Packed quilt as lumbar pad
This is a short video clip showing some features of my Zpacks Arc Haul Ultra 60L that makes it fit me extremely comfortably. The pack is loaded with 30 lbs of gear including a Bearikade Blazer bear canister. My quilt is loaded first at the bottom of the pack and creates a sort of lumbar support that helps transition the weight from the hip belt up onto my lower back. The horizontal carbon fiber stay and the arcs of the vertical frame stays keeps the bear canister from touching my back

Part C. Flash Cool Crystal Samples into Liquid Nitrogen
Переглядів 75Рік тому
A small crystal is viewed in a microscope, picked up by hand on a small loop on a pin in a base held by a magnetic wand, plunged into liquid nitrogen and inserted into a spot in a Unipuck for later X-ray diffraction data collection. Got that?

I show how I pitch and pack my Durston X-Mid Pro 2 ultralight backpacking tent in this short video. I do something different from what I have seen from Durston and others, so I thought I would share it with you. The tent was previously folded up with a polycro / polycryo footprint that weighs about 51 g and protects the 15D Sil/PEU nylon floor of the inner tent from excess abrasion on granite a...
Zpacks Duplex Tent Pitched with No Stakes (Big Rock/Little Rock)

I pitched my Zpacks Duplex on hard ground without using any stakes. I used the Big Rock / Little Rock method to hold the guylines as well as using the optional Flex Poles. As regular viewers know, I am a fan of the Flex Poles despite their added weight. One still needs to put vertical poles up into the tent peaks to make this tent bomber in windy conditions, so I always insert my trekking poles...

How to Use a USB Load Tester to Select a USB Charging Cable
Переглядів 4,9 тис.3 роки тому
Not all charging cables for USB devices are created equal. Charging cables will have their own unique resistance that create voltage drops and thus reduce the power (Wattage) available to charge the internal batteries of USB devices such as phones, power banks, watches, and headlamps. Generally, the longer the cable and the thinner the wires, the larger the power loss created by the cable. This...

🥇 you deserve the hiker’s Nobel prize
Do you use a seperate bottle for the bidet or your regular drinking bottle?
I use my regular drinking bottle. My studies show there is no splashback on to my bottle. Also, I always wash my hands, so at the same time I could soap up my regular drinking/bidet bottle. What do you do?
would there be a benefit in taking a longer cable to allow solar charging of your phone with your backpack on? or are you largely charging with solar while stationary? great video. thanks!
Yes, there would be a benefit of a longer cable if charging while underway. I actually do not use a solar panel while hiking myself as my tests prove to me that taking two 10,000 mAh power banks is lighter and I have to resupply anyways before both those power banks are depleted. I have used a solar panel when stationary at home to keep my backpacking electronics (phone, headlamp, etc) charged for more than 2 months in one of my long-term tests.
The audio was clipping a bit but I enjoyed your video immensely
Thanks! I have to say that I am not into "production quality" with my videos as everyone can tell. :)
@ I understand. I myself am just a mere hobo vlogger but I will say the can have terrible video and stuff but if you audio is sub par it will all be judged by that. Audio seems to be king of making it happen.
THANKS!!!!
Necessity is the mother of invention.✌
Awesome method especially if it's really windy. Nice video.
Adding the trekking pole just for additional support? Is it flimsy with the freestanding kit alone?
While I would not write "flimsy" it definitely will not hold up in windy conditions without the additional mostly vertical poles into the two peaks. If you pitched it inside a garage or house or other windless place, it would be fine, With 3 poles into each peak (trekking pole, and 2 flex poles), the tent is quite bomber. And here's text from Zpacks.com: "The poles will flex and bow horizontally when the wind gusts. In very windy conditions, you should use sticks or trekking poles to prop the peaks of the tent to create a very rigid shelter."
The way you edit and fumble around You are insufferable! It is a good idea though.
In the video it looks more like folding halfs instead of thirds but I get it. Good method.
Marvellous idea! Thanks for sharing it! You should produce them and sell in the market….
Excellent method, brother.
Nice craftsmanship, but however I am unclear about what the actual benefit is. It would be helpful if you did a with vs without video to show the difference if any. Without any measurable benefit I am not going to add weight to my cook system. Aluminum pans typically do a good job at distributing the heat over the surface area of the pan.

Thank you for this! Very helpful.
Loved the music, lots of info! Thanks!
Soyer squeeze doesn't disenfect water.
OK, but it is reported to remove Giarida cysts and Cryptosporidium spores. Probably helps remove large intact viruses, but not necessarily small viruses. One can add drops of bleach per WHO and CDC if one wants to try to disinfect water. There is no remedy that I know of for poisonous molecules like arsenic, uranium salts, etc.
I really liked this format, short, to the point, easily understandable, and respectful of our time. Great format and gear!
Thank you! Things have changed for 2024. Better adapters, better 6" cord, and instead of F21i the NL2150RX
@@jimpflugrath6220 I'm using the NL2150HPI with the charger and lantern adapters, I'm also using an extra 21700 flashlight that can use that battery, so I have extra battery if needed, although I'm more of a camping guy so weight isn't much of a concern for me. Thanks for the update, I might have to grab one for my ultralight backup bag.
Thick aluminum spreads heat all by itself. If you want to demonstrate heat diffusion cook the egg in a lightweight Toaks titanium pot.
You should make a video about folding a fitted bed sheet. You'd make a killing. Lol You could just pick it up and smoosh it in your bag.
It is not a case for a Quick Charge which is in every mobile phones now (or similar technology). On the other hand, the difference in your case is only around 2% in power on a standard 5V charger - insignificant.
I think some heat could help form a nozzle...
K.I.S.S keep it super simple...very nice 👍
Great way to fold the tent!! Thanks! What when it rains 😉
I think you would get wet if you pack up your tent in the rain. There is no magic here. What do you do when it rains?
Yeah I wait until,it stops...... well when that happens. It is just that I would like to see how others are doing the packing while raining, I mean I hope to see ways to keep your stuff as dry as possible...@@jimpflugrath6220
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for the fold job.
Update for you. My X-Mid Pro 2 came today (1/7/23). I easily set it up the first attempt. I used your method to take it down. I made a couple of staking errors but other than that, your method worked like a charm. I’ll be using this method from now onward. Thanks again for the fold job.
Really appreciate your tutorial here! Made my life easier. Happy Trails!
Great review. I’m going to order one NOW
are you using the same bottle for drinking water? That'd be weird to me since water splatters, but if not, shouldn't you also weigh the bottle?
Yes, I am using the same bottle that I drink from though with a different screw-on cap and straw. Your question is a frequent concern by many, but I have never seen evidence of splash back to my hand nor bottle. I do not need to place the bottle nor straw near the point of body contact when I squeeze the bottle. I think you can test this yourself (maybe put some ink in the bidet water?) and see if you get back splatter where you don't want it. Also I think it would be very difficult to get dirty water into the water that is in the bottle. Of course, you should wash your hands with soap as a matter of good personal hygiene. If you like, you can use soap on the outside of the drinking/bidet bottle, too.
jhc, you could have done all that shit with the original bottle you collected the water in
Thank you! I have a tester now and wanted to see what cables and which chargers were worth keeping in my box of them!
What a guy !!!
but isn't the purpose of this can to be as light as possible?
Very ingenious and yet highly practical. Could even have applications in countries with poor quality water where particulates can harbour bacteria and other harmful organisms. Thanks for sharing.
Who needs a tent when you can have this!
Great innovation
Can't wait to see how this works on the trail.
Good luck! Be sure to watch the 2021 improvements videos.
Too fast. Annoying music. Not much info.
This is ingenious, and it totally looks better than holding it with your hand, or god forbid, wearing it on your head.
That's awesome. I'll be making my own trekking poles, so this is the solution I've been looking for to fit an umbrella inside the upper shaft of a trekking pole. I found a company that specializes in telescoping tubing with twist fittings to lock them in place and keep moisture out. I need to find out the inside diameter needed to stow the umbrella.
You look like you are about to fly, sort of like the guy who few with geese🤣 I love this umbrella, too. Thanks!
Is it necessary to remove the hat harness? I'm thinking it would be useful to be able to use it as a hat or with the pole depending on circumstances. I have a couple of these hats. They're excellent!
The metal of the hat harness on the umbrella as purchased always dug into my head, so I removed it for that reason and eventually to save weight. In the video I always wore a baseball cap to help protect my scalp. Plus this harness is terrible in any kind of wind, so I have moved on to other methods and attach the umbrella to my backpack in a much more wind-resistant way as shown in subsequent videos on my channel.
@@jimpflugrath6220 I see. The harness is comfortable on my hat, and it's easy on/off, so I will probably keep it. I do like your pack attachment. Your "guylines" are brilliant. I have a different sort of pack attachment, but it will take a while for me to figure out whether I like it. Most of the time I get rain without wind. An umbrella is great for that. I have a front-zippered poncho (MYOG) if the wind picks up. It attaches to the pack as well.
That is an absolutely ingenious way to take the tent down. I've been racking my brains for how to pack the tent up more efficiently, and you've got the perfect solution here. Thanks!
A Durston tent is not even close to being worth $700+ nor is it anywhere near as popular as they've made it out to be. There is nothing that his tents is made out of, or the way it's made that warrants that type of pricing, there just isn't. I've done a deep dive into their tents, I looked up the material and amount used, the schematics how they're put together, factored in the labor and the maximum price it comes to is only $450 There is nothing else that can legitimately justify where there other $300 is coming from. I finally realized that the only possible way a price of $700 could have ever shown up is because, Durston, ZPACKS, NEMO, and Big Agnes do the exact same to raise tent prices, as landlords do to jack up rent prices. They literally conspire with each other to artificially create a price increase so it looks like that is the price everywhere. The reality however, is all they did was get together and discuss how to create an artificial price increase, went ahead and did it by used the whole "Ultra-light" and material excuse to hide what they did, so it only appears to seem legitimate These tent prices are a complete joke and everyone needs to quit feeding into it. Price of a Durston 2 person tent is only $450 max because I did the math and it doesn't add up.
Ha! Ha! I guess you have never worked in "retail" selling things. Sellers can charge what the market will bear and not what it costs them to make an item. Markups can be HUGE! Another example is perhaps eyeglass frames which are often sold for more than 10 times what they cost the wholesaler. But there are also R&D costs. Maybe you have heard the following expression in pharmaceuticals? -> "The first pill is a billion dollars, but the rest are only a dollar each." Of course, this is a sensitive topic. And don't forget about the costs for the phones, computers, office space, warehouse space, web site, warranty repair/replacement, customer service, future developments, and whatever else goes into running a business selling innovative products. Thanks for the comment!
@@jimpflugrath6220 I've worked plenty of retail jobs and know what things cost, so don't give me that crap about office space and phones and that other nonsense Those expenses apply at a very minimal level per item and it's by choice. Durston is a tent Maker, and clearly doesn't have a factory or warehouse so he doesn't even come close to the associated costs you're trying to apply. And before you ask how I know that, I'll just say them being out of stock for months on end proves this. So don't even come at me with that line of crap. I calculated everything about that tent and it ends up being $450 which includes a $100 profit per tent. The additional $300 has no possible place it can come from and it's just him price gouging..pure and simple. Here is a video I made about litefighter doing the same exact thing: ua-cam.com/video/GBIej3UMk2w/v-deo.htmlsi=heTRLTuUi-NxlN8I
Like the idea of moving stakes around folding the tent. Will try it next time out. But I got to say...with wind blowing 40 MPH and me not knowing which end is which my Pro 2 always fits in the Durston stuff sack somehow even with a Durston ground sheet attached. Not pretty, but it works. I use small rocks to hold the tent down a bit while "folding" it.
Thanks for the comment. I now leave Ti Shepherd hook stakes attached via girth hitches, so that I don't have to think about losing nor finding them. Maybe I need to make an updated video? :)
@@jimpflugrath6220 I count my stakes. Surprising how often that saves me. You do nice videos. Maybe an addendum video? Less work perhaps. Happy trails.
This is great! Thanks, Jim.
Great video. How did you attach the polycro to the bottom?
Ha! Ha! You are not the first to ask this. It is not attached. It just seems to stick. I put answers in the Comments. Hope this helps!
Hmm @7:55 it definitely looks attached haha
Yes it does, but it really isn't. :)
Small innovation I see ... you put your little red gasket on the other side of the straw... so the pressure will naturally push it inside the straw instead of ejecting it during use ;) Besides that everything is great and innovative !! Thanks !
Oatmeal loves that kid 🐶
Which PD protocols does it support?
I think it supports none. It is 5V always and one varies current only.
How much do the tent poles weigh?
In a response in the "Version 3.1" video comments the weights are listed: "35 g 2 tentpoles, 2 line-loc 3, 2 pen-caps, 1.2 mm Z-line cordage", so poles only would be slightly less than that, say 30 to 31 g. I did not want to take the bits apart to weigh them. :)
