Connie Yori Commits to Creighton—3/20/82
Next to Caitlin Clark, Connie Yori was arguably the greatest women’s basketball player to come from Iowa. She enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Creighton University in Omaha, then later coached at Creighton in between coaching stops at Loras and Nebraska. For the last several years, Connie had acted in an advisory capacity for the women’s basketball program at Creighton. In June 2024, she announced her retirement as an advisor. Back on March 20, 1982, I had the good fortune to break the story that she had signed with Creighton to play basketball there. The interview occurred on WHO-AM’s Saturday Sportsline program, originating from Des Moines. I’m Michael D. Lee, and I worked at WHO-AM in news and sports from 1980-1983.

Top 5 NBA stars thru the 1970s

NBA stars need to be placed in two separate eras. The first era goes up through 1978-79, when there was no three-point line. I take a look at the top five stars of that era, presenting them in alphabetical order by last name, making no attempt to rank them one through five.

In 1954 a small high school team from Milan, Indiana turned into giant killers as they won a state basketball title over a much larger school, Muncie Central. That Milan team provided the inspiration for the 1986 movie Hoosiers, starring Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper. The man who hit the winning shot for Milan in that 1954 game is still alive as of March 2024. His name is Bobby Plump, and I in...

Shortly before the Alabama vs Georgia football game in 1962, a man by the name of George Burnett was accidentally patched into a telephone call between Georgia athletic director Wally Butts and Alabama head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. What he heard sent shockwaves throughout the sports world. This is an interview with the man who’s written the authoritative book on the whole matter.

I foresee the NBA expanding to 36 teams by 2036 and I can see Seattle, Vegas, Mexico City, Vancouver OR Montreal and two other US cities. Vancouver is larger than Vegas, and Montreal is as big as Seattle. As for West vs East... if 4 of the 6 teams are Western teams, then just one Western team needs to move east to keep the 18-18 ratio ... top candidate to move east would be Minnesota (it is so far from all the other Western Teams) as they are very close to Milwaukee, Chicago, and Indianapolis while Memphis and New Orleans are already very close to the 3 Texas teams and even closer to Oklahoma City which happens to be the closest Western Conference team to Minneapolis.

A great aspect of the story is the great breeder, Christopher Chenery. From a small operation he managed at the culmination of his life to breed Derby winners, two in a row. He almost won two in a row triple crowns, but Bee Bee Bee (trained by Del Carroll) loved mud and Riva hated it. Chenery rates as America’s Tessio.

If the UFL expires , I think the networks should offer some of the smaller college football Conferences a deal to Play football in the Spring. There are to many College football teams to follow in the Fall anyway. It’s a no brainer .

I also have concerns about Chicago because the Cubs have such a loyal fan base plus White Sox. I would prefer Denver because the Rockies are weak plus 18th market.

This should happen, at lest this is what I would do if I owned the UFL. St. Louis, San Antonio, DC, Birmingham, should stay were they are. Allington should move to Oakland, or San Diego. Houston should go to El Paso or else Little Rock Albuquerque, or Tulsa. Memphis should get a complete rebrand and go to Honolulu with a name like Hawaii Islanders Lava, Fury or Sharks or better yet Hawaii Breakers. Michigan should go to Omaha or Milwaukee. For expansion they should take it easy, but I would try to go with Sault Lake City, Boise, Louisville, and Anchorage. You could use old XFL and or USFL names like Dragons, Gold, Legends etc.. But some other great names would be Utah Lakers, Boise Mountaineers, Louisville Wildcats, and Anchorage Kings. The key is to go to cities that don't have NFL teams, preferably in States without a NFL team, or a market were the NFL teams are not doing well.

  • @hulluporo9067

I do hope the UFL will be a permanent fixture and will partner up with the NFL. I would like to see what FOX and the USFL were trying to do and bring back all the former USFL teams. I know it will probably take up to 10-15 years with future expansion. Well, this is what I wish the UFL would eventually be like with a league of 28 teams. Once again there would be 2 Conferences, the USFL conference and the XFL conference. Each conference would have 14 teams in them with 2 divisions (with 7 teams in them). The USFL conferences 2 divisions would be the North and South divisions. The North division would consist of the Chicago Blitz, Denver Gold, Hartford Federals (formerly the Washington Federals), Michigan Panthers, New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Stars, and the Pittsburgh Maulers. The south division would be the Austin Gamblers (formerly the Houston Gamblers), Birmingham Stallions, Jacksonville Bulls, Memphis Showboats, New Orleans Breakers, Orlando Warriors (formerly the Orlando Renegades), and the Tampa Bay Bandits. The XFL conference would have the East and West divisions. The East division would consist of the Arlington Renegades, DC Defenders, Houston Roughnecks, Ohio Guardians (formerly the Orlando Guardians, and yes they play in Canton Ohio), Oklahoma Outlaws, San Antonio Brahmas, and the St. Louis Battlehawks. The West division would consist of the Arizona Wranglers, Los Angeles Express, Portland Vipers (formerly the Vegas Vipers), Salt Lake City Gunslingers (formerly the San Antonio Gunslingers), San Diego Wildcats (formerly the LA Wildcats), Seattle Sea Dragons and the Oakland Invaders (it would probably be San Jose or Sacramento, Northern California for sure for the Invaders since the stadium in Oakland is in dire need of repairs). I know there will be people saying the San Diego team should be the Fleet but that was an AAF team (and the UFL does not have the rights to them) and besides the USFL/XFL would rather bring back the Express and Wildcats. The regular season would be a 13-game season

Eventually they will become the minor league for the NFL!! Take basketball for example,it was about 15 years now that minor league basketball started. It used to be you went from either high school(if you were better than excellent) or college basketball to the NBA,but the ones who never made it ended up getting locked out! Then the advent of summer league NBA which was a prerequisite to minor league NBA changed everything!!

A smaller stadium with areas to walk around and socialize and view the game at the same time is something executives do not value but I value as a fan. If I must sit in an assigned seat to watch a game I feel like I am in kiddie prison.. or public school as Nazis call it.

Please stop using the word "market" when referring to metropolitan areas. You're making it sound like we fans are just customers. Also, the plan is to slowly repopulate the teams they had to put "in stasis." So, of the metro areas you're talking about, it's Philly and Jersey - and I have heard those are on deck for possibly next year.

I like the thinking, although keeping divisions based on USFL VS XFL will add travel costs. I feel adding teams to large(ish) markets without NFL teams would be the better step forward. Yes, you're not getting the NY/Philly or SF/Oakland markets but I have my doubts that either of those markets will travel to New Jersey or San Jose respectively. My choices for expansion cities (CAPS) and divisions with market rank West East SACRAMENTO - 20 COLUMBUS, OH - 32 SALT LAKE CITY - 29 St. Louis - 24 SAN DIEGO - 30 Detroit - 14 Houston - 6 Wash D.C. - 9 Arlington - 5 Memphis - 50 San Antonio - 31 Birmingham - 46 These are all large(ish) cities that currently have no NFL team and while Sacramento and San Diego have spring competition from the NBA and MLB, the UFL ticket prices should be less than MLS tickets (current avg of $45-55), much less actually. Columbus will likely be inside of the Top 30 in the next few years as it's one of the fastest growing cities in the US and will be opening an Intel semiconductor plant within the next few years spurring that growth. Salt Lake is making moves for MLB and NHL franchises and Sacramento only has the Kings to compete against (I'm obviously excluding minor league teams). All-in-all these are markets on the upswing.
