Neil Roberts on The Horus Heresy: Books 1-4
I got to visit Neil Roberts, the illustrator for Black Library's Horus Heresy series. Neil's work spans the entire 64 books in the series, and given the narrative is beloved by so many in the hobby, it was really exciting to meet him and hear how he first got involved in the project and how he became the sole illustrator for the series. We also look at his artwork for the first 4 books in the series:
- Horus Rising (Book 1)
- False Gods (Book 2)
- Galaxy in Flames (Book 3)
- Flight of the Eisenstein (Book 4)

Final Liberation: Epic 40k - Classic Warhammer PC Games
Переглядів 2,7 тис.19 годин тому
Final Liberation: Epic 40k was one of my earliest introductions to Warhammer. The Geoff Taylor artwork lives rent free in my head, and the game's wide array of units, heavy metal soundtrack, and movie cut scenes featuring the iconic Commissar Holt really caught my imagination as a kid, and its a game I still play pretty much weekly. So it was really great for me to have a chat with Andrew Green...
Trish Carden and Mark Farr on Marauder Miniatures

I popped over to see Trish Garden and Mark Farr to hear them chatting about their time operating as Marauder Miniatures. A really wonderful period in GW's history, it was great to hear their comments - especially on Marauder putting its stamp on future editions of Warhammer Fantasy Battle. The pair of them also treated me to an impressive display of their collections of Marauder Miniatures and ...

Robin Dews chatted with me about his time working on White Dwarf, picking out 12 memorable issues that for him hold a lot of professional and personal value. Some really interesting insights into the direction he wanted to take the magazine, including battle reports and cover illustrations. You can buy Robin and John's book "Talking Miniatures" here: www.talkingminiatures.co.uk/ These videos we...

A video I'd wanted to shoot for a long time, Andy Chambers was kind enough to sit down and talk about Battlefleet Gothic - from the initial concept to the release of the starter box set, and beyond with its support from Fanatic/Specialist Games and Forgeworld. Really awesome to hear him talk so passionately about the game and considering how well loved it is still, hopefully you'll enjoy this! ...

Last year John Stallard and Robin Dews, both veterans of Games Workshop, released "Talking Miniatures" - a wonderful book filled with conversations, stories and accounts from a wide range of "key" personnel from Games Workshop's past, including Rick Priestley, Bob Naismith, Tony Ackland and many more. It recently won the "Best Gaming Accessory" from On Table Top, and is an excellent book well w...

I popped up north to see Mike McVey! We'd been wanting to film this for a little while now, so it was really great to be able to go visit him and hear him talk about his career through GW and 'Eavy Metal, and have a look at some of the guidebooks he produced back then. John Blanche discussing more of his iconic artwork

Back in August 2023 I uploaded my first video - John Blanche discussing a few of his most famous pieces of Warhammer Art. It was really well received as there wasn't much of this sort of thing online. Since then I've gone on to do a number of other videos, but John and I decided it'd be good to do another Art video. Similar format as before, we picked a few of his iconic pieces and just got him...

I spent an afternoon hanging out with Jervis Johnson and Rick Priestley who were kind enough to spend a bit of time chatting about the history and development of Necromunda. There's some really interesting talk about the "shrinking the 40k sandbox" mindset, and how the game's continued support through Fanatic Magazine came to an end (in an official capacity). Rick also discovers Warhammer: The ...

I think part of the reason its stood the test of time, aside from the aesthetic, is that 40k is a horrible but fascinating setting yet its vastness is so big that it makes it all too effervescent. Outside of Cadia its rare a world gets mentioned often other than earth and we're pretty familiar with that one so the imagination doesn't run as wild. But Necromunda shrinks it down to a mapped out world with names and places similar in ways to the old world of warhammer fantasy battles. We can hear names of places and people and they aren't just characters in books or a one off event but part of this singular living world where things change to a degree but its still 40k at the end of the day and that end result is something pretty special.

The thing Trish said about the influence of Marauder is bang on. All the Warhammer fantasy minis after Marauder, looked way more like Marauder minis than the citadel stuff that had gone before. Marauder may have been reabsorbed, but stylistically, Marauder took over.

When creating art for an existing IP, changing things to “put your mark on it” and betrays a very narcissistic personality. And giving them long hair because he’d just watched lord of the rings is poor use of artistic license imo.

great interview! neil's style is iconic, painting something to look cgi is something else. absolutely scrambled to get that art book with the full works printed in it. I adore how detailed he makes space marines. So much heraldry and iconography. This is such an amazing documentation of heresy as an endeavour. Its an amazing setting and story, but how it came to be as we know it now is as equally, if not more, interesting.

I don't quite agree on the house mag issue... I'm old enough to remember and I have the mags to prove it when White Dwarf did articles on D&D, Traveller, Runequest etc. Yes, GW did sell them back then, but the critical difference in my opinion is that GW did not produce those games. And WD also ran covers from general fantasy/scifi artists like Chris Achilleos. Later it too became all inhouse art, often redos of box and book covers.
