Elegance in the skies: The Lockheed Constellation

  • The Lockheed Constellation is perhaps one of the most elegant airliners to have ever flown. When Howard Hughes bought into TWA in the late 1930s he sought a new airliner that could fly further, and faster than anything before it to give TWA the advantage in the market. He approached Lockheed, who accepted the challenge. Hughes not wanting to give up the advantage ensured that all design work was kept secret and it wasn't until late 1941 when the project finally was revealed to the public and other airlines. America's entry into the Second World War in December 1941, however, meant that all orders were quickly taken over by the U.S military and as it was not a top priority project, work on the Constellation program significantly slowed down. It wouldn't be until 1943 that the prototype finally flew, but still when the war finished in 1945 only 15 had been delivered to the U.S military. Post-war the Constellation proved to be a massive hit with airlines all across the globe. Its was fast and also had pressurization, one of the few airlines at the time to have so. This allowed it to fly higher, where conditions tended to be smoother, creating a more pleasant and safer experience for passengers. Upgrades continued and for the next decade Constellations would provide vital and important services for airlines around the world. The U.S Air Force even showed renewed interest in the design placing orders in 1948 for machine under a new designation of C-121.

Pressurized cabin for the 1940s ... wow !

Yeah it was very advanced for its time. If TWA could have gotten exclusive use of the type, they would have had a big advantage over competitors.

I greatly enjoyed this video on the Constellation. When I was a little pup, I would see many a Connie flying overhead...I lived between LaGuardia and JFK airports....alas I did not appreciate it at the time. I await the next part of the Connie story. Thanks for the posting.

Thanks, glad to hear. That would have been a fascinating sight to see. Living between the two airports, I could imagine you would have had many interesting types flying overhead. Hopefully the next part won't be too far away 👍✈️

Except for the overhead noise, that must have been a great place to grow up.

I may not be able to tell you what I had for breakfast, but I do recall being on the observation deck at Chicago's Midway Airport at age three in 1961 and witnessing for the first-time numerous gloss white TWA Constellations and Super Constellations on the Midway tarmac. Great history of the Lockheed Constellation as you really got the facts straight on this iconic propeller airliner. Thanks for sharing!

It has definitely been too long, but its great to be back. I've had a lot going on the past few months, so progress on videos has definitely stalled. However things are starting to settle down, and I'm hoping this will kick start things for the second half of the year. I have some cool and different videos I want to try, so stay tune over the next few months 👍✈️

Very interesting and in depth video , when I was a child I had some wall paper on My bedroom wall with several different aircraft depicted , one of them was a Constellation , I don't know which variant it was but I can remember looking at all those wonderful planes and imagining what it must be like to be either aboard or actually flying in one of them . Thanks , Catch You next time . Stay Safe.

Thanks 👍✈️ That is cool, sounds a very interesting poster. I'm the same, I do really wonder what it would have been like to fly on these aircraft. The photos and videos make it look quite glamourous compared to today, but I wonder what it really was like. See you then, and likewise 👍✈️

@@AntiqueAirshow Just looking up at the sky and seeing a con trail would have Me wondering guessing what that plane was ,where it was going , how many people there were on board and thinking how glamorous it must be . Oh the innocence of youth.

Enjoying your channel. Hope you get to do videos on the Avro Vulcan (sexiest bomber ever built) and the Beechcraft Model 17 (Staggerwing). Never knew the reason for the Constellations' triple tails before!

Thats great to hear. I hadn't developed any plans yet to do those two aircraft, but I'll add them to the list and see how things go.
