Big fan of ultra bike pack racing and adventuring!
One Day of the Great Southern Brevet
After 3 months rehabbing my knee injury it was ambitious to take on this 1,100 km loop starting and finishing in Tekapo, New Zealand. Nevertheless, I lined up with around 200 people, which is a great sign of the growth of bike packing in NZ. I didn't make it further than the first day but was still great motivation to push the rehab hard in order to at least be in a position to try! Thanks for watching, and congrats to all those who finished the route!

Southern Alps Crossing | Weekend Mission With Rufus
Переглядів 10 тис.21 день тому
Trying our best to find an alternative route to cross the Southern Alps, Rufus and I get far more than what we bargained for. The total planned route turned out to be overly ambitious but nevertheless it was an epic weekend and a new piece of NZ unlocked for us! Enjoy
The best 500km of biking in New Zealand? | Kahurangi 500
Переглядів 16 тис.2 місяці тому
The Kahurangi 500 is a route which circumnavigates the Kahurangi National Park via the Old Ghost Road, Heaphy, Rameka and Porika trails. Fantastic singletrack surrounded by amazing scenery and wildlife makes it my pick for the best taste of what New Zealand has to offer in one ride. I used this ride as my final sizeable training ride before travelling over to Kyrgyzstan to race the Silk Road Mo...
Silk Road Mountain Race | Battle For The Win
Переглядів 29 тис.4 місяці тому
The Silk Road Mountain Race is a 2,000km bike packing race through the picturesque mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Heat, altitude and difficult resupply made this race truly testing for me, especially the first few days. I managed to keep pushing through and walked away with an unforgettable adventure that I would recommend to anyone!! Thanks for watching Massive thanks to @lloydjwright and @silkmount...

Rufus and I tackle a loop in the mountains close to the capital city of Bishkek in order to familiarise ourselves with the terrain, heat and altitude we are going to experience in this weeks Silk Road Mountain Race. Certainly learnt a lot over the four days!!! Cheers
Hanmer Hundy Race | 100km of Singletrack Goodness

The Hammer Hundy is an XC marathon race through the Hanmer Springs Forest. This was the inaugural running of the race, so the turn out was low, but the course is amazing. Really enjoyed battling it out with the competitors for 6 hours! Enjoy
The Unconquered Route | Le Petit Brevet 'Misery'
Переглядів 7 тис.10 місяців тому
In 2021 Le Petit Brevet 'Misery' route was created by event organiser Andy Chalmers. That year Rufus and I decided to attempt this ridiculous route and try to complete the 15,000m of climbing before the 38 hour cut off. We both failed miserably, and so have all other attempts. Last week I decided to give this route a try. As expected, it was absolutely brutal! Thanks for watching
Tour Te Waipounamu | 1st Place
Переглядів 23 тис.11 місяців тому
Tour Te Waipounamu is New Zealand's premier bike packing race. The route spans the length of the South Island and a large amount of the 1,330km covered involves hiking and technical single track. This race was my key focus for 2024, and it's certainly a privilege to be able to race through this impressive landscape including sections of private property. The racing was exciting with good friend...

Here's my bike and gear check ahead of Tour Te Waipounamu, New Zealand's premier bike packing race. Spanning 1,300km over the length of the South Island, the route has several notorious hike a bike sections and plenty of technical riding to make it one of the toughest events on the bike packing calendar. Check out what I've decided to take and feel free to put your thoughts in the comments. Cheers

Tour Te Waipounamu is a 1,300km bike packing race spanning the length of New Zealand's South Island. With technical terrain and tedious hike a bike sections gear selection and bike choice is a hot topic. Rufus shows us how he has set his Sufur Prototype bike for the race. If you missed it, I posted a video of Rufus making this video from the ground up! Enjoy, and remember to follow the race @to...
Ride The Wilderness | 126km Gravel Race

The West Coast Wilderness Trail is a popular multi-day touring route on NZ's West Coast. At 'Ride The Wilderness' we raced through this scenic 126km on gravel bikes. I managed to keep with the lead group to the halfway point where I took a slam on a corner which cost me some time.
Le Petit Brevet | Fastest Known Time Attempt
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
The event which got me hooked on ultra distance bike racing. Le Petit Brevet is my yearly test of form on Banks Peninsula, Canterbury. The 300km course has a brutal 9,580m of climbing and single track sections which makes the route difficult to complete in the 38 hour cut off time. This year I try and beat the fastest known time set by Myles Gibson in 2021, this requires an average speed of 17....
Tour Divide 2023 | Podium Finish | Part 2

Picking up after a horrible night spent dragging a heavy bike through thick mud in the Great Basin of Wyoming, part 2 is a look into the second 2,200km of my Tour Divide ride. In Colorado and New Mexico I decide to limit my sleeping routine in order to move up the leader board but the heat of New Mexico certainly takes it's toll on my progress! "...be a great place for a snack if we had one" 😄
Nice one Joe! I bumped into you after you came off Pisa - cycling with Katy. Great to meet you, and hope the knee comes right - see you at the next one!
Is there a minimum gear requirement or anything or is it just up to you what you want to take?
Kudos mate , never ignore knee pain
Tough day at the office! Look after yourself and take the time to fully recover.
Madmen! Respect on this race, the distances are incredible. I like the idea of doing it but don't think I could put myself through the physical suffering 😅
you have any details on your cockpit setup? I see profile design bars, but which ones did you choose? Fred bar? etc??
VERY SMART TO KNOW WHEN TO BOW OUT. YOU AND RUFUS WOULD BE GREAT ON TOUR DIVIDE 2025, PACK THE BEAR SPRAY THOUGH. ......😁
Good to see a new video. Really enjoy them. A shame you scratched but you will come back stronger
Sometimes you’re the hammer, sometimes you’re the nail! Good to see 200 odd bodies for this type of event! Do you feel that these events are gaining momentum in NZ? Thanks for the video Joe.
Just found your Chanel and really enjoying your rides. Seeing parts of NZ that I have never seen. Thanks
make sure you're getting enough fish oil, krill oil, etc in your diet. As an elite athlete your fatty acid requirements will be different than the average Joe. No pun intended 😄
Thanks for sharing! I watched the dots for a bit, the videos after the fact are way better 👌🏻
Great that you took it on, wise that you pulled the plug, and thank you for sharing it all anyways. Hope you have a fantastic PT.
And no snakes! Gorgeous
Somehow, it's comforting to know even legends have bad days and gear mares. Sure you will both be back killing it soon.
Shame Joe, but good call. Sort of ironic I saw you just as you were scratching! Good luck with the rehab. See you out there somewhere!
Great vid as always Joe. Shame about the knee but I'm happy you decided to listen to your body. Rest up/ hit the physio and no rushes to jump into the next one from any of us, we'll still be waiting! Cheers bro
yeah joe! would be so sick to see you in banff come june, I have to go back again.
Absolutely awesome to hear you're targeting your divide!!
Nice touch. Thanks for the update.
Thanks for the update & good that you didn't suffer any major disasters (your dot still shows on the road up to Mt Pisa). Good luck preping for the TD!
Was following you shame about Rufus as well just means you have more adventures ahead. Until next time (it was still enjoyable to watch the dots) 😊
This one wasn’t to be, but thanks for taking us along. Still made for a good video and looking forward to future adventures.
Legend!
A great watch team loved it and the incredible beauty of Aotearoa.
In March 2003, Dave Mitchell, Jo Arts and Pete Braggins did exactly the same trip. A lot more rideable then. They also did West to East over Browning Pass and North to South. dUrville to Port Craig all of road. There’s a challenge for you Jo.
Sounds great, I'll look into it for sure, thanks!
Looked like “fun” (If you can maintain a sense of humour)😂. I think I would have been just on the right side of pissed off! Fish and chips for the win! Great video, thanks to both of you for having us along and taking the time to document it. Cheers!
Thanks a lot!
Love the bromance!
Geezz mate, you really like the punishment don't you> Well done anyway ,to come home first in the those conditions is a remarkable achievement.
AWESOME TO SEE YOU AND RUFUS DOING A TRIP TOGETHER. .....
Mate love watch you two just going on goofy adventures.
You entered Arthurs Pass National Park. It is illegal to take a bike into the Park Great idea to put your crimes up on UA-cam. The moment a bikers arse hits the seat the entitled penis thinking starts
You two are absolute nails!! How’s Rufus’s bike holding up?
His bike seems bombproof!
Nice one Joe! Thanks for sharing! I took a tip and used TT cups when I did HT 550 last year. Real back saver!
Great stuff! Good to take the weight off the hands too aye
What were the two of you thinking king!!! That was completely mental.
conjuring up rides then getting around to them 8 years later is also my speciality
I tramped Harpers Pass 2-3 decades ago, and it would never have occurred to me back then that some maniacs would actually ride the thing on mountain bikes. Back then the only way to ride it was via a horse trekking operation, so awesome stuff guys!
Haha cheers mate
Thanks for the inspiration Joe and Rufus
are there not many ticks in NZ? that bush bashing would be scary in europe or the US
none
Nice job guys, that's a proper mission!
Thanks Rob!
Great effort, great music👌
ur my idol
top effort as ever lads
What is Rufus' bike? Its a beauty. Steel frame?
Self made 'Sufur', built it in his garage!
@joe.nation hectic! It looks great
Mate! What an adventure! I bet the beds were tempting at that stage with the weather the way it was! Great work! Love your videos! Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks heaps mate, will do!
Where did you guys sleep at 7:13? Community center? School?
It was a school. He mentioned it earlier in the video
Joe, do you ever ride road bikes? Or strictly mountain and gravel?
I dont own a road bike, but would for sure if I did!
He sheep. You boys not from Southland then.
I took my bike for a walk over Harper Pass this time last year, your video brings back so many memories - thanks. I have to agree with your title 'Never Ride the Harper Pass'. Unless you love a big grovel with some rewarding cool section's too 🙂.
