    WOW. You're taking the puzzle deal to a new level. The way that you have laid out the puzzle for the stripes to match up is impressive. Im going to assume that you already have the work piece glued up and know the exact size of the stripes? Even a little bit off would throw it all out of wack. Im looking forward to seeing the finished product.

    • @EricksonWoodworking
      @EricksonWoodworking 5 днів тому

      Absolutely!! The center zero is critical for all those pieces to match up. The stripes are .5” making the overall dimension of the flag 12 x 6.5. Should be really fun to make.

    Looks cool, add skirting to the bottom shelves to hide the ugly plugs. it really distracts from all the beautiful wood.

  • @ifiwooddesigns
    @ifiwooddesigns 8 днів тому

    Love the floating bed with shelves and the voice activated lights really accents it. I plan on making something similar although have two questions: 1) what were the dimensions of the bottom platform, and 2) did you have to screw headrest to studs so bed doesn’t tip when sitting on side or ‘riding’ the ends? Great work as always.

    • @EricksonWoodworking
      @EricksonWoodworking 8 днів тому

      Thanks! The dimensions of the bottom platform were made of 2x10s, giving me the height for the bed frame off the ground. Overall, it measured 59"x34" with the bed frame spanning 79"x74", giving me an overhang of 20" around the entire bed. I literally have to get on my hands and knees and look under to see the bottom platform supports. It gives it a really cool effect. For securing, I put 2x4s on the backside of the headboard, center spaced to the wall studs. I anchored the entire headboard along the wall studs, then secured the bedframe and platform to the headboard 2x4's. This gave me a lot of strength through the entire frame and tied everything together. Those dimensions should be based on your bed size though, this was a Cali King, so everything was larger than most. Good luck with the future build!!

That being said,,, I'm 80 years old, have a 21 laser and just bought some veneers so I think I might be able to at least make a landscape scene. Not as intricate as yours but at least the first attempt. I'm not familiar at all what the techniques and supplies needed to do this. So could you be so kind as to tell me what that paper/tape is called that you lay the project down on? Thank you so much for sharing with all of us! Thanks Tom! I really appreciate it! I’ll be doing a step by step marquetry video next month and hopefully will help. The transfer paper I use is called Standard Grip Transfer Tape by Make Market. I use some other one too, it all depends on what I can find and have on hand. I got the transfer tape from Michaels, which any of the hobby stores carry it. What I like about it, it has just enough adhesive, which is tacky, to hold the pieces without movement during glueing, but weak enough to pull up without damaging the veneer once the glue has cured. Also, the glue doesn’t stick to so it’s a perfect combo to the tape method, which can be frustrating. Hope this helps and if you need any help, please email me!

    • @EricksonWoodworking
      @EricksonWoodworking Місяць тому

      @@Qwiv I get what you are saying. The reason I cut the splines that way, instead of cutting along the long grain, is when sanded, the long grain cut exposes the end grain for the face of the installed spline. The inlays that run perpendicular to the splines don’t match and is noticeable. Some argue this is a weaker method, but some argue that splines don’t strengthen the joint overall. I use splines for the additional plane of glue for the joint, while adding a neat design feature. I probably explained that wrong.

    Glad to see that I’m not the only one that has a tendency to be liberal with the amount of glue applied! Really enjoy your work and tutorials, it’s a pleasure to see the final result and the creativity. I’m just curious 🧐 about the splines, wouldn’t they be stronger if instead of cross cutting them, they were rip cut? Or is cross cutting them for the final visual effect? I kind of like both look for the finish, just can’t decide on which one is better looking. Would it be possible for you to make a tutorial on the marquetry aspect of your work, I know you have made a few great ones in the past, but I’m really interested in your creative thought process, the graphic part of the projects, the laser aspect of the project , and how do you organize your marquetry for assembly, l know it’s a big ask, I done a few marquetry projects in the past and I think my downfall is I tend to go for projects with fine details, and the assembly can get to be overwhelming at times 🤯. As always looking forward for your next videos 👍👍👍

    • @EricksonWoodworking
      @EricksonWoodworking Місяць тому

      Thanks Roger! For the Splines, I like to use the cross cut keys, as the grain semi matches the corners without seeing the end grain. For strength, the splines are thin, but that additional layer of the glue plane gives it all the strength it needs. I’m absolutely going to do an in depth marquetry how-to, hopefully by the end of the month. They can get extremely overwhelming very fast depending on the design, but just think of it as a crazy jigsaw puzzle. Cheers!

      @@EricksonWoodworking I get it...I have the same "problem" according to my wife. I just know I've gone to ebay searching for small offcuts of exotic and random hardwood species that I could use on my projects (small boxes and bowls). While I like traveling, the idea of making the 3 hours or 6 hours drive (depending on whether I want to make the trip to San Francisco or Los Angles) to reputable lumber sources doesn't always appeal to me, nor does it make much economical sense. I would think there are many other people out there that are in a similar situation. Putting together a USPS Priority box of offcuts might be something others would be interested in purchasing from you could be a good thing, knowing it helps support you and also provides them with things they might not have available to them where they are. It would seem like it would be a win-win situation. Just a thought.

    Like the results on maple. I wonder if the heat would cause the veneer to delaminate? This would be my choice on some fiddleback maple veneered speaker cabinets. Just don't know if that heat would cause delamination between the wood and the substrate.

      Yeah it’s hard to say, sometimes it does take a lot of heat to start the reaction. Glue could unset
