Join me in talking, repairing, modding and repairing computers, pc's and video game consoles of all kinds and eras! Learning as I go with some of these retro beauties and love seeing how they work
Well...That Didn't go to Plan...
I know your probably tired of seeing me tweak with both Apple IIs and floppy drives, but this was something that I've been wanting to get done for a long time, and finally got the nerve to try it. Pretty redundant to have both floppies when i have the SD card adapter, but that's all in the fun!
Its pretty unscripted for the most part, and had A LOTTTT of things go south, but it all ended up working in the end.

Hey Everyone... was doing some more cleaning and organizing my computer room, and thought i could use a quick break sooo I decided to make my IBM 5170 even MORE era correct! ...just pay no attention to the updated BIOS from 1991, and the later ram card, and the later ide/floppy controller, and the hard drive from 1992 thats just acting as a load for the PSU.... ANYWAY!!!! I found a lower capaci...
How Bad is This MFM Hard Drive?

Just a quick video that was on my list of 'to-do' ideas that I'm getting around to while cleaning up the computer room. I've had this damaged and corroded ST-225 MFM drive for years and decided to crack it open as part of a future display project. I know it's dead so no harm in opening it up. Let's see just how bad it is though... Hit me up! Email- defcasualtech@gmail.com Instagram- instagram.c...

Reviewing the SP2SD (The Latest Hard Drive Emulator for Apple ]['s)

#appleii #retrocomputing I've been needing to get some hard drive emulators and such for some of my vintage machines, and one of them was for the Apple ][ line. After checking out and doing a bit of research on a lot of them (and WOW! there is a lot of hardware emulators for the Apple line of computers)...I came across a somewhat recent product line called the SmartPortSD, and decided to check ...

The 5170 Gets a New Floppy Drive!

#retropc #5170 It's upgrade time!.....Again... After getting all the stuff gathered around to finally add in a 3.5 floppy drive, and maybe a little more ram...I about had a massive issue due to the very cheap batteries. Soo, after fully re-tearing apart and recleaning...I'm ready to finally add a 1.44mb floppy drive to the IBM PC AT and get it basically fully done... Lets make sure it all still...

The Amazing Year that was 2023...and a Glimpse of 2024

The Amazing Year that was 2023...and a Glimpse of 2024
I’ve run into this naming stuff on other disk emulators, it has something to do with the order the files are loaded on the card. So part3.po needs to be the third one copied in order to guarantee the file ordering matches the order they are written
I had to test that and your right!! I can't copy 3 or 4 first...oh my God that is annoying quirk.
I added two 1.44 sony floppies and put them into the 800k cases. They work great. Even though I have a floppy emu and a booti.
First thing, the IIGS external 800k drives will work on a Mac. The external 800k drive that is Mac only is shorter, does not have the molded vent look and does not have a daisy chain port. The drive mechanisms are the same though, but it doesn’t have the daisy chain board which is what you need to make it work on an Apple II Secondly, the 1.44MB mechanism will work in the 800k enclosure without issue, though the Apple II will only recognize it as an 800k drive. If you want to have the full capacity available, you need the Apple II 3.5 Drive Controller Card. That card is equipped with the SWIM drive controller chip that supports 1.44MB drives. And the other cool thing is it will work on a Mac as an external 1.44MB drive if the Mac has a SWIM chip, which most do except the regular SE and earlier Macs that only had the IWM controller chip Thirdly you should use double density disks for 800k. The magnet medium on high density disks are different and trying to force it into a double density or vice versa will end up with unstable disks Fourthly, the constantly ejecting cycling may be caused by a broken gear in the ejected motor. This is pretty common in the auto eject drives. You can find replacement gears at MacEffects I’ve never thought of swapping a high density drive head to a double density mechanism, nice to know that works
Wow there's a lot here lol ill try and Answer as you commented lol 1. I had no idea the 3.5 would work with the mac...maybe I was going off the 5.25 wasn't able to...I've seen the smaller mac drive so I assumed they were different. 2. I figured the drive might but didn't know for sure I just assumed it could since the main mechanism was identical. I'm going to assume the swim chip was on the liron (and modern Yellowstone) cards 3. Yea I should have used DD to avoid issues, and j have some but they are older and little dirty ( a couple fouled a drive in my 486 trying to make a 720k floppy of simcity, so I tried hd thinking it would just work as do but then figured out like on a pc the notch needs covered. 4. Thats what I thought too but I took the mech apart and gears intact. I even took the eject part from a 3rd spare drive and same thing...ejection cycled. And yea I was surprised as well. That was a last ditch thing to get this working. It has a quirk now tho...I was reading a stack of unknown apple iigs floppies and 1 of them caused an io error for a while....went away after I had power off for about 2 or 3 minutes. And I can repeat it with that floppy so something odd but the ones I made work so I'm happy
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 The 5.25 will not directly work on a Mac, that is correct, and yes, the signalling on the wires are slightly different. The only way you can connect the 5.25 drive to a Mac is via the Apple IIe card for the LC or Colour Classic I believe. The Liron card and Yellowstone provides Smartport and the equivalent of the IWM, so even if you connected a 1.44MB drive to them, it will only operate as an 800K drive. Also the regular 800K drive for the GS won't work on the IIc but it will work on the IIc Plus. There is a variant of the external 800K drive that looks almost like the GS version but is the same colour as the IIc and has a thinner eject button, and is referred to as a Unidisk 3.5 If the gear on that eject motor was fine, then perhaps there is something wrong with PCB of that 1.44 drive. I've never seen that kind of problem that wasn't caused by a broken gear
@lemonherb1 oh the liron/Yellowstone is iwm not swim? Ah I must've read the site wrong lol And yea I think when I mentioned the c and c+ I was thinking of the unidisk. I know they are pretty pricey units. Yea it was weird. Constant failures and eject cycling. But what was weird is I have a drive with a bad gear and it just spins...this one I could see and hear the mechanicals moving and sliding so idk it was odd to fail that way...it was working just fine until it wasn't
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 Yes they are IWM. Only the Apple II 3.5 Drive Controller Card has the SWIM chip. Perhaps the large gear isn't aligned properly? The metal pin should be pointing away from the motor.
I bent that piece on a drive whilst trying to clean the heads. After some really intensive googling, I found some instructions on how to fix it. it was a word doc that I think I found on the way back machine. It was actually really easy. Put a piece of soft cardboard on the head (to protect it) and put a screwdriver between the heads as a fulcrum. carefully push down and bend it back in place. I fixed mine about 2 years ago and it's still working. It's worth a try, you cant kill it any worse...
That's not a bad idea actually... It not too much work to swap the heads over...I might try that and see.
not sure why you seem to get excited over disk II's. there were over a couple of million II series machines made over a period of about 17 years (last IIe rolled off the assembly line in 1993), and there was at least one disk II for each and every one of those II''s.
First PC I owned was a Packard Bell Legend I 286 PC with a 40MB hard drive in it, and it came with MS-DOS 3.3. The main thing I remember was the inconvenience of having a 33MB C: drive, and a 9MB D: drive because of the limitations of the partitioning system.
Wow that would be annoying... Just market it as 32mb at that point...what the heck can you do with 8mb partition. And I have a dead legend 386 I'd love to revive but it's pretty dead lol
New Sub, Detroit, Michigan Well done Sir. I had 2 IBM 5150s 20 years ago that were lost to stupid reasons. Keep Kickin aR$e
Welcome!! And bummer on losing the 5150s.. and I intend to keep going! Just got the 5160 to get hopefully working
Why PC-DOS?
Mainly since it's an IBM and thought it be neat to see it say that on booting to dos... Plus I already had a 6.22 cf card so why not
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 Good idea with CF card...
@RETROMachines yea..I was going to try and use the ide hard drive I put in as a PSU load but...cards make it so much easier. Even tho it's no issue making game floppies, sometimes just easier to swap cards.
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 I understand the reason for the CF card. I use it sometimes. I recently solved the problem of installing SW for MS-DOS. So I did YUM INSTALL... More: ua-cam.com/video/ao3ZQzFrAW8/v-deo.html
Why do not use the entire 64M of the CF card? AFAIK, you could have made a 32 primary partition and a 32M extended one, having so all 64M available. The commands cd .. or cd . do not work in DOS 3.3? Edit format, sys and other dos utilities are sensitive to DOS version.
Yea CD works....I just...didn't do that at the time. I was going to buy I was just happy to have gotten it to work. Plus I need to go thru it anyway, the dos 3.3 images I used for the 3.5 floppies were for the model 30. Shouldn't matter but still want to make sure there's not special model 30 only things In it to take up space. Once I do that I'll make an extended partition
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 Can`t wait your next video. You asked about dos games that can run on this PC. I have a collection of dos games from 1980 up to 2003. Are you interested? All collection is 32G but there are some doubles (games that were re-released a year or two later). What you can use on this PC are games up to 89, I am correct? Those are 682M unpacked, or around 411M compressed. Or, if you want a specific year?
WOW thats a lot of games lol well i have a set i downloaded (525 dos games) from 81 to 89 Ive been sorting thru to see what runs on what. Im thinking i want teh 5150 to be the early dos stuff around 81/82, the 5160 if it works will be 83/84 and the 5170 to be the 85/88 ish... with the 486 running everything else into the 90s (and a 386 if i can find one). But yea i might be interesting is seeing what all games would be on there to try out, even on some later builds into the pentium and super socket 7 stuff
Every time I install DOS 3.3 on a system I have to relearn how I did it previously. It's certainly not as simple as DOS 5 or 6. Some years ago I picked up a disk from a guy on eBay that more or less automates the process but it doesn't seem to work on every system.
Yea I only "knew" about the weird thing by seeing someone install dos...2.1 ? To a rll drive. And did this guy sell them for xtide? I remember there being a guy that had a install set for that purpose but I haven't seen his listing in few years.
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 Yeah, that's probably the same guy.
Probably. Shouldve got a set while I had the chance lol. Oh btw ..do you have any clue as to what happened there with planet x3? I'm assuming that wasn't ega mode, but that was way more than 16 colors right? Like that almost looked like 64 colors but I thought that was a cga monitor from a convo we had months back when i did a video on it
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 I'm not sure. are you running the most up-to-date version of PX3 with the added graphics modes? I found this. "EGA Medium Res 640x200x16" "This mode, as you probably guessed, uses the same graphics trick from the Tandy Hi-Res mode, and thus also uses the VGA graphics set with a dithering pattern. EGA mode does require its own executable, which is PX3_EGA" Maybe that's what it was trying to do? use some kind of trick to dither the 16 colors into 64 but it didn't work perfectly with a CGA monitor? I've gotten monitors to do some odd stuff they shouldn't before...probably not good for the monitor.
@AncientElectronics I think mines older....i haven't emailed David about getting the updated version. Iirc I think yea it's 640x200 16...that makes since it uses the tandy mode for it... probably why I thought it looked like VGA but even then I'd assume the whole screen would looked like the game itself. Like it was broken, but the border was still there. When I try the card in full ega even on boot the screen is wonky. I'm wondering if it's the cable? It was just a generic 9 pin serial cable off eBay...could there be something off with that? Like even a single wire not connected?
nice videos ! they will be helpful for me i just picked up 1 x compaq portable one , and two compaq portable 2 . aaaand they are at the status of project too !!
Same here! Had 2 portable 2s and have 1 portable 1 ready to be restored. Haven't touched the 1 since I know it'll need keyboard work
I have one of these and find it good and the fact you can use real cartridges is a bonus. Not perfect but good for money!! 🤷♂️
Congrats on 1K Subs man. Sorry to hear about your arm. Glad you're taking care of it. The Path to 1500. Let go!

Thanks man! This was such a ride getting to this point. Really needed that good news while laid up lol 😆 but whoot can only grow from here
@definitelycasualpcs8789 yep!! 👍
I actually found one in the dump, in beautiful condition, some one thought it was a sewing machine....... still sits in my clean but not using pile
Might want to take it apart and make sure that battery didn't leak or something. And yea I got asked why I was carrying sewing machines around in the car lol. They pretty close in size
@definitelycasualpcs8789 you lost a key? I am still watching. Man that sucks, I have a cat, and 2 kids, I feel ya
@definitelycasualpcs8789 I was wrong, I'm going to put up on my channel as a short for now, if your not busy and could drop some knowledge in the comments or help me at all that would be cool , apparently it's a Original portal, not a 2 or 3
@ScroogeMcDuckn I have a portable 1 that I need to restore still. I going to order the foam and foil repair kit ahead of time to save headache lol
@ScroogeMcDuckn oh and absolutely share your channel. Id love to watch and help out!!!
By the time I started building computers from used parts in 1990 EGA monitors were already rare. Luckily I was able to get enough cheap VGA cards to get the 286 or better computers updated.
I missed out on most PC stuff till about 2001. And even then was mostly on consoles so I'm experiencing things I never got to. Ngl the most fun(and headaches) seem to be the 80s up to the 486 era stuff lol
It was also used to play og xbox games
I always wanted a Left 4 Dead Style game set on the two islands from Jurassic Park or Skull island.
Dude hell yea!! Like have some over the top reasons there's so many dinos? Cloning machine went nuts... Boss battles being with the trex, spino or carnataurus...heck yea!!
Operation Genesis isn't a shooter 😬
No I just grabbed it. There is a JP based shooter but I grabbed wrong one lol
Turok 2 on PS4 and and ark survival evolved are your best bets for dinosaur games today
Original Turok was the best and I agree my friend dreams sometimes come true
hello from aus
Hello from US
Not a Dino game but Wild 9 on ps1 I loved that game
Never heard of it...might have to look it up and try it sometime
I remember there was a dinosaur fighting game like street fighter but instead dinosaurs.
Street fight but with dinos?? Ooo that sounds awesome!!
@definitelycasualpcs8789 yah i looked it up it was called jurassic park warpath on ps1, damn It was like more than 20 years ago.
Primal rage?
Gotta love Turok
Right?? I hate to say it cause it probably wouldn't be up to fans standards but... Turok remake using unreal 5
Does arc not fit?
Oh my God I kinda forgot about the ark series.....lol I knew there was a newer one but I literally could not remember it lol
My papa was really good with tampering with hardware and he made us a full t-bite hardrive and they loved to let us blow their money on games when we were stay over 😂
I remember back in the day for playstations. All you needed was a 300 GB Memory card. for a PS3, you just needed barely any space extension bc it was just way too much if you wanted 1 TB of storage. then comes the PS4 and the later eras of consoles where 1TB of storage essentially gives you one small library of games. don't even get me started with PC gaming.
Games need to not have all the resolutions baked in -- let you choose what resolution(s) of graphics you want to install.
And the games are even on the discs anymore, those 90GB is the game, that disc is simply a license to play the game, 360 you can play any game offline with no issue (no internet connection) but nowadays you can't even load up a game without needing to be signed into an account
I can't wait until games are gonna require 1tb just to download and another 100 gb to save my game 🥲
I'm just careful with my PS1 games. Still play ff7-9 and tomb raider 2 regularly.
I tried to be back then. But things happen Plus when I come across PS1 games, they are usually cracked or broken. Or missing art lol
Not only tons of retro stuff for Apple. Tons of stuff for everything. Stuff I never though would be created. Like memory / drive card upgrades for Trs-80 model 16 machines and such. Just added one of those CIRTECH Apple II scsi cards to my II+
Hey, was wondering, since you have ps2 games, i remember that i used to play this one lego star wars game on the ps2 with my brother, do you have it and whats the like cover look like? Sorry.
I actually had to look lol. The only lego PS2 games I currently are star wars the video game and Star wars 2 the original trilogy
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 omg thanks!! ❤️
@@protoz651 no problem!!
I just replace the jewel case if it's in rough shape. I like those cd-style cases , and they seem to take up less space than DVD cases.
Yea..that's what I been doing ..just a few don't have their art work and it looks wonky. Not that it bugs me too much but it kinda does to a point
Man are we really to the point where we have to explain that games were largely physical and thus didn't need drive space. I'm so old :'(
We might be... And that once....games were DONE when you bought them, no dlc, no season pass, no day one patches .. No micro transaction
Not much to do with it being physical games more just that the games required little to no space
This seems like a great way to preserve. Maybe look into 3d printing some cases using the og ones as the model
Never thought of a 3d printed thing... That could work. I mean at some point...there won't be jewel cases ((I mean by that point most of the og PS1 games might be long dead with disc rot but still))
I have 320 gb for my Xbox 360
Oh my God you madman! No one needs that much storage!!! What kind of nefarious things are you storing?? Lol
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 lots and lots of games
I remember part way through the xbox 360 life cycle save files go way larger going from a few KBs to MBs in size
We got a 360 about...2012? So I never really noticed the increase in save file sizes. I just remembered rango had a really small one in the kb. Kinda makes me wonder what the first game was to get into the mb
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 I remember when COD modern warefare2 came out with a 5MB save file size & thinking that's a lot, also as big as a ps2 memory card in size

Holy sheet is that a rango game
It iiiisssss lol
Why tf do you call consoles ‘counsels’ ?
I have no idea....i didn't catch it while recording, missed it while editing... Didn't realize it until someone mentioned it. My brain just had a moment and said "yep that's the word to use"
Pour nettoyer j'utilise les magic éponge de chez monsieur propre et j'ai donc plu facile

Why thank you
What is a Countsol?
Oh god 3 years later...and this still haunts me lol. I don't know i had a weird speech thing where my brain said "Yep thats the right word "
I'm assuming that's a basement/game room. it seems incredibly cozy. If I If ever got my own actual house I'd love to have a basement to turn into a game room. Picking three games that defined my childhood feels almost impossible as there were so many games that played different roles and had different impacts depending on the time. I'm not sure I could narrow it down to three.
Yep! Thats my little 13x15 basement game room On the other side of the wall (behind the camera) is my now messy computer room. (I showed a bit in the 5170 floppy update video) And yea it was actually a challenge to do...I assumed it be easy so I didn't plan on it taking long.... I think there's nearly 2 hours of footage of me pacing along the wall there deciding games lol
Oh yes, the artwork in the basement. :) To bad that is white and not color matched. When I first got into computers. I'm not sure. 1 year or so they went to white. Instead of like tan or what not.
Artwork in the basement? And yea ibm kinda had its one off white color ..hard to find

Hi. What RCA plugs did you use? All standard RCAs have long pins. Here you need a short pin
I honestly don't know the brand... I bought a couple cheap ones at a goodwill for the purpose of cutting up or using for things like this. Its mostly just looking around to find a good size, the rca style has such a variety I've seen older audio only cables that are from stereo systems that are usually short pins though...
Heeeey. Thanks for the response video dude!! It seems like itd be an easy challenge until you keep seeing many games you loved as a kid. 😂😂
Im so confused i could swear i responded to this lol But yea right? Like i didn't have many games back in the day, so i thought this would be a breeze...but heck I had like a stack of nearly 20 games before i realized it lol.
