That plastic skeleton set. I seem to remember it being 12 quid for thirty skeleton warriors, some bow skellies, plus some horsemen and a chariot. Blew my tiny little ten year old mind. Was incredible value for the time, plus the sculpts looked exceptional.

My mother was a bit appalled by the box art, it was kind intense for its time. The gaunt skulls and barbed weapons made her shiver. Just made me love them all the more, of course! I bought the Realm of Chaos books around the same time and those I just plain hid from her like they were dirty mags. Those were truly transgressive and I loved them.

I met Bob in the Car park of GW's HQ (Chewton St, Eastwood, circa 1989) where he had a portacabin. It was in here he showed me the initial "Epic" scale marines that he had individually injection moulded the concept of producing these tiny minis in plastic on a vast scale, the 5mm metal minis included within the "Adeptus Titanicus" blistered titans was unsustainable (at an army level) due to the exceptional demand in production at the factory for 28mm figs. Thanks for a great interview Bob, it was always a pleasure to work & talk to you, all the best.

Having had one or two for many years, I only just recently got the rest of the C100 space marines, made me really happy to finally get the whole set together. I also sculpt my own minis from time to time, even won a community competition once, not that anything came of it, and even though I find sculpting by hand easy, in the sense you can just making things with a bit of putty and some tools, I always loved the idea of digital sculpting and maing everything perfect! Only problem for me is that, 1. I have absolutely no clue how to use the free sculpting programmes, and don't know enough to even judge if there any good and 2. no where near enmough money to get into the proper, professional ones that Bob mentioned; last time I looked into it it was several hundred pounds and you only got a license to rent the thing not actually own a copy.
Anyway, great interview, Bob seems like a really nice guy and I always loved his sculpts for the individuality of them, the digital sculpts might be more polished perhaps (if they haven't cut corners with the design) but they can be a bit hollow somehow, and lack the life of a hand sculpted miniature.

That was lovely to see this and hear from Bob about the creation of the very first Space marines! He can be very proud to be the first one to make them materialize in the world of three dimensions! Is that a haptic feedback sculpt input pen I see on the desk? Always wondered if those were any good?
Just thinking now it would be really interesting to see how a, say, Primaris model would look were it sculpted in more of a traditional way. I mean same size but with the olde materials and techniques. I like much of GW's new stuff there's also something a bit missing with like Bob says a bit too perfect edges, simple cylinder and other primitive shapes and hyper smooth surfaces.
Thank you both for this video! :)
