Evelyn was the angriest Carrie, and it really worked with the rest of the production. Her Destruction is probably the most stunning. I still like Keaton and Linzi more because they actually looked and sounded like the child Carrie really is, but Evelyn is right up there with them.

I so wanted to like this. It might be the smallest of the Lloyd Webber musicals, but is my favourite, with some of the best ever tunes in the history of musical theatre. I was in my teens, growing up in England, when the original version of the entire piece was televised, starring Marti Webb, for whom the musical was originally written. I immediately fell in love with the piece, with Marti and with her voice. I saw her perform it 10 years ago in London, and even at 70 her performance was sublime. I still play the original recording to this day, and have listened to and enjoyed Sarah Brightman’s and Denise Van Outen’s performances even though they fall short of Marti’s. I’ve only become aware of the Bernadette Peters version of the show from UA-cam, and have just watched this through. For sure she can sing and act, but the performance doesn’t come close to Marti Webb. Worst of all is the accent. Did she take lessons from Dick Van Dyke’s voice coach? Just dreadful. Clearly, it is possible for an American to portray convincingly a British character, as Renee Zellweger has amply demonstrated. Unfortunately, Ms Peters’ attempt at the same feat is so wide of the mark as to come across as a very poor parody. This material deserves better. A 4/10 from me.

I was lucky enough to see Betty Buckley's opening night on Broadway in this show. She recieved several standing ovations throughout the show. For me, there is no other Norma Desmond! Got to meet her after the show.

I was born in the late fall of 1978. The Very Pretty and Extremely Talented Bethy Buckley is the best and one and only Grizabella Ever! She received the Tony Award for her portrayal of Grizabella! I was fortunate enough to see Betty Buckley in the national Tour of Hello, Dolly at the Kentucky Center for the Arts in Louisville, Kentucky as Dolly Levi! Betty was fantastic and so was the entire cast!

Alonzo was English!? All of his lines were spoken with an American accent tho!
