A very last minute decision to sign on to the Velo 29 Ripon Tour Sportive to commemorate 10 years since the Tour de France departed from Yorkshire. After meeting Jordan on the Coast to coast ride we stayed in touch and got to ride again. This event was a wet one (as usual) and we took on 2 key climbs that the TdF riders did 10 years ago, Buttertubs Pass and Robin Cross Hill. Coast to Coast Ride...

Nice review, I got the Lake MX 238 xc shoe wide 43. I am amazed of the the sung fit from the ball of the fit to the heel and with the nice amount of toe space. How comfortable the shoe felt made me question if it was to big. How much can you wiggle your toes in the Lake shoes.?
In the white ones they are pretty snug inside. The ball of my foot is quite proud on the foot and I also have a small bone piece sticking out on the opposite side. I often get metatarsal discomfort from all footwear these days so should probably seek a medical assessment. I do have these same shoes in black and after a few years of heavy use, they have given to more room inside so I’m happy with both pairs
Helo. Is really wide...??????. My foot is very wide. I wear TOPO ATHLETIC for running.
They’re great for me. It’s worth taking a look at the Lake size guide on the website and draw around your foot with a pencil and paper, then measure the 2 widest points
@theyorkshirewheeler thank You very much
I have a pair in the Leather and just ordered these in white clarino microfiber. hopefully they hold up as well as the leather
@@garysbraccia4980 they seem ok for me so far, I’ve only worn on better weather days but have made a point of wiping them down after each ride. Mainly with a baby wipe
Just ordered one of these in the grey, looks an absolutely stunning bike, love the purple
I’m sure you will love it! Was my first experience of a Tarmac and can’t believe I’ve spent so much time not considering one 😁
If you want to go off road in Yorkshire get a mountain bike
What camera are you using mate?
Hey mate, it’s the DJI Osmo Action 4. The 5 has just recently come out but the difference doesn’t justify an upgrade for me, so you might find some good deals on the 4! 👍
And to follow up, some of my older videos were GoPro Hero 11 but I sold it as they make it difficult and expensive to hook up 3rd party mics and the built in mic is crap. So that’s why I moved over to DJI
@@theyorkshirewheeler Appreciate the response and the vid, mate. Good work.
Thanks mate happy riding 🙌🏻
4 mins in.... Looked real steep! Definitely not getting up that especially with the surface aswell. Some cracking views along rhe way like 👍🏼
Was a similar one like that right near the end up to Southowram! Would love to have a go on these again once the leaves are clear.
looked mega mate 😀
Time to get yourself a gravel bike 😜 quite a few good spots where you are based!
Nice route Matt great vid 👍
Thanks mate, crazy day!!
Great ride! Lots of narrow singletrails 😃
Quite a few tricky parts that day but overall very good!
I bought a Specialized Crux Comp after some research and I'm totally happy with it. Only thing I had to change was the cassette, from 10-45 to 10-51 (40T in the front). There are some decisions one has to take, but most of the learning curve will happen at the beginning. It's difficult to foresee what decisions you would take after your personal learning curve.
That’s a great bike from what I’ve seen around on UA-cam. Hope it’s treating you well and you’re enjoying the gravel scene 🙌🏻
Awesome vid. Curious what size tires you're running on your Giant Advanced, and how they perform for bike-packing. Cheers.
Hey Anne! I’m using the Pirelli Centurato Gravel M 45mm tyres on this bike. The bike did ship with 40mm Cadex tyres but I almost straight away opted for a wider tyre and chunkier tread as the Cadex ones seemed pretty bald. I just put a gravel video up on my channel recently which shows the bike and spec off in a little more detail if you wanted to check it out - thanks 🙌🏻
Some things from my particular niche: consider how much climbing you have in mind and what's in your area, mine came with 10-42 cassette and 40T chainring, which can get rough up steeper climbs especially if you don't want to make every climb above 5-6% an effort. Reason why I'm personally going for a mullet build with an MTB cassette for the custom rebuild of my current Revolt X (2023 edition, the 2024s are all mullet by default afaik) Similarly if you feel like you might want/need a little bit of suspensions consider that when picking a bike. You can fit a Rudy or Fox equivalent on any bike but they're longer than a rigid fork so your geometry changes if the frame wasn't designed around one. There's also redshift stems and maybe carbon handlebars if your hands are the major concern if your bike doesn't come with those already. You can also get some softer ride feel through wider tires or less pressure in tubeless, all really depends on where you intend to go. Tire clearance is also something to look out for, though 45 seems to be the default for newer models.
Some great points there, thanks for sharing in the comments 🙌🏻
Great video, i'm new to the world of gravel rides, I have started researching the right bike for me, it's crazy how much choice there is out there and can be a bit confusing if i'm honest. Which bike are you riding, looks really nice and I like the sound of being comfortable on longish rides?
Hey - thanks for your comment! I know what you mean on that front, are you new to cycling altogether, or just gravel? My bike is the Giant Revolt Advanced 0 with an upgraded wheelset but the CXR2 carbon ones it ships with are still perfectly fine. I opted for this one as it has the luggage mount holes on the forks so I can use it as a bikepacking rig too - that's something to consider if you are looking for more than just gravel riding. I love the bike for it's relaxed geometry which means it's very comfortable for all day rides where body position is concerned. Obviously depending on the gravel surfaces things can still get bumpy and body fatigue sets in so bear this in mind for any bike vs. where you would be intending to ride. Hope that helps but ping some more questions over if you want to!
Thanks for the reply, I’m new to gravel, I’m currently on a Trek dual sport 2 which is ok but I want to take my rides to the next level 😊
Well you are in the right place! I was sceptical and must admit it did take me a while to say I was “enjoying it” but now I’m definitely sold on gravel. Be sure to have a good poke around on komoot to see what gravel is within reach of your local area
Looks like a shocker of a route!!! Not really gravel in my eyes.
I never wanted a MTB so much in my life until that day! 😂
Great prep for Tor Divide 😂
Some suspension in my neck and spine would be nice😂
Can’t think of anything worse
Great pace mate. Although you’ve had a later start, you still managed to get back by midday? I had a 6am start and got to the bridge by 12. Great video’ 😊
Also, forgot to say, we’ve had absolute zero crashes on my way at that early slot, which is why it’s always best to choose the quickest planned finishing time (3.5-4.00h.) 😅
Was a top day out wasn’t it! Shame it’s not on for 2025, I’ll have to find some other events to keep an eye out for
Wessenden Head in horizontal rain - I'm getting flashbacks to my youth
It was the first time there for me but I feel its like that all year round 😂
Great video and effort mate, day 2 just looked absolutely horrendous!!!!
Thanks mate. The bad weather kept our sportive dream alive, was just missing you there to get soaked too 😂
Looked a tough couple days on the bike! Maybe more suited to a hard tail MTB? Looked like a few rough parts on it.
Certainly was! My brain had never rattled so much before. Bet it’s a doddle on a mountain bike 😵💫
@@theyorkshirewheeler haha all fun and games as they say 🫣. Cracking effort considering the conditions and terrain
@@neilgreenfield6414 time to get yer sen a gravel bike 😝
Great vid, it was a tough one. Good to meet you at the shop on day 1 - headwinds were a killer
Likewise mate, each day was challenging in different ways. Would love to do it all over again mind
Looks epic mate. Well done bud.
Thanks mate it’s one to remember!
Great vid. Ive done 1 of the rides these guys do. Lovely fella, but ghry are definitely NOT gravel rides. Nothing like it. There MTB routes
Cheers Mark. Yeah was a mixed bag when it came to surface type I must say! My mate who did the MTB route said it was much different to what I experienced. I really could have done with suspension 😆
Great effort, the weather looked brutal, we experienced the same in Wales
I think we need to petition for more gravel events in summer although that’s still taking a gamble 😂
What’s comfortability like? I need to head to the store because I’m 6ft 2 and not sure whether I am supposed to get large as I sit on the cusp between L and XL
It’s fairly aggressive so be sure you’re ok with that based on your body’s flexibility and length of rides you’ll be doing. Defo sit on a jig in store if you can, they sized up my size and handlebar dimensions bang on. I’m on a small frame as only 173cm 😆
Well played! I did the opposite the other week from Whitby to Whitehaven, Wrynose destroyed me after all those hours but I found Hardknott much easier East to West..took the Ribble 653 steely with an 8 speed cassette..never again. Hope to do the same route as you in spring, with the R5 this time..
That’s some going well done pal. I’m so glad I took an 11-34 for that event as it helped massively!
@@theyorkshirewheeler Cheers! I hit Wrynose at 9pm, 1.5hr behind schedule due to a flat and wisely decided to buy a new tyre in Hawes..it’s something else Wrynose and Hardknott in the pitch black! I recommend it 👍 Happy cycling pal
machine .. well done up Hardknott
Thanks mate!
I pre booked a car park a couple of miles from the start, just outside the congestion zone. Found it on Parkopedia. I was in Pink B (the last group) but found it too slow and spent all day trying to get past very thick traffic, including a lot of riders who had delayed their start because of the rain and two very long jams for accidents. Fantastic day! I’ll be back next year but aim for an earlier start. Thanks for the video, it really caught the atmosphere.
Thanks for the comment! Good tip on the parking option, definitely one to consider for next year as it was a pain for us getting a train in from the outskirts. Sure hope it's dry for 2025 for a better experience, and less punctures for the inner tube gang 😆
🔥🔥🔥
Assuming gears like 36-32 or 34-30, and assuming the rider is relatively fresh at the bottom (ie not after 90 miles 10000ft like the Fred or the struggle), my order of difficulty are hard knot, wrynose (from langdale), Dunn fell, bwlch y groes, trooper lane, asterton bank, chimney. If you had say 39-26 gears like back in the day, it would be a different order based on gradient ie chimney would be 2nd after hardknott. Many chains were snapped back in the day but the gears take the edge off them all now. As for latest 1-1 ratios: no challenge on any of em, unless you are well heavy.
👌👌👌
Custard ice-cream seems too nice to miss. I might visit York again for that very treat!
Highly recommend it on a hot day! When the temperatures soon drop I will be opting for the warm dessert options they have, win win!
Cracking ride out mate. Really enjoyed it. Brilliant video mate
Top day mate looking forward to the next!
The cruising section is 10% average I think this and Rosedale are comparably horrendous but this takes the cake.
The cruising section on Hardknott is a lovely little relief before it starts going up and up again further along 😂 did Rosedale a couple years ago and remember zig zagging that big drag at the top 😬
Well done!! Thats a first for Velo29 to do an unmanned feed stop, ive never had that before. But Velo29 do an outstanding job of high quality events throughout the year. My aim is too do all of them over a few years. Ive got about 15 still left to do 😀
Was a first Velo29 for me, well organised and informed - impressed! I might be doing their other Yorkshire one coming up soon and the Silverstone one looks like an experience that shouldn’t missed!
Very well done and a great video! On Saturday I did a C2C2C audax, 305km total. Creswell to Bowness on Solway and back. I found it hard! I came in last in 18 hours total. I had lots of breaks and was somewhat slower than you My rear end was very raw too! Take care and keep pedalling 😂
Well done mate, that’s a mental achievement you should be proud 💪🏻 hope the recovery and backside repair is going ok 😆
The Yorkshire Dales still looks amazing in grim weather! Was that last feed station just a couple boxes of high 5 and a barrel of water? 😂
Most definitely! I do moan about the cold a lot but the Dales on a hot day is brutal! I think it was feed 3 or 4 which was unmanned then the final one was part a of loop covering the 1st feed of the day 😁
Quality video 💪👍🚴♂️ Looking forward to the next ride out !!
Thanks mate can’t wait for the next one!
id be able to do this easyyyy with my eyes closed ...( while asleep dreaming ) 🤣....well done mate 👍...think id die if i tried that lol
haha thanks so much mate, appreciated! It's a tough climb but don't let that put you off, just keep spinning and DON'T STOP 🤣
@@theyorkshirewheeler your welcome mate...ive just got into cycling and got my first bike since a younger lad really anxious about alot of things 😅... ill get there 1 day lol...and yeah DONT STOP 👍...keep up the good work and keep on inspiring people take care mate
@@DeanKelz great to hear! I’ve only been into cycling a few years myself and started from scratch like most of us. Always here if you want any tips and just enjoy every pedal stroke 😁
Well done lad
Thanks pal
Wow amazing
Thanks 🤩
177 bpm whilst riding 21% gradient 😮 mine would be 1770 bpm
😂 think I hit my max at one point which is around 183-185
I think Rosedale Chimney is harder. It's shorter but it's very steep from start to finish.
Definitely a tough one that. I did that and glaisdale horror on a struggle event a while back. Maybe I should do a ‘my top 10 hardest climbs’ video 😄
I did both Hardknotts and Wrynose pass, east to west in 1991 on a fully loaded camping touring bike, I had a low gear of 25" and there was no chance of stopping on the very steep parts or I would have fallen over..
I love hearing people's Hardknott stories it's the climb that has so much to offer for various reasons 😀
YEEEEESSS!
🥳
Well done! That was a mountain bike ride! If this is any help.... I find that if I get lower back pain, it's my cue to drink more water, and stand up out of my seat more often.
Thanks mate, could well be that. I don’t think my body likes the rough stuff so much! Have recently been putting some extra leg and core work in at the gym which has helped massively on long road rides so will see how the next glorious gravel event goes depending on the terrain. Just did the Velo 29 Ripon Tour de France anniversary ride today, video up in a couple days time 😁
Ay up! Well done on your big ride, especially not getting off at that 33 percent section! Harknott and Wrynose are a test of brute strength. Many years ago I got up both, going both ways without stopping. Last year I couldn't do that and had to stop quite a few times. I'm training and getting stronger though, so may try again this year. I think you would like a ride I did recently, which was a massive loop around Great Dun Fell, including going up it! I did a video of it. All the best from a fellow Yorkshireman :)
I haven’t done the other way yet, it sure is a sketchy descent I’ll say that! I need to get back over there and do Wrynose the official top 100 direction still
I don’t think hardknott is that hard. It’s all about the start and the middle 30% section of 30 metres. Between those and the top it’s a steady ride. Honister for me is way harder
Yeah tbh I don’t see why so many claim it’s the hardest, it is hard but is perfectly doable for most. I haven’t done Honister yet but have seen a few claim it’s definitely in their top 5 hardest
Have you tried trooper lane in Halifax @theyorkshirewheeler
@@markhall6026yeah still haven’t done it, I’m not actually too far from there at all. Wanted to do the Ronde van Calderdale but couldn’t make it this year. I’ve got a little route planned to tick off Trooper Lane, Shibden Wall & Ploughcroft Lane from the Top 100 and Yorkshire expansion pack. Just need to get over that way and make the ride more worthwhile. Have you done it?
