Skateboarder Figure Oil Painting Commission
This is a small 6x8 oil painting in a floater frame that I was recently commissioned to do. The painting was given by a mom to her son on his 19th birthday. If you have a special occasion or pet or place you would like to commemorate, consider commissioning a unique and thoughtful oil painting.

Talent!
Great painting and I love seeing the process.
Promo`SM 😴
I really like this composition!
Thanks Kevin!
Very helpful video
Excellent tutorial. Very clear instruction. Thanks!!
The moncromatic block in is a great tip & tool. And I love the concept of the clouds mimicking the rocks... interesting compositional component.
Excellent example on how to design a composition to really capture the focal point effectively-- that beautiful light & shadow around the tree!
Thanks very much Christine!
Really helpful instruction on capturing strong light (and shadows) by establishing the values early and then adjusting as you go!
So glad it was helpful!
I love it sooo much!
Thank you Kavita!
Thank you for sharing your painting process. Makes it easier to see how you arrived at the finished painting. Love how it turned out.
Thank you Julie!
Enjoyed this very much. So much more helpful when an artist explains their process as they go along. Thank you.
Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely. Do you have tips for painting from photos?
Hi Amy, thanks so much for your comment. I feel that photos darken and flatten shadows...so you can always add more color and light into shadowed areas of your photos. Also, try to be bold and make changes....a photo may have an element that you love but has something you dislike....you can change a sky, lower a horizon, add figures, move trees, rearrange the rowboats...etc....this is something I need to do more of myself....I spend so much energy looking for the perfect composition when I have it inside of me all the time. Thanks for watching, take care.
FANTASTIC it reminds me of my favorit painter Helene Schjerfbeck❤
Thank you for the wonderful compliment
Your paintings have so much individual personality in them, they feel comfortable-- almost familiar. How you accomplish this I don't know. But It isn't entirely from the subjects. There is information about perspective, light, composition and about brush strokes. It's somewhat impressionistic but not entirely and a good balance. Anyway, very fun and informative to watch.
I'm so glad you are enjoying these video Emily! Yes, I wrestle with how impressionistic vs. "tight" to leave the painting....I think we all just settle at the point where we are comfortable with the result....the most important thing is to get the values, drawing, perspective accurate....and then one can be as loose or tight as suits their artistic personality.
What a fun painting! I'm watching and hoping you don't cover up the wonderful underpainting. You must have had very thinned paint to get that great, almost crackled texture. It is so effective behind the slick surfaces of the dishes. This demo makes me want to hurry and stack up some of my dishes and give it a go!
It was a fun painting to do! I'm sure you can find a lovely stack of dishes and make your own beautiful version.
These figures are so charming. Your confident but loose touch in painting the figures is delightful and the beach itself says it all without having to shout.
Thank you so much Emily, what a kind comment!
Gorgeous painting. What a great video.
Thank you!
I love this, and it's so good to see your process from start to finish. I'm definitely inspired. Beautiful painting. Thanks so much for sharing.
I'm so happy you found it inspiring! Thank you for the lovely comment.
Beach Figures😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lovely painting. Love Maine too.
Thank you @dinah13 !
Great video, you are right the lights on the lemons,,beautiful!,
Thank you!
Great demo! I particularly liked the concepts of starting with a values block in before getting to colors and also using the palette knife to scrape back before adding thicker paint.
Thanks Christine!
Great overview for a newbie. Thank you!
Thanks Laura!
Your ability to paint and create artwork is impressive.
Thank you @recreepy

@@peterbainart YOU are very very welcome Peter 🙏🙏😊🎨
awesome tutorial and exactly what I needed to learn.
Thank you Lanie! You're the best!
Was there a reference photo at all?
Yes, I didn't include it in the video...sometimes I wonder if the reference photo is distracting or helpful to include. I would be happy to send it to you if you are interested. Just let me know where to send it.
I'm feeling blue, thank you for the inspiration 😂👌
😀 Nice, good to see the blue. I do a lot of photography and the rule of thirds is well used in composition. I was glad to hear you explain why you used four lines. A nice piece.
Thank you Ray
I like it.😊
Thank you Ray!
I say, Peter, I've always been kind of scared to paint figures with oil. But, as I see you doing it, I feel I'm waking up to it. So, thanks for the lovely feeling and for your generous shearing. Kind greetings from Spain! ❤
Thank you Marta, that's the most wonderful comment!
Awesome
Thank you Roxanne!
Great tutorial. I love the drawing of the figures it really evokes the walking motion.
Thank you Lanie!
I like it, good and loose - something I always have a problem getting - too much time doing illustrations...I've used undertones too. Do you use acrylic for this, or wait till it dries?
Hi, acrylic paint would be fine for both toning the canvas and for the block in. I use oil paint for both of these steps. I thin the toning layer with Gamsol from Gamblin Co. Gamsol speeds the drying. I thin the block in with gel medium (Liquin from Winsor Newton). This also speeds drying so that I can proceed to the next (fatter - less thinner or medium), layers.
Packed with super useful technique as usual! All the components needed to accurately represent shape & light.
Glad it was helpful!
Really great demo-- start to finish in 10 mins and packed with useful technique.
Thank you Christine!
Thank you so much for sharing this useful video 👍😊💖
You are welcome, thank you for the comment!
Love the energy. Keep it up!

Great 10 mins that's packed full-- not with donuts, but with painting technique and tips on how to make still life subjects come to life and having fun with it!
Thank you!
Very informative, Peter
Glad you liked it Christine!
Love the range of options you highlight, starting with the refurbish-- giving just a bit of effort to give existing frames a new life is good for the planet and our wallets! The lath frame is also an economical but professional option and it's great that you created a DIY video on that.
Thank you for taking the time to share this info with us. I am considering buying a table saw so I can make my own and save a little bit
You're welcome Judy, thanks so much for watching and commenting. Good luck with your frames!
