Scary situation — ATC and overwhelmed pilot in busy Houston airspace
Come fly with me as I take the Vans RV-7a from Austin to Sugar Land, near Houston. Along the way, we listen in to ATC (air traffic control) trying to communicate with a pilot who appears to be in over his head.

And this is why the Avg Joe Dreamer can NEVER accomplish their dream!
This has been my experience with owning airplanes. 1. If you can't afford to pay cash for 2 of whatever you are looking at then you can't afford to buy the 1 2. 10-15% of purchase price the first year on misc shtuf making it your plane. 3. 10-15% of purchase price per year to fly it 4. Be ready for a $20k-$100k bill, depending on type, at any moment.
Very informative, thanks for posting.
What do we know about the Malibu Aerospace seat extender STC?
Also, location of fuel is important to know especially at small airports.
So if you fly to another place for 3 days, do you pay additionally for plane “parking”?
Gracias por la información tan valiosa y útil. Me da referencias para la búsqueda y comparaciones que estoy realizando. Saludos desde Argentina 🤙🏻
Cool! I live a few miles away in League City, TX!
i fly out of DWH in NW Houston and hear someone like that other plane more than we should. tons of students in the air on the west side of town
Hey, Have enjoyed your content. Understood from another video that you parted ways for the time being from flying Malibu? Am exploring purchasing one. Would very much like to get thoughts from you, both (+)s & (-)s. Possible we can connect over emails/texts?
Omg im so glad you posted it. That's my dream to be able to fly to Leon but not for san miguel but 20ish minutes north
How much does an airplane cost to own and operate? As much as you have, and allot that you don't.
KDTS”Kilo Delta TACO Sierra” I spit out my coffee!! Hilarious
No way you will spend more on insurance than on annuals over time. Just not happening. At least not for any annual you would want to fly your family on.
So what year and model??? Really dude.
The prop is spinning so slowly ha ha ha ha ha Easier just to file IFR when going into Houston airspace
Great video mate! How about doing an updated one after 2 years? I would love to see what changed
Still cheaper than a divorce…
That is more than just task saturated.
ATC is a turd in my opinion
That's Houston. It's a packed airspace, with IAH, HOU, Ellington, Galveston, and a whole bunch of other small airports with tons of GA traffic. What I heard on this video is what I hear every time I request flight following. The ATC guys can be harsh, but in their defense they have a lot going on to try to manage.
And that’s why you have an instrument rating and file IFR. So much easier and less stressful
That’s pretty cool how the number are the exact same as my Cherokee 6. My Aerostar isn’t that far off either .the Aerostar I’m usually crossing the numbers around 110 or 120 knots . Great landing bro, Austin is one of my favorites to land at.
You have onboard radar? Wow how do you have it mounted?
No, just my iPad. What you're seeing is the screen recording of my iPad as I fly. I suspect a radar pod would make that little RV fly in circles :-).
You are still trimming when you are over the runway? Everything should be set before you get to the runway, including trim.
What happened to the Malibu
The family just didn't like flying in it, so it was way too much money to spend to fly for burgers with friends. We have a new baby, so it was going to be even harder to use it. My plan is to build another ~500 hours and then move up to turbines...if I can afford it!
Sounds like 1P's radios were not receiving well. Would explain most of his lack of responses and the responses he gave. He even asked "ATC can you hear me better now?" - probably tried switching radios.
Yeah that’s a good point. I wondered if that was legit or if it was used as an excuse. But I think you’re probably right.
how does your autopilot do inside of flap speed, flaps in / flaps out? my rv-6 starts to get real mushy below 115 mph or so, and i think doing approaches slower than that makes for uncomfortable flying
I get an audible warning at 100kts (same speed as yours gets mushy) and generally flip it off when I'm not in approach mode. I've found that it chases altitudes, which creates a cycle that gets progressively worse. When it's in approach mode, it tends to do ok below 100kts, but I don't think I've ever kept it on below about 95.
Hey Taft, Have followed your channel for sometime now. Realized you owned a PA 46 previously. Am evaluating purchasing one. Would love to connect and learn more about your ownership experiences. Is there an email address I can reach out to you on?
Yes happy to connect. Here’s one you can use: russets-shuteye0t@icloud.com
Told him 4021, but then changed it to 4024
but yeah, hes a mess. Radios?
Yeah I caught that the second time I listened. Not ideal, but that controller was on the edge by the end I think.
Great video. Ouch I guess I'll keep the Cherokee six a little longer!
How expensive is a TBO on the piper 500 ?
Quite a price decrease. Didn’t think the decision to sell would be about your kids. Was hoping to hear more about costs since I’ll be making the same journey you did a couple of years ago
Yeah, I think we’ll get back to something bigger in a few years. Once the kids are self-sufficient in the back and my wife isn’t wrangling them constantly, I think she might get back on board. I’ll start working on a video about costs before long. It will probably be like the one I made about the Malibu.
So interesting that plane used to be in my hangar in Lees Summit Mo and was owned by a 3 person group in which two of the guys were EX-A10 pilots at Whitman AFB, which is what the emblem on the side stands for. That is a super solid plane and was well taken care of by that group !!!! Good luck with it a blue skies !!!!
Thanks! I actually didn’t know about the owner(s) prior to the previous one. Awesome to hear they took great care of it. It definitely shows.
Congrats!
Thank you!
beautiful plane and great avionics
I appreciate it. No complaints - has been fun to fly.
Congrats on the new plane!
Thanks so much!
Excellent video. I really appreciate your thoughtful analysis.
Awesome - I hope it was helpful!
What hotel is that? We’re heading to San Miguel in April:) Great video!
Thanks! Sorry for the slow response. It’s the Belmond hotel.
You said your wife didn't enjoy being in the back of the SR, with the kids, then the same for the Mirage. Perhaps she's just not cut out for GA passenger flying? Some people aren't. Maybe stick to commercial for the family trips etc, and get a smaller, sportier plane that's really just for your own enjoyment? Eg. A RV-14!
Yeah, I think you’re right. We may revisit in a few years when the kids are older and wrangling them in the back is such a pain. She enjoyed our trip to Mexico with just the two of us. But for now, we are flying commercial anytime we go somewhere as a family.
Hey, I couldn’t fly safety statistics comparing the sr22 and the m350. Do you have a accident rate by 100k flight hours? I can’t put a number on it. Do you miss any of the avionics provided in the latest g7 or m350?
What do you need besides a ppl to fly to Mexico from the US? Also can you rent a plane to fly to Mexico or does the plane have to be yours?
Kinda sums up that you need to be a millionaire to run one of these planes to stay comfortable
Yeah, while I’m not a millionaire (yet), I would have to be to buy anything bigger. I’ve scaled it back to an RV because it’s way too expensive if it doesn’t quite fit our mission.
Welcome back!
Thanks so much!
Welcome back, looking forward to seeing what you go with!
Thanks! Pumped to be back
Thank you it was great. I will finally take my beloved wife to fly with me and I hope she will love flying. Thank you...
Oh man, that sounds like fun. I hope she loves it!
👍
The drive from Sugarland airport to CRP is about 180 miles or 2 and a half hours. By the time this lady drove to SGR…then from CRP by Uber etc. to downtown Corpus…this was a very expensive way to maybe save her a couple of minutes. I have done these flights from KAUS to Memphis etc. in a C-210 and A-36 and although still cost quite a bit more than round trip on Southwest…I was looking for a reason to fly anyway. Your Malibu would be great for longer trips and God bless you for helping!
Yes, you’re absolutely right. This is one of the missions that made me slow down on accepting flights. I’ve become much more picky. I even had someone tell me offhand that they didn’t really need a flight, but wanted their family member who was traveling with them (and capable of driving) to experience it.
its been a year now - how did your estimates hold up so far? A updated video would be great.
My estimate held up pretty well. Unfortunately, I ended up selling it and downsizing because we weren’t using it enough to justify the fixed costs. It’s hard to say whether the estimate would have held up well over multiple years. There are big swings that can happen with such expensive parts. I’ll do another update in the next few months with my new plane - an RV-7a.
if the plane is paid for are you required to have insurance?
No, you can fly without insurance. Most people usually at least carry liability insurance though.
Nice video with wise comments but if you speed up your speech…
Yeah, it’s a habit. I’ve retained from teaching English overseas for a few years. Good note though. I appreciate it.
Ouch ! Thanks for info. I use swags too ( scrum / agile )
