I only half buy the explanation that reaching max jump height was done for responsiveness. I think the real reason for reduced universal jumpsquat and high jump acceleration was to make combos possible at all with the new balloon knockback. You can see this clearly with a character like dedede. Down throw back air was a bread and butter combo in smash 4, but it doesn't work in ultimate despite being able to get the aerial out several frames faster. It also creates new blind spots for characters where there previously weren't any. Characters with high jumps, larger disparities between short and full hops, and aerials with startup that isn't wicked fast now have awkward heights at which neither short hop aerials nor full hops aerial hit or combo into themselves properly, which is further compounded by the inability to buffer full hop aerials. This is very easy to notice with falco, wii fit, or zss. I personally think this new defensive and offensive meta sucks and I majorly preferred smash 4. It's a good thing for moves to have lag and to have earlier access to grounded options out of shield because it makes spacing more important, as well as strengthening the option of not doing an aerial. The balance of the roster is undeniably better in ultimate, but the system mechanics? Man, I think it's a travesty.

I've always said Ultimate has this "flea-like" aspect to it's gameplay. They overcorrected in some really flawed ways after Smash 4, whose shield was a major source of problems. Unfortunately this aspect of Ultimate's gameplay was just too much for me to stick with it lol

Imo I think footstool OoS is a cool mechanic that checks people for bad spacing and is a skillful option for defensive play. I'm a biased Lucas player that gets Djcz off of it so... ya know.

I'm almost positive that Counter Throw was buffed in terms of "Where the hit box is to activate it", I've already proved all my friends wrong that this move is actually really good to use and I've made it the bain of everyone's existence existence
On the topic of footstools, I LOVE what PM did with them. Make it taunt!!! No character can perform an aerial taunt and it ensures that you’re attempting to get a footstool (as opposed to lucking into one). I could maybe excuse that Steve/ZSS clip if I knew that the Steve player intentionally pressed the taunt button in midair because they had the awareness to recognize it’s only possible to footstool in time to get out of the combo.
This is a really great video!!! You hint at this a lot, but the one thing I’d emphasize directly is the power of “hovering” at shoulder height in front of your opponent. The fast jump/initial acceleration + faster fall allows characters to jump into that height range and then fall quickly and rejump when they start to fall out of it. Leaning on the too-soon-forgotten, iconic “Bubble Theory” (first defined by HBox for how he spaces in Melee), shoulder height in front of most characters is really awkward to cover since few attack reach there (without committing aerial drift or a dash forward). It’s typically a pretty safe place to be to feel out neutral and try to bait your opponent into committing to an attack or a retreat. That’s a big reason why characters with strong frontal anti-air (like Kazuya, as you show in this video) tend to do well - they just down that entire play style and characters need to adapt a new approach. Of course, there’s a perfect case study of this phenomenon: Peach. Analyze any Peach player and you’ll see how much they hover in that head/shoulder region - it’s what allows them to pressure with Peach’s strong aerials while not overcommitting. I’ll also note that that height also allows the player to cover (most) platform movement options as well. It’s really a great video!!! Just wanted to add another point to emphasize your thesis :)
My friend Plays Mii problem and makes Mii brawler the most anoying moveset possible and he spams the counter and we keep falling for it I don’t even know why
I just love the idea of shot put in general Shot Put is specifically designed to actually kill, unlike the normal ark traveling projectiles which do a little bit of damage but start combos

Fun fact about Counter Throw: It's knockback is enough to kill a Ganon doing Warlock Punch at center stage. Yes, other counters can do it, I won't doubt that fact. But I think it's funniest with Mii Brawler.

So lemme get this straight, you have a whole ass hurt box you can just spawn, a move that can reliably kill at 100% or higher and basically a perfect shield with a built in counter that acts as projectile? MAN WHAT THE FUCK?

So ultimate Mash=Win. l honestly felt smash 4 more patient gameplay set apart good players from bad players, while ultimate rewards you for pressing buttons (one prime example of this is cloud and joker spamming back air to trap you on the ledge, or sora spaming fair in plain neutral with no repercussions) Also Game&watch come on🤣

Honestly I prefered the shield meta in smash 4. Mainly because it was more consistent and the initial jump height increase nerf mario bair out of shield and other rising aerials for that matter. I also the old shield drop was better imo
Everyone in ultimate now having a 3 frame jump squat made me love the game more.
I love smash 4. ❤ it was my first and its still my favourite.

This and the balloon knockback are 2 major reasons why I dislike this game so much. Game feels too different from previous games and not in a good way.
