Single Brood Chamber Management: Why I Switched
Переглядів 24 тис.Рік тому
Single brood chamber management is not new, but it is growing in popularity and for good reason. This video will highlight both the advantages and disadvantages of moving to a system of restricting the queen to only a single deep brood box to use as her brood nest. While this seems to go against conventional wisdom that suggests 2 deeps are needed especially in cooler climates for the queen to ...

Beekeeping Giveaway: Win a Ventilated Jacket
Last year I wasn't even thinking about catching swarms.. But I was by my shed when I heard a lot of bees I just started to set up my beehives I got 2 early summer and early fall I got another swarm.. the fall swarm was a surprise.. I have been trying for years and I new there are bees around and I made right size boxes bottom line is I did everything right..I believe the placement is the key..the bees have to like everything about it or they won't take it and go somewhere else to call home
How did this work out? Did it keep the moths away?
Yes, It has worked great! I need to add a little support in the center as it is sagging, but it worked well and we are now in the freezing days of winter so we made it through the danger zone of fall and will have it back in the hives early spring. Bonus, no need to "air out" the comb before adding to the hives in spring. Thnaks for asking an happy beekeeping!
Single deep during flow, build up to double deeps for winter. Then early spring splits back down to single deeps and run single deep for honey
No bees don’t poop inside their house they fly over some other poor sods house with their 60000 mates and poop over that and their washing and their cars all day everyday
What is the internal set up for a 10 frame
I've reached the 40 year mark with beekeeping and I'm still learning and experimenting. And I'd never leave on the queen excluder during winter. The cluster and brood area always migrates during winter to the upper box in a two box setup. You not only risk losing the queen but an excluder will also hamper the queen's ability to expand the brood nest in late winter and early spring.
Hi, am watching Russell Island Solomon Island
I'm in Virginia not far from Kentucky and overwinter singles on a weaker colony. I run DD because the flow starts in April for buildup and drys up through May. Bees load the boxes in June and the top box is their winter stores. The bees can run out of food in August if you don't build them up with sugar/pollen before the goldenrod.. I did not feed this summer and it was a mistake as a DD turned into a nuc size cluster. I watched the robbing from one hive to the next, nuc boxes absconded from no food and my summer loss was extreme.. Yes, feeding some sugar & pollen patty has a great benefit even if it costs money. *Swarming in May is a problem if you only have a single brood box.
Goodday reader. I am more proun to the airmesh material but, the longevity of this material can be problematic. With normal use, washing and caring to the best of my ability, how long will it be still useable . Is the longevity of the 3 layer so much better as the people say? The fencing veil, how can I accommodate my headlight (thumb size) Perhaps a MAGA cap under the veil attached to my headlight? Cobus🐳
Круто!!!
Single brood management is old school. I've been keeping bees 40 years in Arkansas that's all I ever done.

Bro why are you using non food-grade plastic for your family? It’s like $30 for that setup minus time spent, just go buy a cheap extractor with food grade plastic. Take care of yourself, there’s a good reason they don’t mark those food safe
No healthy for you and your family.
Hi. Thanks for making it look easy. How do you keep ants off the bee hive? I have a problem with ants. Secondly how long should I wait for colonisation to take place?
I absolutely love your fencing veil. It doesn't sag or tip to far forward when trying to beekeep or while I am performing a honey bee cut-out from a structure. It is comfortable to wear and very lightweight, which is very important to me, particularly when I might be wearing it all day. Comfort Pro is my first choice!
I absolutely love the Comfort Pro jacket with the air mesh material paired with the fencing veil.
Will these protect against hornets?
Please sir... question for you... Bee hive frem how much wire size ....?
Thank you this is super helpful. I tried beekeeping years ago with a canvas suit. Now I'm looking into getting a suit for protection against yellowjackets while working in my pastures. I'm tired of getting attacked.
There is good research to show that pure white sugar has no ill effects on bees. We as humans on the other hand should not eat the stuff. Fall honey... darker honey has been shown also to be harder for bees to over winter on do to impurities they must digest and pass. No matter how warm it is in your winter the nest still needs to be 85 degrees or more so when you add the extra boxes on top you are taking a great deal of the heat out of the bottom box. As you have stated... done right you only have the one box and thus the bees stay together, near the food and on the brood. win win win. Different with two boxes because that is two boxes of bees. you went into winter with one box of bees but added another box. The workers may have moves up to feed and as more moved the more the heat went up and thus they stayed up there. Bees here in Canada will sometimes starve to dead in the bottom box with honey in the top box as it is too cold for them to move around and get the honey. Possibly why we started trying SBB over wintering. Life is journey not a destination. Thank you for sharing part of yours. cheers
If you were relying on your fall flow to feed over winter why did you not leave some of the spring honey just in case the Goldenrod did not do well
I need a package of Italian bees
Package bees
Honest analysis will take you a long way. Thank you for sharing
two Boxes only make sense when you need it to split or to Distanzen the Brood for Swarmcontrol. The Queen don't need the Space of to Boxes. I'm using only one Box since 1989 and I'm very succesfull with it. Greetings from Germany!

Don't the Bees get Dizzy ?
I believe they get buzzed.
If it only took 60 seconds, that would be great
Used to love bee keeping with my best mates grandad think it's something evrry one should do once at least
First video of your's that I've seen. Leaving a queen excluder on over winter is an odd choice given your channel name.
Awesome video! Thank you so much for the candor so we can learn from your experience. Sorry you went through that loss.
Thank you! It is hard to publish such a silly mistake, but hoped it would be helpful to someone (beyond myself). A very wise beekeeper once told me the difference between a newbee and a master beekeeper is about 1,000 mistakes, so I am counting them down :) Happy Beekeeping!
Can you do single brood chamber in 8 frame equipment ?
Thank You for the information.
Great info! I was wondering what percentage of the brood box is typically stored honey in say September? Have you ever inspected the bottom (brood box) in September? Please keep these videos coming!!
Thank you so much for all the information !!
Thank you
I got a round and fencing veil, then I got cordovans and now work them in a tank top, shorts and flip flops 😅
The first mistake is “it’s not a trap”….. no bees get trapped inside, surely a trap traps things? It’s a bait hive…….
Actually once they move in I close them up so they can't get out (trust me they feel trapped at this point :) and take them with me to which ever bee yard I want to put them in. So I actually do trap them in a way, just not instantly like other "traps" might. But I have no problem with the term bait hive either. Happy Trapping....or bait hiving! :)
We love a great suit and jacket! Been making them for a couple decades.
Thanks for posting this!
Have you ever dusted packages with powdered sugar and watched the bees groom their mites off?
What is the foundation he talks about?
Wax foundation installed by the bee keeper into the frames to help jump start the bees progress towards building it out some can be plastic but most bee keepers use wax foundation
Great video! Im doing my first hive inspection tomorrow!
In my experience, a trap no more than 5 feet high will catch all the bees you want. I ain't getting on a ladder 15' high and wrestle a box out of a tree, thats a wonderful way to end your beekeeping career.
We had a swarm come up in front of us on our walk today. We had never seen one before, it was fascinating! Thank you for explaining the reason behind it!
Thank you so much for this video. I have packaged bees coming and I feel a bit more confident. I will continue to watch your next video on nucs!! Thank you, thank you 🐝💕
17:38 thanks for this vid! I learned a lot and feel much more prepared for my packages that are due in 2 weeks or so.
