Building an Outdoor Enclosure Start to Finish | MadMaker Reptile
Переглядів 15 тис.4 роки тому
Come join me on this start to finish build of a huge outdoor Reptile enclosure. Watch how I built my 5' X 5' X 8' setup with a heated hide box and a 20 gallon pond. I built this for my Sailfin Dragons and Chinese Water Dragons to use but a setup like this would be great for a variety of arboreal snakes and lizards. thanks for watching!

This is a video that is intended to give you some insight into why your Chinese Water Dragons are swimming down to the bottom of your water container, stuffing their head under something, closing their eyes and drifting off into some kind of trance for a period of time that seems far too long. Don't worry! it's normal and you don't have to rescue them. Check it out... I'll explain more.

    Great job! I may ask a stupid question, but what is the purpose of the plywood sides at the bottom?

    • @madmakerreptile8294
      @madmakerreptile8294 3 роки тому

      Not a stupid question. Thanks for asking it. The plywood skirt around the bottom does several things. It me from hitting the wire mesh with a lawn mower or weed wacker, it creates a visual barrier when the animals are on the ground preventing them from thinking they can just walk out onto the grass and it gives them a greater sense of security when on the ground or in the pond.

    Hi buddy me again lol, Shens new enclosure will be hear soon its just getting made now (when we get his new enclosure we will then be handling him every day as we are moving our whole room around to make this much better for shen) As shen is not use to me handling him often so he puffs up and tries to bite me sometimes, how is the best way of getting him out of his old enclosure and into his new one as i know you should never restrain a water dragon but as our room will be in a mess as we have to move everything about to get the new enclosure in the room i am worried about him getting loose as he could get some where hard for me to get to him just wondering if u have any tips as he is not really tame properly yet. Im not sure how to move him, in a safe way and in a way that won't cause him stress and to make sure he dosent get loose. It will be ok when our room is finished as he can come out of his new enclosure as and when he wants. He will have the whole run of the room which is why we are moving everything to meet his needs.

    • @madmakerreptile8294
      @madmakerreptile8294 3 роки тому

      Okay, since he's not tame, you will have to restrain him. If he were to get loose, that would ultimately be far more stressful than some careful restraint. Your best bet is to put on some gloves and just try to make it quick. Don't try to catch him and put him in something to carry to the new enclosure. That will only make you have to catch him a second time and risk an escape. Don't mess around when you go to catch him. Just quickly grab him. Chasing him around the cage can easily injure him. I have the same situation with my Sailfin Dragons. They are getting better but there's no way I can trust them unrestrained on an enclosure move. Their safety is more important under the circumstances. Your new setup sounds like it will be much easier to work on your relationship with him. My best advice is to start touching him once a day. Just a touch. It's a great place to start and build off of. Good luck! 👊

      No problem at all. Happy to help. I precut all the framing material, assembled and erected it then measured, cut and installed the 1/2" (12mm) plywood. Hopefully that answers your question. Hit me up as much as you need to. 👊

      @madmakerreptile8294 3 роки тому

    • @madmakerreptile8294

    Hi love your set up. Im gunna build new enclosure for my water dragon pretty much the same size as yours just wondering if u can help me what did u use to waterproof the wood? And which sort of wood (plywood, pine, chipboard etc ) is best for this sort of build, thanks

    • @madmakerreptile8294
      @madmakerreptile8294 3 роки тому

      Thanks! I used medium grade plywood and just used acrylic paint to seal it. I like to use fiber glass to line the bottom of the enclosure. You can also use drylock or flex seal liquid. The ultimate would probably be using pvc instead of plywood because there's no need to waterproof it. Way more expensive though so... Hope that helps. Thanks for your comment.
