Bobby Vala Interviews Aaron Archer on the Batman: The Animated Series Toy Line
Join Bobby Vala on the Valaverse UA-cam channel for an exciting and in-depth conversation with legendary toy designer Aaron Archer! Aaron takes us behind the scenes of his time at Kenner Toys, where he worked on one of the most iconic toy lines of the 1990s: the Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS) toy collection. This interview is packed with insights, nostalgia, and behind-the-scenes stories that any fan of action figures, Batman, or vintage toys won't want to miss.
The Groundbreaking Batman: The Animated Series Cartoon
Batman: The Animated Series, which debuted in 1992, remains one of the most celebrated cartoons in television history. Developed by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, the show redefined the superhero genre with its film noir-inspired visuals, complex storytelling, and rich character development. The cartoon brought Gotham City to life with an unparalleled mix of action, emotion, and style. It introduced audiences to unforgettable versions of Batman, Robin, and an impressive rogues' gallery that included characters like Joker, Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, and Catwoman. Harley Quinn even made her debut in this series before becoming a household name.
The show’s distinct art style, dubbed “Dark Deco,” heavily influenced its toy line, inspiring designs that captured the essence of Gotham’s dark, moody atmosphere. Coupled with Shirley Walker's unforgettable score and Kevin Conroy's definitive voice as Batman, the series set a new standard for animated superhero storytelling.
The Batman: The Animated Series Toy Line by Kenner
Kenner’s Batman: The Animated Series toy line launched in 1993 and became an instant hit, capturing the magic of the show while offering imaginative play opportunities. The figures were intricately designed to match the cartoon’s aesthetic, and the line included a wide array of characters, vehicles, and playsets.
During the interview, Aaron Archer delves into the design and production process for these beloved figures. He discusses the challenges and triumphs of translating the unique animation style into three-dimensional action figures. Hear how the team at Kenner brought to life characters like:
Batman with his iconic cape and gadgets.
Robin, Batman’s loyal sidekick, complete with a grappling hook accessory.
The Joker, with his mischievous grin and sinister flair.
Harley Quinn, a breakout character whose figure quickly became a fan favorite.
Mr. Freeze, who came with his icy blue suit and freeze gun.
Aaron also shares the thought process behind iconic vehicles like the Batmobile and Batwing, which were designed to be as sleek and dynamic as their animated counterparts. Plus, he offers a glimpse into the creation of the towering Batcave playset, a centerpiece for many collectors and kids alike.
Behind the Scenes of Toy Development
In this exclusive interview, Aaron recounts what it was like to work for Kenner during this golden age of action figures. From initial sketches and sculpts to final production models, Aaron explains the painstaking attention to detail required to stay true to the show’s groundbreaking visuals. He also touches on how the toy line balanced show accuracy with the need to create exciting new versions of characters that would appeal to kids and collectors alike.
Aaron and Bobby reflect on how the Batman: The Animated Series toy line influenced future action figure lines, laying the groundwork for today’s collector-focused market. From packaging designs to play features, every aspect of the line is examined in loving detail.
Why This Interview is a Must-Watch

Hasboro has been creating desirable figures over the last 1.5yrs and just needs to do better at making products available. Hopefully Disney doest get the chance to ruin it!!
This was a great interview! Aaron Archer is an absolute legend
Love the content but would be nice to edit more visuals/b-roll of what you guys are discussing. Keep it up Bobby
Fan of the Cartoon. The toys for it were just icing on the cake. Loved that the Justice League and Superman had a interrelated style.
The Bat was one of my favorite figures in that Batman line. He did double duty in He Man in our house, back in the day.
That first Ironman movie line had alot of batman tas inspiration. Lots of suit repaints overlays and play gimmicks.
Need to show more of the toy you are talking about
I’m halfway through this video and hearing Aaron mention figures I have like the two pack Two-Face with Arkham backdrop is cool. Another figure he worked on that I don’t know if it gets mentioned yet, is the 100th edition Batman. I bought the original art Aaron did for the base years ago at a con. Humble brag, Aaron is a friend of a friend.
I sold off a lot of my Mezcos and now only collect Golden/Silver Age pieces.
neon talking super street bat luge!!! 😁
I love these interviews. Even though I know nothing about the IP, the knowledge dropped in these interviews is fascinating to hear. Please make more of these.
Brave and the Bold talks about the toy lines. It was definitely a great final episode.
This explains so much! Back in the day, I would be so frustrated that I could not find "normal" Batman on the shelves and kept wondering why the most basic Batman was so hard to find! I was lucky enough to finally get one but it really bothered me even back then that the most iconic was the least available version. I still have all of my figures. Great video. -NGSMOOV, Randall
MidFartlane Toys is trash as hell Diamond is also trash cheap paint easy to chip off
Ruin for kids or man children?
BOTH!
743 trippy.. felt like it was a Robot Jox ode
I respect the fact that Vala probably hustled some poor old guy and paid way under market value ... and he is talking about emailing him back and beating him about missing items
Any chance you could interview people that work on the 90s Kenner Aliens and Predator line. There isn't much behind the scenes on that line.
This was a great interview! It’s really cool to hear the behind the scenes stories!
This was fun, one point to clarify, I did the Legends of the Dark knight Manbat and Clayface not the original Animated line.
Max FX was such a wholesome product concept (too bad about the Freddy thing, still a wicked rad toy). One of Mel Birnkrant’s best ideas
Awesome conversation. I remember writing a letter to Kenner as a kid asking about a Ventriloquist or Red Claw or James Gordon figure. The response I got was they didn't take suggestions from outside of the company, in a nice letter from the company. 30 years later, my question is actually answered. Thanks for doing this!
I consider you guys the gods of toys, like Stan Lee etc. are the gods of comic book super heroes. So amazing that I live in a time where people who made stuff I loved as a kid and spent so much time with just posting stories about their work experience on a free platform. It is truly amazing, I'm 40 and I remember a time without internet at all. And just to have the toys in stores for your country/town and nothing else. I love these videos and you guys inspire me to work harder on my own little 3d printing and designing of little action figures.
Ollie looks like Albert Einstein
Damn, I remember when Aaron Archer was involved with Transformers. 23:16 i still have that figure. That was the start of my Azrael collection. DC did do those Total Justice comics to tie in with the figures. So that was cool. 28:12 Lock-Up, he was an interesting villain
Bro! I already connected with you thru so many videos. I’m born June 4th, 86 and that 89 Batman with the retracting belt was my number 1!!!!!!! My big sister said she must’ve bought at least 5 of them! I’d always break the belt but damn I was so hyped on the articulation back in the day. Made me love all the tots I’m still into today too! 89 Batman alllllll day!!! Hyped on the channel and all type of content you have! You have my likes and subscription Vala!
Description by AI?,
Its funny how r parents in the 80s let us watch anything 😅😅😅 i still remember bieng 12 watching the 1st 15 min of robo cop looking over at my dad wanting to say am i allowed to watch this. My dad was just chilling drinking his beer 😮 that gang bang shooting traumatized me for months. I had the 1000 yard stare by 15.
Naam fam mcu marvel isnt doing well. comic, retro shows and etc are flourishing
I've long wondered if you knew Aaron, and if you were friends rather than just colleagues. Being a big Transfomrers fan and collector (1598 and counting!) I've been aware of Aaron for a long time, and have even gotten to meet him a few times. I even bought a couple of his paintings for my son and I at the last Toronto TFCON. I don't know why, but it makes me happy that two ex Hasbro employees that I really like are friends.
Certainly would love to see more designer sitdowns with Aaron Archer and yourself. GREAT episode!
Female characters so not fuqin sell as well... You can go to ANY store right now and see this. No matter ones felling like a hoe on them, they don't. So miss me with your girl bossing
No we don't need yellow batman suit to fight two-face... Shouldn't you be better at knowing the comics? I mean, he is you muh favorite
I wasn't prepared for your to open Little John's tunic and reveal him all strapped up in black leather.
I wonder if that weird retroblast guy will make a vid about this😂
Thank you Bobby Vala, for making this video!!! I am an Aaron Archer fan and this conversation is a treasure. So much good stuff! You got a new subscriber! Also, of course I'd love to see more conversations with more Toy industry people, specially from the past.
Bobby I like your toy figure video's You got take look at their top ten figures of 2024 on 3POA and tell me that list was all wrong.
I had that mail-away Predator! I think it came in a plain bag in a plain white box... Or maybe that was some SW force ghost. Now B:TAS was a great line. The figures, especially Wombat Beltman, actually looked like the cartoon characters. I ripped the accessories off and never used them but the base was **chefs kiss** They still hold up pretty well for 5" figures, articulation notwithstanding. I like CBBM more than the 6" one I got a decade or so ago.
That WAS COOL!! I love this kind of content!
Both the figures and the toys were A1. I had so many figures
absolutely loved the animated series line, remember seeing it in a toy collector magazine for what was coming out in the coming year at the time , and I couldn't wait to get the animated series molded figures. was at the Toys R Us when they hit and bought the whole first wave, sold them all in 2006 still on card but have since been reacquiring them mint on card again. thank you Bobby for this video, so dam educating when I watch your content.
Great conversation. It'd be great to have Aaron on again to talk Transformers. He's a legend in the Transformers fandom.
I got two of his paintings at the last TFCON.
@shockwave75 his paintings are fantastic. He's so important to Transformers. That Unicron trilogy kept Transformers alive.
I was so into Batman and ate up almost anything Batman. I loved Batman TAS and it's toyline. I regret back when I was 22 I told my mom to get rid of my Batman collections.
some of the best toy content on youtube right now, informative & with passion. Thank you for this 🙏
These insider looks are dope.
I'm glad you get to show the figure you guys are talking about and some definitions of terms to some words. As much as I really wanted to listen in your previous interview, it was just hard to keep up when at one point I just simply do not know what the topic is all about.
Those days were so frustrating because all I wanted was a screen-accurate Batman, but if you weren't lucky enough to find that one screen-accurate figure in the first wave, then you were S.O.L. with every subsequent wave in the entire line and you had to settle for a Batman with a purple or orange suit and bizarre accessories. I suppose I was lucky to get Turbo Jet Batman because at least he had a dark gray suit, but I really wanted that Combat Belt Batman.
This was fascinating. Thank you so much. :)
