Lovely painting and great tutorial on the use of the hake brush.Thank you.
Very beautiful painting. Love the mood of it. I never thought the sky would smooth out that much but it did! It's lovely.😍
Brilliant
Love your demonstrations. I learn so much. Thank you
❤
Lovely clear explanation of he sketching. Thank you!
thanks Stephen!
beautiful work Stephen
Many thanks for your positive comments, Steve
Though I'm a beginner and I don't have a hake brush yet, I'm going to try this painting with some flat brush. Thanks for this amazing tutorial, I love it! Greetings from Hungary! 🥰
Greetings from the UK! If you try this exercise with a different flat brush, try and use one which is soft. Thanks for your comments and good luck. Best wishes, Steve
Thank you very much, dear Steve!
Just beautiful ❤❤
Many thanks for your lovely comment, Steve

Many thanks for your lovely comments. I am intending to do more videos so keep your eyes on my channel. Make sure you subscribe and you should be notified when a new video is ready. Best Wishes Steve
Beautiful!
Thanks for the lesson.
Brilliant! New to watercolours and loving them. New subscriber!
Thank you for your comment. Good luck with your painting. Watercolours can be frustrating at times but unbelievably rewarding when it all goes well! Steve
Once again fabulous Stephen. Hope both of you are keeping well. All the best Jan and Bill
Hi Jan, We're good thanks. Be nice to see you at the NEC in autumn if you are visiting. Cheers Steve
Loved your painting. Thank you for sharing
You are welcome, Steve
Lovely painting sorry what type of pen should I use for line painting pls
Hi Colin, The pens are Unipin fine liners. 100% guaranteed not run when the paint is added. Be careful because other brands of pens state that they are waterproof or water resistant. I always advise that you test the pens first. With Unipin you won't have to. Best wishes Steve
Thank you very much for the reply looking forward to buying ur new book
You are welcome. The new book has just arrived and now available to ship. I have copies arriving on Monday and they will be available everywhere within a couple of weeks. @@colinball7502
Perfect, as usual. Detailed description of paint/water ratio, paint consistency and mix. Extremely useful and enjoyable. Thank you, Stephen.
Hi, Many thanks for your lovely comment. Best wishes Steve
I love your videos. Thank you for all the great tips and for zooming in when doing the fine details, it helps a lot! This one is going into my "watercolor" playlist :)
Hello there, Thanks for your comments. I'm pleased that you enjoy the videos and I hope you get some good results. Best wishes, Steve
@@stephencoates8165 thank you Steve 😌
hello sir can you put a reference photo beside so we can more understand the color usage
There is no reference photo. The sky is a figment of my imagination!
This one was very helpful, thanks so much!
don't you think the shadow under the boat is a bit too strong, mate?
Hi there, Thanks for your question. Firstly I assume you mean reflections not shadows. The two are quite different. I've studied reflections and written a book on the subject and you can actually represent reflections in many different ways. They can be softer than the subject or a similar tone dependant on the conditions. So in answer to your question, in my view they are not too strong. Best wishes, Steve
hello sir what dark color did you used?
Hello, the dark colour is a strong mix of ultramarine and light red. Hope that helps Steve
Yes, it was exciting to watch it take shape, thank you!
Hi there, I am glad you found it exciting. Watching watercolour washes develop is very satisfying providing they are left to settle natuarally. Good luck Steve
I like this video. I started watercolor a few months ago, and have a set of cheap hake brushes. I find them unique and fascinating to use. I am very much in the early stage of using them.
what color paint did you use for the plum? Did you mix it, or is it straight out of the tube?
Hi there, The plum colour is a mix of ultramarine and light red. Striaght from the tube with a little water added to allow mixing. The light red is strong so be careful not to add too much. The resulting mix should be quite thick like oil. If it is too wet it will disperse too quickly on the previouisly wet paper. Keep working with the hake brushes, they are amazing! Best wishes, Steve
Dude, enough of that commercial get on with it!!!
Hi there, Providing free demonstrations on UA-cam for you to watch takes a lot of time and effort. Most of us have products or services to promote so please be patient with the artists as they try to make a living. Best wishes, Steve
Super awesome still life tutorial ,thank you so much🌹
Ah can see the full image at 5:30 after you have dampened the paper! Thanks 🙏
Hi Stephen. Lovely tutorial again - would liked you to have paused on your finished pencil drawing so that we could copy it. The palette was in place too quickly for me 😊 See you at Patchings
Super demo, thanks for sharing
You are welcome, glad you enjoyed it, Steve
Very inspiring. Love the way you created the effect of bark on the trees. I will give it a go. Thanks!
Soooo nice! Thanks for this tutorial.
Love this
Thank you. Are you at patchings this year
Hi Geoff, Yes I have my own stand at Patchings. Come and say hello if you're attending. Best wishes, Steve
You are a great teacher!
The best watercolor tutorial that I've watched, and I've watched a lot lol! The way you broke it down and talked about every step and how how to approach it has given me a new starting point to improve my own painting. Thank you so much!!!
Hi Patrick, sorry for the late response. I'm glad you have been inspired by my teaching and I wish you well with your own paintings. Thanks for your lovely comments. Best wishes, Steve
Très bonnes explications. Merci!
❤❤teacher you're the best...the painting look so alive...i love it!!!
Every time I use my Hake brushes, I have to pick the fibres off of my work. They shed!
Hi There, traditional hakes do not last forever. The clamped and stiched brush head will deteriorate and shed hairs. Occasionally you get a "rouge" brush and it's just a case of replacing it. They do differ of course from one brand to another so obviously I am going to recommend the Proarte range. Either the Ron Ranson or my own signanure version which is exactly the same. One more thing, It is always worth pulling any stray hairs out of the brush head before using it. Hope that helps! Steve
Brilliant tutorial with great explanation of water to paint ratio. Thank you!
Pronounced harkay.
Your watercolor enigma book-worth every penny.
16.45 love that. Good to watch you again. Hope you are both well. Jan and Billxx
