Chelsea Defensive Issues: What Maresca Needs To Fix Before It Breaks His Team.
Переглядів 1,9 тис.2 місяці тому
In the PL opener, Guardiola's City ran out 2-0 winners, but highlighted the flaws in Maresca's work-in-progress.. Here's how they exploited the defensive imbalance on the left side & and strong man-marking, and what Maresca will have to fix.
What do you think about caicedo as inverted rb and someone like Carney or Felix where gusto was
I was thinking the same when I was watching Gusto waste all those great opportunities. It's the curse of positional play, all of the positional rotations sometimes lead to the wrong player in the right position.
really enjoyed how you included examples of not just the various tactical issues going bad, but when the same tactics succeeded too--had a lot of "ohhhh" moments while watching this as a result. your understanding of space and positioning is truly impeccable. maresca confuses me sometimes. he flat out said he likes gusto as the 10 before the match. bro what. sure, gusto's crossing last year was great and it's a damn shame we don't get that anymore, but a guy who has never scored once in his career is not exactly a trustworthy attacking option...like he's clearly a good manager, but some of his decisions occasionally spin my head, and the doubt returns. a fully-fit reece might excel at that lb-to-right10 role though. but "fully fit" always comes before "excel" lol
Enjoyed and learnt as usual UTC!
As always, you have a good analysis
Thanks bro!
Some fans treat Madeuke like a pet puppy who gets away with everything, but hopefully he has a year before his skills are assessed at Champions League level. It would be great if he made a breakthrough in football intelligence. You can look at it from different angles, and that's fine. Either you see this team as a hotbed of talent, or you demand progress as soon as possible. And some fans take the presence of certain players for granted, and that bolsters their confidence in their judgment. But is the club happy? The purchase of Neto for 60 million, the attempt to buy Olise, the attempt to buy Osimhen - all this says otherwise.
5:25 - Yes, Madueke should have passed. And in a few other situations. He picks terrible moments to shoot, he doesn't scan. He needs to work a lot on his decision making. He had 6 shots and none of them exceeded 0.1xg, and the goal was a rebound, pure luck. I would bench Madueke in favor of Neto. If you look at each shot in detail, you can find options for Madueke to increase the threat to the opponent's goal. Often through a pass. Particularly memorable is the moment with his shot from the central zone, when he could play to the right, to a free Palmer and Jackson, who was alone in front of the near post.
The selfishness of Noni Madueke makes he a shit players, he needs to pass the ball sometimes, Assists are also goal contribution
noni's layoff options were gusto and enzo edge of the box lol obviously decision making wasn't perfect but to pretend like he passed up on high xG opportunities was insane. if one winger is going to just not shoot the ball, id much rather my other winger be a high volume shooter even if some of the shots aren't the highest xG. noni can hopefully get himself into better positions as he grows and chelsea will be better for it.
I agree with this assessment!
lol yeah, sancho always forgetting he's allowed to shoot and noni often choosing to not pass the ball when that's the better option isn't ideal...but a shit ton of teams would die to have one winger racking up assists and the other winger racking up goals. balance!
Had my doubts on him early last year, but he has impressed me a lot, especially his work off the ball, and he's been good so far long, may it continue..
That oop work is key. Guy is working his socks off both ways
All this Neto talk, I think Noni is far better than him
12 goals and 3 assists in 3 seasons. Please don’t insult Salah by comparing him to this mediocre and selfish player.
At the same age, Salah had 2 goals and an assist in 13 games in the PL. 9 goals and 7 assists in 47 games in the SWISS league. The entire point of this video is to say that you shouldn't be dismissing him this early.
@@cfccentral3 In 13 games not in THREE seasons. Over 50 appearances. Noni wouldn’t even start for any top 6 side with that kind of output. Not even United
What team do you start for? You fool@@AbdulB
@@GaniyuOmonike-r7n What are u opening ur rotten mouth to insult me for? See how brainless u are that the only retort u have is insults.
@@GaniyuOmonike-r7n why are u calling ur father here?
Good work again 👏
Thank you so much!
Noni was our best attacker vs Forest, rly don't get why so many ppl hate on him. Feels forced, this fanbase just need to blame someone.
Yeah he was definitely a handful and that's what you want him to do. People look at the number of shots he takes and are understandably frustrated, but that fact he has 4 goals from just 1.9 xG speaks volumes too. Just let him do his thing, in the long term it looks like a viable strategy.
His decision making is quite terrible, he has a selfish streak in him
This is an awesome analysis, there was a youtuber, Nouman, in the past, who did excellent Chelsea analysis, but unfortunately, he had health issues and has stopped. Thanks for stepping up!
I know Nouman! Used to watch his stuff when he was making loads of content. Had no idea he had health issues, hopefully he can get well soon and get back to making incredible work.
Beautiful analysis
Thank you very much!
great work sam, how you rate maresca as a tactitian and his ingame changes
Thanks Sharath! I was cynical when he joined, I watched a lot of Leicester but he didn't make a lot of changes there. He's adapted very well here, easing off on the heavy man-to-man marking, experimenting with players in different roles, playing a fully rotated XI. Very anti-Italian manager things! In-game management has so far been quite good, picks up on issues quickly as well.
No midfielder in the league is matching up with Baleba when it comes to speed n athleticism. You’d do well by just saying that, not practically making it seem like Enzo is the only one getting spun by him. 😂😂
@@GD_14-10 if it was Caicedo on him, 100% it would have been a different game. Enzo got spun by Wieffer too in the first sequence.
Great analysis. With all the hype about Palmer from the media, yet you managed to highlight this lad's flaws. Palmer needs to help his friends with defending.
@@sikulumelu1sinyangwe648 ah thank you! He's such a brilliant attacker and this is just one of the few things he can build and improve on. Some of his defensive aspects are great, he reads passes really well and makes great interceptions. But tracking, indirect pressure... That's what takes him to the next level. It's only his second season, I expect him to improve
Excellent analysis mate. Wes Fofana has been unfairly criticized for his performances by many fans (including me) but this video has helped me understand his importance to the team. Cheers 🍻
@@ameyajayakar thanks Ameya! Yeah he's had a rough time of it lately but was very good against Brighton
We don't really care about Palmer off the ball work rate😂

Fofana would not have to do all that if Palmer did his job of covering one of brighton's midfielder. I know he scored goals but so did Haaland and Debryune and they still track back

@@muqm7062 haha thank you so much for the honest feedback! Shall definitely try and get it changed
super interesting. i think out-of-possession nuances are the hardest part of tactics to grasp for people new to the whole actually-analyzing-the-game thing like me, so i love that you go into such detail on topics like this--seeing the play examples from the end of the video and actually being able to understand what you're pointing to due to having learned from the earlier examples is very gratifying lmao. my main (non-tactical) takeaway: maresca will lose some tactic battles (as in, pre-game tactics) -- but our individual quality should be enough to still win games on many of those occasions. we may have tactically lost the first half but that was also when the actual game was won. a possible video idea: on the recent LiB brighton review pod, you compared the game to friday's WSL game against palace--about the off-the-bench quality, iirc. i hadn't realized before that you watch cfcw too, and i think it'd be incredible if you did any sort of tactical analysis on cfcw! with full and unfortunate honestly, i have no idea what sonia's tactics actually are, past the obvious player position switches, and therefore even more have no clue about small (to me lol) details like fofana's half-and-half position. would be fascinating tbh
@@waterthecan thank you so, so much for your lovely reply! Yeah there's just an incredible amount of detail in one sequence let alone 90 minutes of a PL game. This is a 15 minute video packed with JUST the Brighton build up + Wes tweak (I had to leave a few out for the sake of being efficient.) And I love CFCW too haha, I'm watching Sonia's work quite keenly. Perhaps a few games down the line I'll be able to do something on it, once I've seen more of players that haven't played but are expected to be part of her core (OJF, Kerr, etc.) Really appreciate such a detailed reply and I hope you enjoyed the video!
Enzo does the defensive work of Palmer, helps caicedo, break the defence lines of opponents, create assist and people wants him to score. How can one person perform 4 duties on the field
@@kanykristo4084 It's true that you ideally want your attackers to focus on attacking but in the PL now it is simply impossible to function as solely an attacker. Palmer's interceptions and reading are top notch, but his tracking isn't. It will take time. Saka is a reference point in that regard, terrific going both ways and works incredibly hard in every aspect. Palmer a better attacker imo, but Saka better at oop stuff. It's just Palmer's 2nd season though so long way to go
@@cfccentral3 Enzo is quite terrible at duelling in general, gets bypassed too easily whether in his own third or opposition half, wish Lavia had a better fitness record, we're better without Enzo.
Chelsea scored 4 goals but as usual, Sam would highlight only on the negatives.
@@shaibuvictor2984 With all due respect my friend, these aren't negatives. Every PL match between good sides is a chess match, Brighton put us in a tough situation, I'm highlighting how we fixed it. Problem solving isn't a negative at all. I'm not here to breakdown superficial stuff, I'm trying to tell the game's story. This was the narrative for me, and Wes Fofana was the unsung hero behind Palmer.
@@cfccentral3 Ok mate
Top top analysis. Great insight
@@sauravpaul9637 thank you Saurav!
Great analysis bhai, subscribed! Do you think Andrey Santos could come in and play the Enzo role next season? I'm still bullish on Enzo's attacking talents and reading of the game. He just seems to move slower than others which means they are always one step ahead of him when he's defending.
@@dubsthenewdub thank you for watching bhai. And absolutely. when I did the scouting report for Andrey before he arrived, I marked him down as a possible generational talent. He can play as a 6 or 8 comfortably and is far more athletic, defensively solid than Enzo. Enzo of course the better passer and more able on the ball in terms of technical efficiency, but in this system, especially with a passer like Caicedo, I feel he'd be very good
Good work👍
@@Gcaga23 thank you!
Enzo Fernandez is the biggest problem on this squad honestly

Thank you, Sam, you are the best.. On Enzo, I love him, but he needs to work on the defensive side of his game..
@@essaarif1292 thank you for watching! And well on Enzo, he tries, but he's not physically brilliant as such so you have to be mindful of who you match him up with
I'm sure Maresca originally want to keep Gallagher for this very reason. Just think about how much balls Gallagher will win on the final third. It would be massive. Personally I would rather sell Reece than Conor. And unfortunately that's the way the club decides to operate by selling academy players for full profit on the book so they can reinvest more with amortization.
If you watched the match you will know Sanchez caused the two goals not the defender
Top work Sam. This was so enlightening.
