The Mighty Southern Rock Lobster: A Delicacy Down Under
The southern rock lobster, also known as the red rock lobster or spiny rock lobster, isn't your typical lobster. Found in the cool waters off Southern Australia where we call them "Crayfish."
This delicious crustacean boasts a few unique features setting it completely apart from other shell fish like crawfish, marron, shrimp, crab & prawns.
Spiky Shell: Unlike its North American cousin, the southern rock lobster lacks the large claws. It resembles a lobster but lacks the big, characteristic pincers and instead has a spiny carapace for protection. They can grow up to 45 cm (18 inches) long in the Southern Ocean.
Rock Star: True to its name, this lobster lives among rocky reefs at depths of 5-200 meters, emerging at night to hunt for shellfish and other treats.
Sustainable Superstar: Caught sustainably using traps and pots, the southern rock lobster fishery is well-managed, ensuring healthy populations. A valuable seafood species, contributing significantly to the economies of Australia and New Zealand.
