In May 2001, MBARI geologists were using a remotely operated vehicle (a tethered robotic submarine) to explore the seafloor off Oahu, Hawaii when they came upon this amazing squid. They estimated the animal to be between four and six meters (13-20 feet) long. After just a few minutes, the squid swam off at high speed. For more information, see the MBARI news release: www.mbari.org/news/news_rel...

Siphonophores - Fascinating "alien" (but actually naturally occurring) sea creatures. Dr. Phil Pugh talks about studying jellyfish that cannot be collected in nets, and about his first times seeing live ones. These jellyfish are called siphonophores. From a contemporary review of SJH by George Starostin: "Not only do they not make men like these any more, but they really didn’t make that much of them in the mid-20th century either. Indeed, what kind of music would you expect from an African-American born in Cleveland, adopted and raised by Blackfoot Indians, who studied classical piano and blues guitar, wanted to become an opera singer, but instead became the middleweight boxing champion in the state of Alaska, and opened his performances jumping out of a coffin in a leopard-skin costume?" What a life! And this was only the beginning.

It seems to me that this is such sarcasm, a personal look at love, he felt it this way and conveyed these feelings to us, it’s so real, who really loved will understand, and who loved, but they didn’t love him, he knew for a long time

Gidday from Melbourne, Down Under... have a look at this video I filmed in 2002, East coast Australia - a real life Siphonophore I found while diving the shallows at the local Wharf dive site. The night before had seen a huge lightning storm which whipped up large seas and I'm guessing, brought in some other deep sea creatures into the shallow waters. My film was shot with the older 4:3 format Mini DV, which is unfortunately lower resolution than what we can now get from an HD camera, or even a GoPro. Enjoy my video......
