    Hello i was looking for a simple sled and came across this. I have a couple of questions. What material are you using for the base and will melamine work? I dont see any clamps or ttracks. How are you holding the material? What are you using for the runners? I couldnt catch it.

    • @TwinSummitDesigns
      @TwinSummitDesigns 6 днів тому

      Base I am using Formply typically used for concrete, but you can use Plywood as well. Melamine could work I guess, but I have not tried that myself. Holding the material - I am assuming you mean the holding the material you are cutting on the sled? I’m not clamping anything to the sled. It just pushes up against the fence of the sled and holding it down on either side of the blade. Mitre bars for the tracks. I cover that in the video. Check the description as well for more info. 👍🏻

    This is perfect for beginners, thanks Josh. Simple and nothing too fancy. Will be making an even shorter one of these for quick and straight cuts! Quick question: why did you suggest not lining up the blade with the factory edge, but rather overlapping? Was it to ensure the edge is flush with the blade after the first cut?

    • @TwinSummitDesigns
      @TwinSummitDesigns 25 днів тому

      You are welcome. Yes it is to ensure the first cut is flush with the base but also the edge you install for the saw to follow, if that makes sense. If that edge is slightly off, then the factory edge won’t help much as a guide.

    • @TwinSummitDesigns
      @TwinSummitDesigns 25 днів тому

      Yes, exactly. The idea is that you can always move the guide rail back to get a new straight edge flush with the blade if you change blades or if the edge is damaged. Much harder to line the guide up 100% with the edge if that makes sense.

    I noticed you mentioned the issue of an unlevel floor resulting in twisting of the spoil board. While most folk try to cancel this out with a torsion box, I took a different approach that seems to work quite well. I have a large cart under my CNC unit, with a 2.5 inch thick top built up with MDF, and with the usual 4 large casters, one in each corner. On my cart, the front casters are mounted normally, but the rear casters are in the far corners as well, but attached to a long plywood beam that hinges in the middle, so they automatically compensate for any irregularity in my garage floor. The effect is like the difference between a 4 legged stool and a 3 legged stool. I can roll my cart anywhere on my bumpy garage floor and all 4 wheels remain firmly on the floor. Now this doesn't guarantee the top will always be level, but it is free of any twisting. I suppose if the exact level concept were an issue I could re-engineer the rear central pivot point with some form of vertical adjustment? It is currently just a 1 1/2 inch piece of galvanized pipe that the multi-layered plywood beam pivots on.

    • @TwinSummitDesigns
      @TwinSummitDesigns 2 місяці тому

      I would love to see that. Sounds like you put a lot of thought into that! A torsion box works well, but something like a Greg bench would do the same. I could not get or find a big enough one in Australia and the ones that ere available are very expensive. But neither would compensate for a floor that is not level like your design does. I suppose you could attach screw in legs that extend past the wheels to lift the bench on each corner individually to level it if you want to. Find that a pain on my gib laser because you can’t move it if you need access behind it.

    • @gjforeman
      @gjforeman 2 місяці тому

      @@TwinSummitDesigns I'm 73 now, but I learned the beam-mounted rear wheels, (actually, it was legs back then), when I was just out of the service, working in an appliance shop in 1974. There was a line of washing machines that had the two rear feet on a long beam that pivoted in the center, so no matter how out of warp the floor was, the machine always sat securely without requiring a bunch of fumbling with screw-adjustable feet in the rear. Somehow, when I was designing my CNC cart, this thought came to me as I struggled to make it sit squarely. Plywood was far cheaper back in 2016, and I'd hate to have to build it now, but the concept should play just as well in a scaled down cart or table. I need it to have wheels because it sits directly in front of our house's main water shutoff valve. Because the massive valve and pressure regulator stick out several inches, the rear of the cart body stops several inches short of the rear of the top, and the balance beam is hidden in a low long box that is attached to the main box and fits below the valve. An odd looking contraption, but it somehow works.

      Thanks very much! I try to leave the masking on while I’m working, but the paper masking that comes with most acrylic sheets sometimes soaks up any minor spills so if you can add another layer somehow that would be great. Interestingly enough, the last batch of black (cast) acrylic I bought had a plastic layer, not paper. That seems to work much better for what you mentioned.

    The reason the bottle isn’t working right is because you don’t know how to use it correctly. You shouldn’t be doing tutorials if you don’t know what you are talking about. You have to squeeze some air out of the bottle while it’s upright and then turn it upside down this creates a vacuum and allows you to control it and it doesn’t drip and allows you incredible control. I’ve been using those bottles for 30 years an experienced person hates the syringe method

    How strong is this bond? If I were trying to build a table would this hold?

    • @TwinSummitDesigns
      @TwinSummitDesigns 3 місяці тому

      It is a chemical bond so the layers basically fuse together. I know people build fish tanks the same way. Hopefully that gives you an idea. Have not tried building a table though.

      This might be an alternative: amzn.to/3Y8LHh3 Else, take a look at EMA Plastic Weld. I have not tried it yet but that looks good too.

    Love this design. I have watched so many of these builds and this one solves many of my issues. The drawers are a MUST have but in my case.... I am making 3 instead of 2 large ones. One for my router bits....one for my saw blades and the 3rd for drill bits. Thank you for the great video.

      You are very welcome! In hindsight I should have done 3 drawers as well. I might still change it at some point. Other than that, I’m still happy with the design.

    I tried this but when I squeeze my bottle and let go, it plumps right back up with air immediately. Do you know how I can fix this?

    • @TwinSummitDesigns
      @TwinSummitDesigns 4 місяці тому

      Mmmm… All I can think of is the needle you are using might be too big or the bottle is not sealed properly. If the needle is too big it will definitely fill up with air quickly.

    Hi, I see you used a CNC machine to do the brackets to hang your drills etc. I don't have one so will have to go with a more simple design for these, if I actually make this this unit. I have the same steel shelving units in my two car garage/workshop. I had a look at your clamp rack video, and will make it and attach it it to the end of the shelving as well. I also like and will make, your 'simple' Cros-Cut sled. I even have some of the black/Formply as well. Great videos and have subscribed. Thanks heaps. kmdc from Oz.

      Hey Keith! You are welcome mate! The plans I have for this rack does include printable templates you can stick onto a sheet to trace and cut. A bandsaw would help heaps but I would be able to do the same with a jigsaw, even though it’s my least favourite tool to use. Thanks for the comment!
