4:121This hike is known as many things. Some say Usui pass and others say Apt no michi. Whatever its name is, it was really cool! We took a day trip from Karuizawa to a cool walking path that follows the route of an abandoned train line. We left just before 9am and got back to Karuizawa at 2pm. Even though this path is 15 minute drive away from Karuizawa station, there is very little public tra...

Nice video. How long were you in the Stone Church?
It felt like a while! But maybe 5-10 minutes? Eventually another group left and we followed them out.
Hey! Love the videos. Was wondering what you filmed these on? Going for a few months and would love to capture my trip in this style.
@@hanedorm this was the IPhone 13 Pro!
2:08 y’all are so cute! Love this shot! I also burst out laughing at how cute your encounter was with the nice grandpa giving you a history lesson in Japanese 😂
Oh man he was determined to tell me everything even though I was completely lost. Cute guy!
Such an entertaining and suspenseful journey. I'm glad you made it on time.
Thanks! Its great when things just work out :P
Oh you're back in Japan! Looking forward to more vids!!
I hope you enjoy the journey!
Yessss! The Japan vlogs are back!! The temple cats are so cute 😍
sooo many kitties!
I will be going to Japan Sept. 2025 I am wanting to do the trail, when you said in the video, that the video does not do it justice by the steepness of the hills, how bad are they, as I have heart issues and a metal plate in my leg. I was wanting to stay in the 2 towns that you all did.
I'd say they were at most a grade of 10-15%. Tsumago is pretty flat. Magome is a 15 minute walk from end to end with a decent slope. But there are lots of places to rest in Magome.
@@laura7murray thnx for the reply, so your saying that the trail that you all did is not that bad?
@@Traillesstaken The towns arent bad. the trail between the towns had some slippery steepish slopes. It might be fine if you give yourself lots of breaks? You could see if you are okay with walking from one end of Magome to the observation point, if yes then you can try the trail. If no then you could take the bus to Tsumago. But do be aware that some parts of the trail are a bit remote and might take emergency personnel awhile to get to.
wow nice video .
Hi.. in Somekobei Yumeyusai is free or there is entrance fee? Thank you
Hi! Looks like its 3000 yen during autumn season and 2000 yen during other times of the year.
What time did you visit somekobo?i’ll travel to kyoto next nov.and this is my first time to see autumn 🥰
November 15th! I hope you get to see the autumn foliage! It's definitely magical. My recommendation is if there isn't red foliage in the cities - you should try doing a day trip into the mountains like Ohara! The mountain go red a bit earlier than the cities.
@@laura7murray thanks.i’ll be there Nov28th.. hopefully i can see the magical autumn 🥹😍
@@sufiazzahro The yellow ginkgos should be going around that time! I hope you have a great time!
Most people skip the Nakatsugawa-Ochiai entry to the Nakasendo and head straight for Magome. On one trip, I got off the train at Ochiai but got lost heading in totally the wrong direction. Eventually, I found a bus stop that took me back to Nakatsugawa and then on to Magome. But yes, the Ochiai-Magome route is very nice. After I got to Magome, I backtracked on the Ochiai section. Natural springs dot parts of the Nakasendo which people avoid even though this was the water source during the Edo period. The water is incredibly cold and sweet, much safer than a Red Bull. One other thing is that palanquin bearers transported single passengers along the route. They must have been incredibly fit to have done this, not wearing Nikes, but straw sandals. You can get these sandals at a shop in Magome to get an "authentic" Nakasendo trekking experience.
Wow absolutely beautiful footage. How long were you in Kyoto?
Thanks for watching! We were in Kyoto for 6 days. You can definitely do it in less days. We just took it slow and checked out a lot of different places.
@@laura7murrayamazing! Did y’all visit at the beginning of the month?
@@ColorHoles We got there on the 14th of November and left on the 20th.
@@laura7murray thank you for the detail. Gotta say, my wife and I fell down the UA-cam rabbit hole on Japan traveling, and y’alls videos of Japan are by far the most engaging. Great footage! Thank you, both!

Hey amazing video! Do your remember the exact month and day of this? my gf and I are going from the 26th of oct to nov 10 and were wondering if the leaves will be beautiful and red like this???
We were in Ohara on November 19th. Certain spots will have red foliage during your stay. But I wouldn't expect to see much in the cities. I found the remote mountainous areas had red foliage earlier then other areas. I hope you enjoy your trip!
Hello :) I'm the production team of the Korean travel broadcast program "Map to Go Again". It is a program that conveys the satisfaction of travel to viewers through proxy travelers. As we prepare for this <Japan> episode, we would like to show you various aspects of Kyoto, Japan. I would like to introduce the video you filmed above to the viewers as a data screen on the broadcast. I'd appreciate it if you could give me permission to use your UA-cam videos on the broadcast screen with the source! I would appreciate it if you could think positively. Thank you!.
Somekobo Yumeiusai is a cafe or just a photo spot? And do I need to book a reservation beforehand ?
Photo spot and fabric dying studio! You can buy souvenirs there. You can hang out for a bit in the outside section but the staff do tend to usher visitors along. I booked two weeks before hand. If you go during autumn foliage you will need to reserve. Green foliage maybe you can get away with just showing up? Not sure though. Their website has reservation slots so you can check how busy it is!

what a time <3 thanks for visiting me!!!
Thanks for the yummy croissants! I've been dreaming about them. 🥐🥐🥐
I really want to rent bikes when we’re on our trip in October to get around. Did you find it challenging at all?
I had no issues with renting bikes! The Kyoto shop in this video is very easy to rent from. The man was very patient and helpful. In Hiroshima and Tokyo we rented from the bike share program docomo. Once you get the app running it's really easy but it can be a bit confusing setting it up.
@@laura7murraythanks for the tip! We also secured a 10am tine to visit Saiho-ji. Can’t wait!
@@alexxedge that's great! I'm happy for you. It was definitely a cool experience. I hope you enjoy!!
which place was the most quiet? Like, no or very quiet car sounds and no tv sounds from other rooms?
I tend to always have the fan/ac running in hotel rooms so that I can drown out other noises. I didn't have any issues with sounds in the Tokyo or Hiroshima hotel. The Kyoto machiya was on a quiet lane but you could hear all the cars. The ryokan along the Nakasendo was over the kitchen, so you could hear them cooking but it was very quiet at night. I think I'd rate the Osaka one as the loudest, and Tokyo as the quietest. Tokyo hotel was facing the lane and on the 12th floor so there were no car sounds.

Even as time passes and the surface of the city changes, nothing remains the same in terms of what lies at the root of Japan's unique culture. The common root of the originality of Japanese culture is the uniqueness of its geopolitical isolated location and the influence of its special natural environment. Even if culture and knowledge are imported from abroad, it is not dominated by them, but rather, after a certain period of time, it is able to select and discard the content, integrate it with its own culture, make repeated improvements to fit its environment, and eventually create its own new style. This is due to the influence of Japan's unique natural environment, which is both rich and harsh, and is very different from the natural environment on the continent. Japan's original country name "NIPPON" means "the country under the sun," but its other name is "YAMATO (WA, DaiWa)," which means "peaceful harmony between people and nature. In other words, the name of Japan is "the country under the sun," meaning the country of "great harmony between people and nature. The history of Japan is very old, about 2,000 years since the reign of the Emperor, but it was during the "Jomon Pottery" culture about 14,000 years ago that humans began to form villages and communities and live in this island nation. (It was about 30,000 years ago if the Neolithic Age is included.) Surrounded on all sides by the sea and geographically isolated from the Eurasian continent in the Pacific Ocean, this island nation has a warm and humid climate, and because it is a volcanic island, it is blessed with abundant underground clear water resources, diverse vegetation, and fishery resources. For this reason, people have lived here for tens of thousands of years, enjoying the abundant nature and living in peace with nature. However, while the natural environment of this island nation is rich, it is also harsh and has both light and dark sides. Since ancient times, the people of this land have respected human harmony and have lived in peace by working together as a group. They have shared and enjoyed the blessings of nature by pooling their wisdom and collectively overcoming numerous severe and harsh natural disasters, such as frequent volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami, summer typhoons, and heavy snowfall in winter. This is because this island nation has a harsh natural environment that cannot be overcome by a single person. Individual power is too weak to face the onslaught of nature, which can destroy the wealth we have built overnight. Therefore, many people should suppress their egos, dislike confrontation, and work together to create a livable environment and maintain cleanliness, and then work together to prevent disasters before they occur and to restore the environment after they have occurred. This is the most wise, efficient, and rational way to maintain peace and harmony in each other's lives, rather than to create more chaos by insisting on each other's selfishness, which has given rise to Japan's unique teachings, culture, and behavior. The ancient name of Japan, "YAMATO" or "WA" (peaceful harmony between people and nature), represents the wishes and reality of the people who have been trying to survive in the rich and harsh natural environment unique to island countries, which is different from the dry and stable land of the Eurasian continent. And it is in this ancient Japanese country name "WA YAMATO" that the essence of Japanese culture, the origin and secret of its unique culture, which is very different from the cultures of other Asian countries on the continent, is hidden.
I consider this your first vlogmas video ever!! : D
Thank you for sharing. This video is really helpful. I've got a plan to go there this year. First I planned to start walking at Magome-juku, but after watching your video I want to start at Ochiai-juku too. But I have to finish at Nagiso-juku in a day to take a train to the accommodation. I don't know if there're enough time? So may I ask that how much time you took from Tsumago-juku to Nagiso-juku? Thank you
Tsumago to Nagiso was about 1.5 hrs. You could do the full hike between Ochiai and Nagiso in about 5-6 hrs. But it wouldn't give you much time to stop and eat. Maybe you could pack a convenience store lunch and eat on the way. You also have the option to catch a bus from Tsumago to Nagiso if you run out of time. Hope that helps!
