Dang, Bobby. Dont be so hard on yourself for the things that didnt meet your expectations. That was so long ago and you've learned so much from those experiences. I still proudly own and display that 12" ML Daredevil, along with the 12" ML black costume Spidey. That just got me thinking...would you consider doing Action Force in 12" maybe not Hot Toys tier but for instance like Threezero does the 12" Joes? I'd definitely fork over my $$$ for the Elite Praetorian and Bone Collector in that scale.
Honestly, that playset sucked, but it wasn’t your fault. I liked the 12 inch ML line and I have most of it except for that Daredevil and Captain America. Good trip down memory lane!
Sounds like toy executives are the ones that screw up great ideas. They don’t know anything about action figures. I don’t like that they always want to include a figure with a play-set or vehicle, while putting a limit on the cost. If they put the money that the figure costs towards the vehicle or play-set, it could be a lot better. Now that you are your own boss, you can make what you want without an executive that knows nothing about toys, telling you how to do your job, while pinching pennies.
cause he's fucking obsessed with that concept. Literally every video I've seen is just about that. He needs to get a life and worry about his own failing product. They offer replacement parts now since their product is so consistently bad.
These videos and topics just keep getting better and better. It goes to show the passion and patience it takes to REALLY make a great figure, as well as giving the fans a great product
That Beast has really irritated me. Not for lack of articulation… But because the “gray version” is the classic Avengers/Defenders/X-Factor Beast. But he’s gray! The other “blue version” is scowling with a feral-looking head and a gigantic yellow belt. Ugh. So I picked up neither.
David Vonner's 4 inch Marvel Universe line was amazing, it's a real shame how Hasbro sabotaged and torpedoed it to promote the return of the 6 inch Marvel Legends line...
I loved the 12" Marvel Legends line and wish it would have continued. Always was a bit mystified as to why Deadpool and Daredevil came out looking so oddly disproportionate (for superheroes, at least), though, with their big heads, big feet, skinny legs and narrow shoulders. Still hope to pick up Hulk, Wolverine and Daredevil to complete the collection sometime in the near future, though!
It takes a grown, mature man to admit a mistake or bad decision and that's respectable. We're all human and not one of us is perfect. I appreciate your transparency.
General Hawk in flight suit with his jet pack & missiles, such a awesome figure and still 1 of my favorites and in my opinion 1 the best. Should definitely do a similar figure, but with a Action Force twist on. Maybe look at the pack with wings similar to a F-22 Raptor or even go old school with some F-14 Tomcat style wings. Could totally make a troop build with them figures offer packs with different head sculpts & even weapons. I could even see like a space force build with that figure. I’m rambling, but you took me back with that original Joe. 😂 Thank You
It's such a bummer to me that 6" basically killed 3.75". Happened with Marvel, happened with Star Wars. I get the reasoning behind it, but it was still disappointing.
@Valaverse True, for better or worse. It's interesting to see Hasbro going back to 1:18 a little bit with Marvel the last few years. It's nothing special, but any insight as to why they'd have done it? Just trying for a lower price point for kids? Also, you're right, Playmates was killing it with TMNT during the time period you were discussing in this video. They were getting characters on pegs the same week they'd premier in the cartoon, pretty impressive stuff. The sculpts were good, but they started skipping out on paint apps after awhile. But I guess at an $8 price point, something had to go, especially with them maintaining that release schedule.
@@Valaverse and they will again, most likely. Just as Mego's 8" figures are no longer the industry standard, I would expect 6" to eventually go the same way, given that those kids these days who still play with action figures seem more likely to have 3.75" or even 12" figures than 1/12th-scale ones.
Haha cool to watch this and hear you randomly mention some of the stuff I worked on. I did the packaging for the TMNT 2012 sewer lair playset and the z-line playsets
I think street humans could have been alright if they had swappable arms and torsos for more of an animal feel. Just having an animal head was a terrible idea
I would LOVE to see more videos like this; I had the best time watching this. Hearing about the playset hits in the gut, though. The 80s was marked by so many great toylines that had awesome playsets. It's a shame when designers are so hampered by the restrictions of retail and upper management. I'd be really interested to hear more thoughts on what can be done today and what's hard about creating and selling playsets.
I also loved jetpack General Hawk, he was my Hawk since I was born in 84 and missed the first 2 designs. I would love to see a 6” jet pack soldier to go against my SWARM figures!
Funny you mentioned looking up old toy biz play sets for ref. I worked on Lego duplo spiderman adventures and spidey and his amazing friends the past 8 years and I was always doing the same. They’re so classic, I love them.
14:44 don’t feel too bad Pantone is the worst color service. I’m not sure how of all the colors to choose from Pantone picks all the worsts color. I’ve lost count of all the times I’ve had a sample of just the right color in my hand, and it’s just wasn’t in the PMS book. I’m so happy when the factories use any color service than Pantone. That’s my rant, I’m passionate about color. Thanks for listening
Yeah, the articulation on the MU Beast is limited but, i still think the sculpt is absolutely beautiful & holds up.I have both of them displayed behind me less than a foot away.
Btw, sorry for the flak I gave over the lack of articulation in the infinites line. Although once I knew it was a Hasbro not design move I did direct the vitriol at the managers. lol. I never would’ve guessed you did that Hawk figs. The colors you chose generally work for me so I’m surprised.
I used to collect those 4 inch Marvel figures. I stopped getting those after the articulation went downhill. Glad to know what caused that line to end.
Hi i know this is not what this channel does but since its not common to speak to someone on the industry there some things i alway wanted to know and maybe there is material for a vid. How do you get in the industry? What tools do you need to know to work in that industry? You talk about different kinda of plastic pvc, abs etc could you tell us about them, what are they for , when to use? Are molds part of the past or the best way still to make figures and is the cost of them worth it ? Things like that . Maybe
My only problem with the 1/6 Legends line was the lack of villains. Still, I really liked them and bought several. I still have them all. It's a shame the line wasn't given more time to succeed.
Dude I remember getting the 12 inch daredevil, I still love it despite being a bit skinny, I have it with my marvel legends spiderman and I really hope that marvel legends could retool this figure and make it part of the 6 inch line
I didn't know your channel existed! Huge fan of the Marvel Universe line and like you, was really disappointed with the infinite line. True enough, greed just consumes the best of people. Anyway, great channel, I hope you get awesome licenses so your Valaverse can grow.
I own the blue version of the Marvel Universe/Infinite Beast. I kinda like it, despite the lack of articulation and the head looking constantly down. The neck joint broke, so now is glued.
You kinda got screwed during your time at Hasbro. The Marvel Universe 3 3/4 line was super fun, and then all of a sudden, something changed. They started making obvious cost cutting moves, and it died. I feel like you could have done great things with it if they hadn't started cutting corners.
Don’t be so hard on yourself regarding grey Beast. I was thrilled to get a first appearance Amazing Adventures version of the character. It could have been 5 POA for all I cared. Something else that’s tangentially related to the MU line, I’ve always been curious about the choices of plastic used for some parts. I found that many wrists were made from a soft plastic that had a tendency to tear apart at the post. Why are certain materials chosen over others ( I assume cost is a factor) when producing figures, more specifically why do two 3 3/4 figures from different lines from the same manufacturer use different materials ( softer, harder ) to make what is essentially the same part. I continue to love these videos. Your insider perspective is invaluable to us collectors
Dang, Bobby. Dont be so hard on yourself for the things that didnt meet your expectations. That was so long ago and you've learned so much from those experiences. @valaverse great video! I love seeing your take on the products you’ve done in the past! I had wanted to get that SDCC Daredevil, but never did just because I didn’t collect that size, but there were elements of it that just looked so cool, that I had really contemplated getting it. The collector corps GI Joe’s always looked cool to me, and there were quite a number of them that I had wanted to get, but unfortunately at that time I was too young to have a credit card, and my parents would say, “you need to grow up and stop buying toys”, so they would refuse to get them for me, even though I’d offer them my own money, but just needed their card to get them. I would love to see a couple different play sets for Action Force, and have a few ideas for different teams (AF, Garrison, Swarm, and Pandora’s crew (have they been given a name yet (can’t remember)))! They’d probably end up being huge and expensive though, which makes the display space hard, and who knows the hurt it’ll put on a wallet. Still would be cool to come up with one or two though! I still think you’re making the absolute best toys being sold currently! Keep up the amazing work!
The Marvel universe & infinite line were such a great line when they started. As well as the Hasbro 12inch line. I still have a symbiote spidey from that line. I never knew you designed that DD, I've never owned it but I always kind of liked the tactical look you gave him.
Really cool hearing you were doing the designs for the Joe FSS towards the end. I only managed to pick up the very last set of figures they put out, plus the Heartwrencher/Stinger set. Really wish I could have gotten more of the earlier figs when they were coming out, especially Slice and Dice.
I love these videos, because I remember being so mad at whoever did Silverhawks ( It was Kenner, LJN did THundercats) when I was a kid, that I sent them a toy design for what they SHOULD have been doing with the figures. I was around 11 at the time. Rather than release Monstars Squid ( sky runner), they released a full size Tally hawk , Strong Hold and Sky-Shadow. I guess I was too impatient because later they released it almost exactly like I asked.
this was a super interesting video I don't even collect action figures are really know anything about GI Joe but I LOVE hearing designer insight plz show more pics of the things your talking about. even when you're holding them they are basically out of the shots. really cool vid besides that
Love the topic and Bobby's anecdotes, but why are the figures just out of frame lol. Just a suggestion, next time could we get them on a rotating disc or something, no need to Bobby's talking head the entire video
I have all 12 of the 12 inch scale Marvel Legends . It's one of my favorites , I even kept the boxes . Daredevils boots never bothered me very much , after all we're talking about characters that already run around in skin tight spandex . The one that really bothered me was Captain America's derpy face and eyes , it needs a paper bag . Like the one FF gave Spiderman .😊 Also , can someone ask Bobby why no villains were done ? Thanks .
Cool video, but would def love to have some close ups of the figures and playsets. At the very least though would be a lot better to have them in the frame so we can see. You tell a great story, but would be nice to see the subject matter a little clearer. Thanks.
Radical thought: lots of articulation = bad design. Reasons: articulation creates weird looking joints, creates breaking points, and gets loose with play. Reason 2: All the toys that have held up over time and are the most collectible come from the old toy lines that had far less articulation and have held up for decades. Anecdote(s): Among my dad's entire collection his favorites are his original GI Joe line, original Masters of the Universe, and the original Star Wars (New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi)... all of those are from the 70's and 80's. My favorite toy is my Spider Man from the Spider Man 2 movie and he's a highly articulate model with magnets on his hands but he's a floppy disaster. Other than that, the coolest looking and best models are all statues with 0 articulation. Side note: I grew up playing with my Dad's old "action figures" and they are still holding up and solid with their low levels of articulation they are tougher and the sculpts looking really good
Still loved the daredevil for sdcc. Just getting back heavy into collecting and having daredevil as one of my favorite heroes not to mention the amazing packaging
Great run down. No such thing as true failure as long as you learn something from each one. BTW, when can we expect news/reveals for the next wave(s) of Action Force?
4in beast is one of my favorite figures. Super cool line and compared to most characters, it had weight and the width. All the best figures from that series were either bigger or wore masks. Any that showed their face looked really mushy and the scrawny bodies couldn’t stand well
Dude, offtopic, how has never been a "standard" venom figure? Every version has some kind of compromise or its just too monstruous or is just too cartoonish, or the head is too big, or isnt too muscular, or is just too fatty, or limited on articulation, or too much of a variant version, never found a proper standard venom to go with my pizza spiderman, like that carnage of the amazing spiderman 2 line, that one was the perfect representation of the character.
I've learned more about the toy industry from you than the "toy guru" (I stopped watching him after he got smacked around by Michael French). I love these behind the scenes videos.
Many Marvel Legends for many years have feet that are too big looking. No idea why that is, maybe to match many of the oversized heads I suppose (?) At least that 12” DD is wearing combat boots that would increase foot size compared to footwear like Spidey wears. It’s a good fig really.
Let's be honest. We Adult Collectors really don't want "Playsets". What we are really looking for is diorama settings to display our figures in. Modular Wall systems would be great. But the Hasbro porta potty set looks like trash because of how flimsy and gappy they look when connected as walls.
@Valaverse give us the Special Operations Craft - Riverine is a boat used by the United States Navy to perform short-range insertion and extraction of special operations forces in river and near-shore environments. It replaced the Patrol Boat, River, and the mini armored troop carrier.
Wait, how are you putting out videos, when I just bought a bunch of items from you at LegionsCon about an hour ago? Also, I brought my Action Points to the Convention for nothing. I didn’t know the new Pandora didn’t need my points.
You big meanie . What do you do for fun , kick puppies? What if you were speaking to a child or someone with mental disabilities , or a personality disorder ... such as yourself ? @@megamike420
I've got an idea for a toy line that would absolutely crush. Let me know if you would like to talk about it sometime because I would love to get it going if possible. Thanks
The distance from 9 to 10 is so much bigger than the gap between 7 and 9. Shrinking the boots to make that Daredevil the best he could have been would have exaggerated his other flaws and then you would be sitting here talking about all the other little ways he'd have been perfect, if only... That, and there's no reason to buy a better version later if the one you already have is good enough.
That Spiderman playset still looks better than the Hasbro Classified porta potty that they are going to be releasing. Come on Bobby give us a good playset I have faith in you
If Valaverse doesn’t get the rights to marvel outright, maybe they can just rip off another up and rename it using one of its defunct brands. Timely Legends perhaps
What do you think about these toys?
I think making toys is harder than most people think. and executives can kill a top seller simply by not understanding what is going on.

Vala lays it out for y'all to play it out. 😎
Any that showed their face looked really mushy and the scrawny bodies couldn’t stand well
The first thing that came to mind for a Spider-man playset was the Daily Bugle.
Sidewinder is cold, #1 for 2024.
I want to buy something from this gentleman! I'll have to investigate the Valorverse
So, when does the Action corner playset come out.
Rebranding Marvel Universe to the Legends/Infinite killed that line. Terrible decision.
Many Marvel Legends for many years have feet that are too big looking. No idea why that is, maybe to match many of the oversized heads I suppose (?)
At least that 12” DD is wearing combat boots that would increase foot size compared to footwear like Spidey wears. It’s a good fig really.
I still love this daredevil
Bobby seeming more humble as the years go by
Do an Action Force play set and wipe out those bad memories…
Make it the way that you want and it will sell.
Let's be honest. We Adult Collectors really don't want "Playsets". What we are really looking for is diorama settings to display our figures in. Modular Wall systems would be great. But the Hasbro porta potty set looks like trash because of how flimsy and gappy they look when connected as walls.
If Hasbro farms out GIJOE, I think Valvaverse is the only logical next step
Need to show more of the toy you are talking about
”I was beat down at every turn” There is the moral of the story.
This was cool I always wondered what u consider a bad toy you did
Oh shizz Action Force playset confirmed??? 🤔🤔🤔
I love that daredevil figure.
So now with years under your belt, what could you have done differently with that Spider man playset but still at that budget?
Lol a $30 playset including a figure from Hasbro in 2024? Here's my idea-
$30 figure, box doubles as a playset.
@ioncewasmikey nah, with inflation it would have to cost more now. I'm talking, looking back what could have been done
@@LandofMert76 Haha, just having some fun
well, that spiderman playset just skyrocketed on ebay!
Yeah, doing a playset with a figure is stupid. A playset should be used to encourage people to buy more figures or to use with their existing ones.
Ah poor you 😢 You brought your points and didn't need them?
Grow up
You big meanie .
What do you do for fun , kick puppies?
What if you were speaking to a child or someone with mental disabilities , or a personality disorder ... such as yourself ?

I've got an idea for a toy line that would absolutely crush. Let me know if you would like to talk about it sometime because I would love to get it going if possible. Thanks
Transformers fan here. What do you think of em? I collect ALOT
General Hawk? You mean General Hawk Tuah! Sorry, I'll see myself out...
When we work in corporate environments, everyone has a boss. Sounds like you didn’t think out of the box enough to counter your restrictions. IMO
Spring loaded action force shooting range playset that converts to a battle field……
That playset is reaaally embarrassing
Let's call it exactly what it is: A artist trying to work inside of corporate greed. Then he proceeded to say a similar statement.... Sad
Personally I always kinda think of DD as a very thin and athletic character
That Spiderman playset still looks better than the Hasbro Classified porta potty that they are going to be releasing. Come on Bobby give us a good playset I have faith in you
That DD sucks.
If Valaverse doesn’t get the rights to marvel outright, maybe they can just rip off another up and rename it using one of its defunct brands. Timely Legends perhaps
It's still baffling how stingy Legends is with Accessories
I have an idea for an action force figure
from a far that gi joe looks like hobgoblin
Hair plugs 😂
