  • I give my thoughts as to why I needed a Monkey Beaver 1.0 saddle even though I had a Notch Sentinel as my first climbing saddle. I also take a look at my Klein spurs with attached Kiwi Klimber foot ascender.

The NuGreen Store in BC, Canada, is a pretty good arborist shop. They make the velcro spur straps shown on the Notch Gecko spurs.

Great review. I like what you did with the Kiwi climber on the Klein spur. I agree with your assessment that there is plenty of strength in the steel shank to take a couple of additional taped screw holes. Your honest observations of the saddles and accessory hooks was refreshing.

I should break out the Klein spur with Kiwi Klimber video so more people see it. I'll try to re-video it in action once I get my rope walking dialed in with my Unicender. I am ditching my knee ascender.

I did a video specifically on mounting a Notch Jet Step to my Kleins. ua-cam.com/video/eaTdC4nS7NE/v-deo.htmlsi=KN5UJO_ueWSS_37-

From what I understand the CMI Cali swivel is made to work with ripe or nylon webbing witch is flat. That's the reason the hole is so big and not radius like you mentioned. Stay safe

That could be. Either way, it doesn't seem very rope or even webbing friendly with it's smallish chamfers. I can't say I've gone for the CMI Cali much though. It's a big and heavy lump that I can do without.

I have the same saddle but mine is the smaller one and I love it. I honestly believe that if you return it and get the smaller one, you'll love it too. I would put money on it that it's too big.

Yeah, as soon as I climbed with the saddle the first time, I had a sinking feeling that I should have sent it back for the smaller size. Someone ended up with a very cheap Notch saddle. Had it fit better, who knows, maybe I would have eventually added leg loop straps like the Monkey Beaver. I have to have those MB leg loop straps to be comfortable. I can't have anything "tight around there". I bought Solidur Sherman XL pants which are supposed to be size 37-42 but they fit perfectly...not tight and they stretch. I am sure I am more sensitive to such things than most. I'll spare everyone the details.

My Monkey Beaver 1.0 will soon see the hot knife to shorten up all of the adjustment straps. I'm on the bottom end adjustment of a large saddle.

The Klein spurs did you buy them with the pads or did you buy the pads and put them on your spurs.

Kleins came with cheap T-pads for under $200 from Bartlett. Got the Opsal pads off eBay as they can be quite expensive from shops. I probably need to sell a pair as I have a new spare set. Opsal's don't fit the shape of my leg that well.

@hankjordan2602 Most of my gear is purchased from shops - I'm particular enough that I don't see much gear I want for sale in classifieds. I don't climb for money and so it is quite an investment for me and my boys. To have fun, learn, maintain our place, and help others.

Hey bud, I'm a little under 45 minutes from Newport across the state line in Madison County nc, if your fairly close, I'd love to do some rec climbing with you. I've been playing in the trees just under 2 years. I would like to climb with someone around the same experience as myself

Will see how the summer develops. Found out I might be changing jobs soon due to my current employer losing the contract to run Arnold AFB (R&D Testing). I need to change anyway because my wife and kids are now in the Oak Ridge area - I have to get myself up that way. Without having my boys around as much, I haven't done as much climbing. Holler at me one of these days if you want. I can load up some gear and my boys and do a little weekend adventure. BoomUp Engineering...can find me on google maps. We've taken some of our gear to cliffs like Stone Door to play around. Savage Gulf State Park.

That notch looks like a chinesse foam back brace they sell for 20 bucks..compared to 🙊 BEAVERS....😂 😮😢..the beaver is hard to beat..little warm here in Tennessee so looking at weaver stratus or courant for summer but thats nothing against monkey beaver. Have few of them there leg pads add ons are incredible..i dont like the new bungie straps on all these saddled including the tree motions..all of them and thier copys of other brands ..they pull towards the crotch.and in my opinion 499 0r 600 same thing not worth not getting the right one 1⃣...trying to get the narrow opsals but therr alaways sold out..i have the kleins and talons -pole gaffs

Yeah, I've seen those Courant Koala saddles. They make a small version which would be good for my boy but we are making due with the New Tribe saddles to which I added rings so they could run a lanyard. I do agree about the elastic and such. At first I literally started to think I would never truly enjoy climbing because leg straps creeping up make me very uncomfortable. Borderline painful because of big legs and the fact I've had hernia surgery before. I'll have to make a few more videos. I've got materials to build pads for my Buckingham Ti spurs. I want foam padding like the Opsal's but will make the metal cuffs out of thin stainless. If that doesn't work, I have another idea, plus I've got a set of Distel fiberglass cuffs. I've got screws to mount them and I'll get some foam rubber to line them like the Opsal's. I like Opsal pads best thus far - I just need something that fits my shins better.

Big difference in quality with the beaver .it's superior..and your not only one. Have rupture and hernia and can't cannot have anything riding 👆 up...I run 2 different beavers and old tree motion S light .but I'm smaller guy...I will tell you unless you have huge leggs and long ones .throw those steel geckos 🦎 away .had them on lowest setting and that green plastic pad cover whatever r it is it tore and severed my knee tendon in ten minutes ..I suggest the eagle talons or the kleins like u have with upsal pads .those work ok...but being short have to modify everything. And cut a inch or more off the shanks.kleins have better spur itself it stays in wood better .

My Notch Sentinel saddle and steel spurs are gone! Sold them recently since I knew I didn't want to use either. I did recently spend a couple full days in my Kleins with Opsal pads. I probably do need to try one of the Buckingham pads. The Opsal Cadillac's just don't fit my calves well enough. Not sure which pads I'll try, but they'll probably have the steel inserts which I can shape as needed. I'm about 6'-1" 225#. I can't remember how well the Gecko's fit my calf but I hated how the stirrup didn't grip my boot shanks. They moved all over the place. I installed one NuGreen velcro strap which should fix some of that. However I also bought the cheaper Kleins and liked them better. Thus sold the Geckos. I'm going to buy a second pair for me and my boy. May try Buckingham.

Don't know how anyone can wear those green geckos 🦎. Dangerous for the legs
