems compassionate. It allows that we cannot read as many books as we want to in an analytical manner, or understand everything we read in a book, and it lets us accept partial understand as worthy.

      Thanks so much for watching and for the support! I love how you phrased it, I agree, inspectional reading is compassionate. I'd be curious to know how the Adler has shaped your reading. Is it a matter of simply reading more than before you read him, or reading more deeply and with more comprehension so that you appreciate what you read more? Or both? Also really curious about your pre-Adler number of books at the one-third mark in previous years. I'm sitting at 10-11 books as of now, which is honestly more than I've read (in the first four months, at least) in years.. Very snail-like, but I'm trying to be more intentional about making even more time for it than I have in the past. Great video!

    • @NnennaReads
      @NnennaReads 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the great question! I have a few comments in response, but I may end up making a video that speaks to how Adler's book has shaped my reading. I've found the pre-reading technique Adler discusses (reading the table of contents, skimming the index, reading the publisher's blurb) has given me a much better idea of what a book is about before reading. This has actually deepened my reading experience (especially with non-fiction books) as I have a roadmap for where the book is going and it allows me to know what chapters I may want to focus on over others. Adler's technique of "systematic skimming" has been most helpful in allowing me to finish challenging books. In the past, when I would get to a difficult concept in a book, I would look up secondary sources on the concept and I would find that I never ended up finishing the book. So by skimming challenging texts, I've found that I've been able to finish books I never thought I would have been able to read on my own before. There are pros and cons to this method, as some may want to deeply read everything they read (and initially I was of that view also). However, I've found that skimming lots of books has been helpful as it allows me to realize what book I should be taking the time to read deeply. For example, I have been looking for a really good book on Palestine, and I've read a number of books that have been recommended by other booktubers. In the past, I would have focused on understanding one of the books inside and out. However, from "skimming" a few books, I've been able to have a better understanding of the issue as a whole, and have now come across a book that feels like the best book to read deeply (or, as Adler would say, to read analytically). Last year was a particularly bad reading year for me haha, but I was at about 5 books by this point in time. While I think part of the reason I've been able to read so much this year is being off work, I think that without Adler's technique, I would probably be closer to 10 books (which is something to be very proud of btw!). I think what I love about Adler's technique is I was attempting to "analytically" read every book. Now I realize that in some instances you can get everything you need out of skimming a book. But i think the biggest thing has been that, skimming a lot books on a subject allows you to find the best book to read deeply. Adler has several chapters about "analytical" reading and I am now implementing these techniques on books that I am reading for a second time. I'll make a video about that soon so you can have a better understanding of how Adler recommends we read deeply. Sorry for the long comment but I hope that clarifies things a bit!

    I remember reading this in college not too long after it first came out and it just completely restructured the way I thought about the whole topic. I've always thought that this was one of Davis's books that could have easily been five times as long. Thankfully, other scholars have more fully fleshed out some of the ideas here, but this is definitely a great place to start that will make you think more skeptically about the cultural air that we swim in and how to not just assume "this is the way things will always be." Activism really takes on the mantle of constantly imagining the world anew. I'm glad there are people out there with imaginations like hers. Superb discussion as always.

      @@TeaWithTash_ You should definitely do it! I started my channel in November 2023, and, honestly it's the best decision I ever made. I would highly recommend it. The booktube community is lovely, I've met such wonderful and kind individuals on here. I would definitely subscribe to a fellow WOC who also loves classics!!

    I discovered your channel through this video. I'm an Octavia E. Butler stan and cannot recommend her work enough. The "Parable" books are great, but I would recommend starting with "Kindred," if you haven't already read thah book. Happy Reading! 😎📚👍

    That’s my friend yall !!😍😍 First off, you look stunning ! The colour of your jumper really compliments your skin tone! Also, I’m not much of a reader apart from reading the Bible but you’ve inspired me to challenge myself to read different books to learn and educate myself more! 📚 Great video sis

    For a novel on the colonization of the Congo I have heard good reviews of "King Leopold's Ghost..." by Adam Hoshchild, though it has a lot of graphic details and is not on modern history.
