Soaring wave lift only three miles from home!
Today I decided to explore the ridge south of Berwick, PA. It was around 8 AM, the wind was from the south-southwest at around 18 knots. I found some surprise lift on the DOWNwind side of the ridge, above I-80. Clouds were forming over the ridge, dipping down and disappearing, then re-forming in a line to the north. They disappeared again and formed an additional line even further north but the best lift was between the first and second line of clouds. (You can see the three lines of clouds in the video thumbnail image which form the tops of the ripples where the air reaches the water condensation level.) I had read about wave lift before but never encountered it until now. I had always believed this phenomenon only occurred around really tall mountain ranges but I saw it happening right here at home! It was really exciting because I was able to soar with my engine completely turned off for close to an hour and maintain altitude around 2500 FT MSL only 3 miles from my house. I love this sport! Wave lift is similar to surfing the downstream ripples formed by water flowing over an object in river rapids. In this case the air flow over a ridge oscillates up and down a couple of times before settling out. If you have a glider you can ride one of the downstream ripples without using an engine for thrust. Sorry for the bad audio, I didn't have the GoPro and Sena Bluetooth audio pack up this time, just used my cell phone to capture the moment.

Sena Headset and GoPro Slow Mo Test
Переглядів 2968 років тому
Just trying out some new comm and camera equipment. Hoping to make my own (Powered) Paragliding Vlog someday. This was my first flying test of the Sena Bluetooth Pack for GoPro. It works decently with my open-face helmet. But I would like to cut out more motor noise at full throttle. You can still understand my speech without me raising my voice but you have to listen closely. I might eventuall...
.223 Varmint Round Explodes Soda Can
Переглядів 1198 років тому
My brother brought over his AR-15 and we tested one of his new varmint rounds on a can of orange soda from Aldi (all natural flavor and no food coloring). The results were so impressive that we did it again while recording with my GoPro Hero4 which does 240 frames/second at 720P. This is that video slowed down in the GoPro Studio software. I'm not sure exactly why we placed the apple on top of ...
Flat Top and GoPro Testing and First Flight
Переглядів 3099 років тому
I decided to do a test of my new GoPro 4K-capable camera (the Hero4 Black edition) while also doing my first real run-up and hands on test of my (almost new) Flat Top paramotor. This is a serious upgrade to my previous camera AND flying equipment. I wasn't sure where I'd go with this test but it ended up being my first flight on this paramotor. I thought I'd at least do some power taxiing aroun...
Paragliding Avondale Strip Mine
Переглядів 17511 років тому
I started exploring the site of an old anthracite strip mine (The Avondale mine) in Plymouth, PA not far from home. Started mountain biking there but got the crazy idea to try some paragliding down the slope. This was obviously not too safe since I'm not that experienced (notice the oscillations), I don't have an actual paragliding free-flight harness (yet) and there was a pretty good cross-win...

My First PPG Flight to 7000 FT
Переглядів 2,5 тис.11 років тому
This is my return to Powered Paragliding (PPG) video. A milestone flight for me because it was the first long flight I've done in the last 2 years and it was the first one taking off from my very own property where I moved in March. Although I wasn't setting out to break my previous altitude record, I decided to climb until I ran out of gas. Only started with 7.5 liters in the 11 liter tank and...

I look things over after landing back in the field I took off from and do a post-flight review. Having an engine fail in flight is never an emergency situation with this activity because I always fly places where I can land nicely in such an event. In this case, I was so high up and wind conditions were such that I could easily glide back to the field I took off from.

Gliding Down From 5000+ Feet After Engine Quits
Переглядів 8 тис.13 років тому
After the engine quit and I couldn't get it restarted in the air, I had about 20 minutes of glide time to reach the ground. This is just showing part of that glide. It is quieter than with the motor running, but there is still wind noise, especially since I didn't know the proper place to hold the camera. I'll work on that in the future, or get a camera better suited for such conditions. Having...

Thanks! I haven't been doing much flying lately, and only went up like 3 times last year. I moved away from that house and now live in town so I have to take my gear to the airport which isn't usually an option with my work and family schedule now. I'm hoping to get back into it more later this year. That battery pack was an old Anker Astro E1 5200mAh power bank that I stuck on with Velcro.

Can a quad glide safely with an engine out ?

    • @johnlewallen9008
      @johnlewallen9008 6 років тому

Nathan .Star Yes in this area it would be. (Unless you are talking about a powered parachute quad.) If it has the same paraglider wing then the glide ratio should be very similar but the speed would be a bit faster due to the higher weight. Also since you have wheels it takes a bit further to roll to a stop and you would want to select a smoother landing surface with short or no grass and no ruts which could cause the quad to flip over. Just make sure you always fly within gliding distance to a safe landing spot for the equipment you are using. Even if the quad flips over it wouldn't be very life-threatening (except in water) due to the generally low landing speeds and additional protective frame around the pilot. In rural farmland areas there should plenty of safe landing spots for quads and foot-launch alike.

Grew up on that mountain, we were the next to the last house. Walked up to the fire tower many times growing up, took a lot of short cuts, it was quite a hike. My Mom would point out all the different flowers and trees on the way. The view from the top is beautiful even if you don't climb the tower. You can see for miles. Took my kids up there a few times. Some of the best times.

I have a picture of that firetower your standing in. I was in Council Cup. I was directly across from the Power Plant in Salem township. Its a good 15 miles away and the fire tower stands out clear as day. I hope to get a picture from the Tilbury Knob which is another 15 miles in the other direction. I'll post that one as well. Have a look at the link to check out the picture. www.flickr.com/photos/krishaas2012/

Nice video John. I live only a couple hours from you. I am surprised I hadn't run across your videos before now. Where did you get your training and how did you end up with a flattop? I fly with a Simonini because I feel like it is quieter than most other models. I agree with ElkMagic's comments about the Sena for Live Communications. Check out some videos from James Allred. His Sena setup is superb. Hope you are still getting some airtime!

Definitely not ideal! That is a ground handling/training harness with upgraded carabiners. I was only experimenting in free flight at this point (normally, I fly a paramotor with its own built-in harness). I have since purchased an Ozone Oxygen harness to play around with but haven't had a chance to go back here with it.

A tiny piece of tape over the microphone of the camera makes all the difference. As far as everyone that comments on losing an engine, it really is NO BIG DEAL. This guy demonstrates how safe it is.

    • @TheMidnightScientist

+mikemac17565 Thanks for the tip on covering the mic. I'll try that in the future. True, an engine-out is no big deal. Sometimes I shutoff the motor way up and see if I can glide back to my LZ for fun. Just make sure to always fly over landable terrain (which is easy in this sport)!

I was close... just had the machine running today with the new carb and electrical system for testing and tuning but found additional exhaust cracks that must be repaired. So I'll be taking it all apart again tomorrow. That's great to have someone else interested around here. I'll contact you via email.
