The Antique Airshow
Australia
Приєднався 21 гру 2018
Hi, I'm Jarryd, the creator of Antique Airshow. Welcome to the Antique Airshow where we fly through aviation history to uncover the stories of the pilots and aircraft of yesteryears.
Since a little boy, I've been fascinated by powered flight. Watching the 1969 classic movie,' The Battle of Britain', as a 6-year-old captivated my imagination. Ever since my passion for historic aircraft and aviation in general has only grown. Now into my early twenties, I spend significant time reading and investigating these topics and it has turned from an interest into a true passion.
The Antique Airshow was set up in an effort to share to as many people as possible the facts of both famous and lesser-known aircraft and their related stories .The videos are purposely kept to short, so that people don't have to sit down and watch a full feature documentary, instead being able to watch and learn on the go.
So subscribe, strap in and join me on this exciting journey.

The Aircraft of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Breakdown! - Planes of Hollywood #3
🛩️ About This Video:
Ever wonder what aircraft were actually shown in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? Why where they there and what are their history? Well wonder no more as I dive deep into the fast pace, action-packed adventure of the Last Crusade and uncover the story behind the five aircraft that appears in the film! Learn about the Stampe et Vertongen SV-4, the Pilatus P-2 and the Zeppelin while taking a look at how Steven Spielberg worked all of them brilliantly into the story of the Last Crusade.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade marks the third entry into the franchise that began with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Released in 1989, the film would focus on the strained relationship between Indiana Jones (played once again by Harrison Ford) and his father Henry Jones Sr (played by Sean Connery). The movie itself is set in 1938, with Indiana Jones setting on a’ quest to find his father, a holy grail scholar who had been kidnapped by the Nazi’s to aid their search for the grail. Spielberg, having signed on for three movies when originally creating Raiders would also return to direct. The film was highly successful earning over $479 million at the international box office, making it the highest grossing film of 1989 and would win the Oscar for Best Sound Effects Editing at the 62nd Academy Awards. In terms of aircraft, the film has not a heap, but a few. And perhaps importantly it has one of the best aerial sequences in the whole franchise.

The Bristol Blenheim 0:55. I always recognise it by the patio doors on the front.

That was edited in for this video. Even though it is for historical and research purposes, you never know with UA-cam. Just playing it safe.
Maybe give subtitles to your videos if you're gonna play so damn loud
I'm sorry the P2 does not look anything like any german fighter of WW2.
No American audience will ever notice, except for American WW2 bomber pilots, for the movie it just looked old enough in 1988. Greetings from Berlin 😅👍
@@l4d1k06 lol what your talking to two americans that noticed
@@l4d1k06 Sorry grew up in Illinois USA and it never did look like a 109 or 190 even when I saw The Longest Day on the big screen.
It may not look overly similar to the Bf-109, but the P-2 did in fact use part from the BF-109. The tailwheel, parts of the canopy and the main undercarriage and fairing were all borrowed from the Me-109s of the Swiss Air Force. I think the P-2 does a good job of filling a generic German fighter plane
Where have You been hiding ? Your still on My Subscriptions list , but this is the first notification I've had in ages . Glad Your back though . Thanks for this episode key climbing and climb high . Catch You next time .
That is odd. At least the notification worked for this one. Thank you, more videos on their way 👍✈️
Cool channel mate, keen to see it grow
Thank you 👍✈️
Blackburn seemed to take pride in creating aircraft that should scare the pilots who would have to fly them. In addition to the already mentioned Blackburn Blackburn, it would include: - Blackburn AD Scout - Blackburn Sidecar
It does seem that way. Yes those two are very, lets say, unique designs 👍✈️
I hardly think it's forgotten. A very well known aircraft.
I just noticed, it’s quite long.
I've actually seen the Stampe SV.4c and Pilatus P-2 that they used in the film. The Stampe was later used in the filming of The Mummy, and the Pilatus was later badly damaged in a forced landing.
Nice that would have been cool to seen. Not too long ago the replica of the Stampe they built for bluescreen work went for sale at an auction 👍✈️
@@AntiqueAirshow the museum where I saw the Stampe and the Pilatus had the mock-up fuselage that they used for the tunnel scene standing outside the hangar for years. Dunno what happened to it.
My uncle was a pilot on a Halifax LW466 MH-H based at 51 squ. RAF Snaith. They were shot down in January 1944,they all died and are now buried in the British cemetery near Berlin. I have a picture of him but would have loved one with the crew and the plane 😢
"The flying coffin" - Not one single one remains in tact, and so many of these crashed. My grandfathers twin brother Tom Timms died in one of these 21/10/1943 at Manor Farm, Purton, Gloucestershire, aged 22. Dreadful aircraft and not fit for purpose. I tracked down a witness who was a farm hand when the plane came down. He is late 90's now and he had kept the tail wheel for over 70 years which he gave me through tear filled eyes.
I'm an employee of the Piper Aviation Museum in Lock Haven, Pa. We are the home of Piper Aircraft. We have a L4 Grasshopper on display here. Piper built a total of 75000 airplanes here in Lock Haven. The museum is located in the former engineering building.
Great video. Thanks for researching the information and compiling and editing the information. Cheers
Thank you👍✈
Fly, Yeah... Land, No. WOW! The guy landed on a taxi way at one of the busiest airports in the world! And he didn't even loose his ticket... How prophetic.
12:27 "..action packed..." Huh! They're both just standing....with Indy looking for a loophole!! 😛
2:51 "Even though Zeppelins were never built to carry other aircraft." USS Akron having a small hanger capable of carrying 5 biplanes onboard: 👁👄👁 (jokes asides great video!)
Yep, whoopsie. I was more using the term Zeppelin to refer to those built and used in Germany. I now realize that it can be a much more general term used for rigid airships. Thank you 👍✈️
Last Crusade is an amazing film! It is a pity that they never made any more Indiana Jones films after it was released, to be fair anything made more recently wouldn't have been as good....just imagine they may even of had Aliens and a CGI Indy shudder!
It sure is a great film. I think it caps off the original trilogy really well.
@@AntiqueAirshow "Original trilogy"? You appear confused! No more Indiana Jones Movies were made after Last Crusade.
Planes of hollywood films or shows live action or animation Well I like to mention uss Indianapolis men of courage the film has lot of inaccuracies but there are planes were seen in the films the kamikaze scene in opening of the film shows cgi zero hitting ships bow in real life it was Ki-43 that hit that hit the ship stern. Later before Indianapolis sinking in San Francisco scene there was cgi p-51 mustange which flyby the ship swooping way to close to ships bow which is unrealistic so I recreated in war thunder just to show differently. After the Indianapolis sinking 5 days later anti sub planes were shown little until PBY Catalina which they real plane and cgi but the plane was damaged landing on water and scrapped. I think better way to avoid damage they should have let the plane float in water for rescue and miniature model for landing shots instead of cgi. There is a good uss Indianapolis film called mission of the sharks the suppose PBY Catalina isn't Catalina its Grumman HU-16 Albatross 1949 float plane probably for some reasons but the film did better than Men of courage.
That is interesting. I have not come across either before so may have to take a look 👍✈
There are real WW2 German aircraft that resamblence SV-4 and P-2 , Bucker Bu-131 and Arado Ar-96
Yes they certainly do. The P-2 also utilized parts of the Bf 109 so has some similarities to that as well.
The idea for the zeppelin carrying aircraft likely came from the Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk, which is one sexy looking airplane.
Quite possibly. It is a pretty cool aircraft 👍✈
Another thing to note is the gun on the biplane used by Henry Jones Sr. This is a mock up of a Villar perosa. A reallife gun designed and used during ww1 by the Italian military. It was a twin barrel machine gun that fired a pistol cartridge, something unusual for the time period. It was quickly discovered that this design wasn't really useful as an anti aircraft gun as the pistol cartridge was way underpowered, so production was discontinued. However many found there way towards the frontlines. Here the were fitted with simple buttstocks and used by soldiers. Incidentally becoming the first sub machine gun. Very few real Villar perosa's survive, almost all are in collections of museums. However a company in Hollywood made a blank fire mock up sometime in the 1980s. It appears in The Sicilian, Batman 89 and this movie. But this movie is the only one were its used as an aircraft gun.
That is really interesting and something I was not aware. Thanks for sharing 👍✈
"Jhonny I hardly knew you" playing in the background had me tripping.
"there were never any aircraft mounted on zeppelins". The Akron and Macon both want a word with you. Both had up to 5 fighters on them. Yes, they were US dirigibles but that's still a ridged frame are ship
Yes that is very true. I was using Zeppelin to refer those built and used by Germany but can understand that the term better applies to all rigid frame airships. Perhaps my wording could have been better.
@AntiqueAirshow >>> Great video...👍
Thank you 👍✈
@@AntiqueAirshow>>> You're Welcome.
3:36: “In 1928, the new Graf Zeppelin was launched”. That would be LZ-127, the Graf Zeppelin. The LZ-130, named the “New Graf Zeppelin” was identical to the Hindenburg and operated for two years AFTER the Hindenburg burned. I realize what you meant to say, but considering there was a “Graf Zeppelin” AND a “New Graf Zeppelin”, your phrasing is confusing. Note that the scenic bay windows on the “Raiders” Zeppelin were copied directly from the Hindenburg and New Graf Zeppelin.
Thank you for clarifying. I can see how this would be very confusing. 👍✈️
I really liked this fine Planes of Hollywood #3.....Thank you...... Old F-4 Phantom pilot Shoe🇺🇸
Thank you, great to hear. I'm going to try and make this series a regular on the channel👍✈
Rest in peace, Sir Sean Connery who played Henry Jones Sr
He was terrific in this film
You should cover Capricorn 1, lots of great planes in that 70s gem! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capricorn_One
I haven't heard of that one before, I'll have to check it out. I do hope to make this series a bit of regular on the channel with different tv shows and movies. Thanks for the recommendation 👍✈️
I've been waiting a long time for this video!!!!!!!!
It took me a while but I finally got here 👍✈️
And for years, I thought that the biplane they escape in was a tiger moth 😅
So did I ...
stampe has rounded wing tips, is larger and has a deeper fuselage, also no wooden struts, all metal
Interestingly the Tiger Moth and the SV.4 were built on the need for a plane with better front seat access
It definitely looks similar. How many other biplanes have swept wings? There's this, the Tiger Moth, and the Bücker Jungmann (which could be what the plane in the movie is meant to portray). There's also the much more recent Aviasud Mistral, which has _forward_ swept wings, because France just has to do things differently.
This would have been LEGO's best set of the year if only they had provided livery options for BA and Air France, instead of what they opted for.
Definitely would have been nice to get those liveries. I however do like the one they did, and it does match very closely to the prototype liveries 👍✈️
Looks like the illegitimate offspring of a DH Mosquito and an He111.
It's sexy plane no doubt (sounds like engine games played)?
As a 2nd comment , my Dad tells me that his brother ( Leo ) had the fastest flying time from Amberley ( Qld ) to Pearce W.A. & return , I hope that this assists your knowledge base.
That is very interesting. A cool record no doubt to have had.
Thank you so very much on your great video on the mighty Lincoln aircraft ; my Dad's oldest brother ( My uncle Leo ) was the pilot of A73-44 & was based out of Amberley Qld & sadly one miserable day in March 1950 he & his crew all lost their lives when the plane suddenly fell from the sky over Rosewood for no apparent reason & the eventual findings were kept "hush - hush" by the R.A.A.F. for many years after that but we've been told in recent years that something from inside the plane caused my uncle to loose control of the plane but I guess that we'll never know for sure??? ; Do keep up your great work!!
That is sad to read. Brave men flying some of the most advance aircraft of the time. RIP., Lest we forget. Thanks, will do 👍✈
I live in the Town these aircraft were built, and 30 minutes ago I was driving down Lysander road, named after this aircraft.
That slide-valve radial engine sound was unmistakable. The sacrifice by those young warriors added up to victory which hopefully will never be forgotten. We must stop the inexorable march of socialism and evil which very nearly won out in the 1940s and continues to do so today. Observe the decline of Great Britain and America since. Wake up good people. Please.
I had to turn on the subtitles.
Still a very cool looking aircraft imo.
Had piston engined fighters continued this looks to me to be what the P-51 would have come to be.
Shame it won't fly.
The guns from Von Richthofen's triplane have been lost to the sands of time. They are in fact NOT in the Imperial War Museum. No one knows what became of them. Things that do exist in museums are the seat, the engine, the control column, the baron's fur boots and bits of fabric from the plane.
I listened to an interview (on UA-cam) with an RAF veteran bomber command pilot (he was in his 90’s when interviewed). This man had flown the Hadley Page Halifax equipped with air cooled Bristol Hercules engines. When asked by the interviewer if he regretted not having served with Lancasters he replied, “certainly not, we loved our Halifaxes”. The old pilot then went on to explain some of the shortcomings of the Lancaster. RAF post WW2 statistics found that only 15% of bailouts were successful from the Lancaster while a 25% success rate was achieved by the Halifax (the US B17 achieved a 50% bailout success rate). The old pilot said that bomber crews were aware of the poor chances of surviving a bailout from a Lancaster. He then told the story of a return trip from a mission where his aircraft had been hit causing one engine to falter for a minute or two. His aircraft made a successful return to base where upon the crew disembarked to find that one cylinder had been completely shot off one of the Bristol engines (but it still kept going), he noted that similar damage inflicted on a liquid cooled Merlin engine would have quickly resulted in total engine failure due to the loss of coolant. As an aside, I don’t know how many are aware that RAF post WW2 statistics found that fully 50% of all aircrew loses during the WW2 conflict were due to accidents “unrelated to enemy action”. Pierre Closterman in his book ‘The Big Show’ when remarking on the high rate of fatal accidents in the squadrons he served in pointed to the young age of the pilots and quipped that “high octane av-gas and testosterone were a lethal mixture”. After listening to interviews with Australian WW2 veteran pilots I figure the stats were probably similar in the RAAF during the period. I have heard veterans remark that they knew the accident rate was bad but were unaware that it was that bad.
That is incredibly interesting to read. I recently attended a talk from an Australian historian exploring training casualties in the RAAF during WW2 and it was very fascinating to hear. Something that doesn't perhaps get as much attention as it should.
@@AntiqueAirshow There was a talk given at the Australian War memorial recently (last few years) by a WW2 RAAF pilot who flew Beaufort Bombers in the Pacific. Thankfully there was an ABC journalist present who was so shocked to learn of the "training casualties' that he went on to interview the old pilot and that interview was broadcast on the ABC. If you can find the interview it is well worth listening to.
Awesome!
Thanks 👍😀
