    what if the theres a area where the Vaneer has worn away ,can i sand the remaining vaneer off to make the door even again?

    • @jeffalbrecht1
      @jeffalbrecht1 9 місяців тому

      It depends. If you put on a very dark stain, you might get by with it or painting will always cover it up. The problem is that when the veneer is removed the underlying base takes stain different than the veneer itself. Another technique would be to put several coats of conditioner where the veneer is gone.

    Hardwood oil, such as OSMO oil

    • @jeffalbrecht1
      @jeffalbrecht1 Рік тому

      OSMO is great for interior finishes but it is not designed for exterior finishes. There needs to be resin to prevent oxidation and UV inhibitors to prevent sun degradation. Use a good oil blended exterior finish as I went over in a previous videol

    Do the oils already have a tint or color, confused about how to get the color or shade to make the door pop? And after you condition and then stain is the door left, nothing else to add?

    • @jeffalbrecht1
      @jeffalbrecht1 Рік тому

      The blended oils usually have various semi-transparent tints. If you want to go darker, stain first or add an oil based stain to the semi-transparent finish.

    @FamilyMcMahan-li9mf Рік тому

    Hi Jeff, really appreciate these insights. What application method do you recommend for these products? If I wanted a stain, do you recommend getting these tinted? Watched your video on brushing on the pre-condition. Assume that comes before applying this? Thanks!!

    • @jeffalbrecht1
      @jeffalbrecht1 Рік тому

      I prefer a soft natural bristle brush. Yes, conditioner comes first but to check out colors, apply a sample to the door first, before the conditioner. Then you can sand it off before adding conditioner to the entire door. The blended finishes usually come with a tint that is semi-transparent. If you want to go a darker color than that, then apply a dark stain first, before applying the semi- transparent finish.

    Jeff, i put 2 coats of cabot timber oil with the blue lid on my exterior door. Getting ready to put 3 rd coat on until i watched this video. Can i now put cabot oil base over cabot water base for my 3rd coat?

    • @jeffalbrecht1
      @jeffalbrecht1 Рік тому

      I do not like water-based as I go over in previous videos, so I never use the blue top cabot products. which mean that they are water-based. I have applied oil over water but it must be totally cured for a few weeks, then hand sand with 320 or so grit sandpaper first so the oil has something to bond to. I don't recommend applying oil over water if you are not experienced.

    • @jeffalbrecht1
      @jeffalbrecht1 3 місяці тому

      Glad to hear that! Just remember every year or two, depending on exposure, you will need to go over the door with 220-320 grit by hand- should only take 5-10 minutes, then brush on another coat. If you do this your door should last decades without having to strip it again.

    Hey Jeff, I’m so glad I came across your page. I am 29yr old painter in California. I am a coating product and coating geek. I am always trying to look for the master craftsmen like yourself and today I struck gold. If I could work for you for a week, I would. Is there any programs that you have that I can take to learn all about staining front doors. I notice you unlike all the other videos I found about staining a varnishing a front door, you don’t mention applying a marine varnish to finish the door. Do you apply marine varnish to any doors you finish? Is a marine varnish only if you desire a certain finish with a sheen? Thanks jeff, for being so passionate about what you do.

    • @jeffalbrecht1
      @jeffalbrecht1 Рік тому

      Hi juan, thanks for your comment. I don't like spar urethanes, they don't hold up well to high UV conditions in the mountains of Colorado, nor do they to the salt air here in Florida. They have way too much plastic resin in them that peals and flakes. I like to use oil blends that contain a mixture of tung and linseed oils with UV protection and then I add commercial pigments. There are many different brands available much more so in red states. The higher VOC's have made them removed from most blue states which are trying to copy the disaster in California.

    wow I am sure I'm talking to the right person... put we aren't any where near you... we have bought a house built in 1912... it is a cinderblock house , filled with the most beautiful double French doors between each room.. some rooms only have a single door but the multi paned windows as in French doors, the wood on these doors appear to have been left alone as far as adding alot of coats of stain ( they are stained ) however it's hard to close the doors and wondered if you have a video about that sort of restoration ? I'm not asking if we can find a person in our area to do this... we are VERY POOR RIGHT NOW !! and this house is going to take lots of money we don't have , so if you may have some solutions we can do we'd be very interested ...

      There are already several videos out there about how to fix a sagging door.

  • @steveallen1019
    @steveallen1019 9 років тому

    the biggest point the DIYer should take away from this video is the strategy of using only an oil finish and skipping the varnish. The home owner the next year will simply clean and re apply the oil stain. Wear as, if you were to use the marine varnish on top, you might be good for a few years, but will have to go through a ton of work stripping that varnish before you re apply.

    Hey Jeff, After refinishing a friend's door here in Texas with a hand rubbed finish (and a fair amount of refinishing experience) I didn't know what to charge him so I Googled for pricing and was amazed at what folks are getting for INFERIOR, sloshed-on varnish jobs. That got me to thinking about starting a business myself. Intuitively I understood what to do and how to do a hand rubbed finish and your videos have both confirmed that understanding and provided me with some really good tips.

      These people make more because they don't have to come back to let the oils dry for 24 hours, unfortunately the finish will not last nearly as long and will haze over.
