Written by the Yiddish-speaking labor poet David Edelstadt in the year 1889. The song became extremely popular among the American Jewry in the events of the Kishinev pogrom (1903).

I grew up in a neighborhood like this one. We used to yell "to the barricades". Set the barricades on fire and rain stones on the armored police vehicles. There was always a police control checkpoint with armed police you needed to be prepared for tear gas and rubber bullets all time. This song reminds me of my childhood after 120 years even though I don't speak yiddish or not even a Jewish. Universality of music and human I guess.
