Fantastic video!
He's beautiful 😍 ❤❤
From 300yards away with a 100k camera he will lmao
Really love this
Thanks so much!
How can you have an opinion about the R5 Mark II if you haven't tried it yet?
This was made prior to its release, based on just the specs and trying to determine if I should upgrade.
Sigma300-800 5.6.vs canon200-800?
Watched one of these for an hour last week on an elk hunt. Amazing animal.
They’re super cool! Love their call!
This was a fun episode. Matt's passion (and sense of humour) really comes across.
Thanks so much for watching! I really enjoyed my conversation with Matt!
Enjoyable podcast. I started listening on iPhone while away then came over to UA-cam to see the image you were discussing. Both formats were equally engaging.
Thanks so much for listening/watching and the kind words!
72 degrees and you need aircon on full? jeeez mate we have 108 degree here and i am dying each time in a park trying to get some birps.
Crazy that in 72 degrees the camera was overheating and not shooting in 4K 120fps!
@@matthewgehly i got the R7 and it never overheats even in extreme temperatures. strange
Keep up with hummingbirds 😂😂😂
Good episode
Greatly appreciated! Jeremy is a fantastic person and photographer!
I don't know why, somehow I was drawn to your videos! (I'm a UK newbie)
Haha! Glad you found my channel! Thanks for watching! 😁
Great video. I may have missed it, but what lens were you using?
Thanks so much! I was using my trusty Canon RF100-500.
Thank for the honest reviews and videos. What pack were you using?
My walk around backpack is made by Ape Case. Honestly, I've had it for so long that I can't remember the model. amzn.to/3Xunxxb
@@matthewgehly Thank you for replying. I have been using the 5.11 rush with the f-stop - Large ICU. Works great. holds all my gear but recently bought a sling pack for quick walks. thanks again.
But I don't own an R5, and why does your opinion matter? You're just another UA-camr who doesn't want to buy this model camera and another Joe who creates noise in the algorithm.
Thanks for watching! 😂
Thanks so much for having me on Matthew! You have a gift for interviewing people and bringing the best of this community together 🙌🏻
Really appreciate it, Jeremy! Your efforts in the wildlife photography genre are inspiring!
Meanwhile this “upgrade” for body only in Canada before tax is $5899 lol
Yikes! I ended up biting the bullet and getting one. I couldn’t help myself!
2 of my favourite Christian wildlife photographers, what a Collab!
Honored! 🙌🏻
So kind of you! I really enjoyed speaking with Jeremy. :)
They deserve peace away from hunters.
Absolutely! 🐻👍
I think the weight is absolutely fine, get a Peak Design Slider and it sits nicely.
I agree with you 100% that the price to upgrade from the R5 mark I to the R5 mark II is significant. However, my situation is different. I shoot for fun and I’m upgrading from a 14 year old Canon 5D mark II. I was going to get the original R5 but when I saw the significant improvements on the Mark II, especially the auto focus, I want the mark II. Also I don’t do much video, so for me the difference to get the mark II is about $1600 - camera plus new extra batteries plus an RF to EF lens adapter. Yes, that’s still a lot of extra money, but I’m old and this will be the last camera I ever purchase. So this future proofs it for me. If I already owned an R5 and mainly shot stills I don’t think I would upgrade.
Makes total sense! I’m actually highly considering pulling the trigger on the Mark II. I feel like my R5 I is wearing down. Seems to be missing focus that it used to nail. I was thinking of getting another Mark I, but might just go big! 😁
I had the chance to do a phototour with beat and lived a couple of days in his cabins. He is a great guy (and also a great photographer) It was for me a unforgettable time. Thanks to beat :)
That's fantastic! Thank you for sharing! I really want to get out there and spend some time with him!
Gym? Whats that?
Haha! Exactly!
Passionate hobby shooter here. Upgraded from R6 to R5 over a year ago with a great discount and cashback. Could use R6 grip and batteries, a no brainer. So will use my R5 mk I until mk III drops I suppose. Here in Sweden a R5 mk II body is USD 5,700
I absolutely love my R5. The R5 II looks like an amazing camera, but if you just got the R5 I and you’re happy, there’s no reason to chase gear. Use the money to go on a trip to use your camera!
This video is just awesome!!! ❤
Thank you so much for your kind words!
In Poland cheapest R5 mk II body only is $5709,51 (USD)

Words of wisdom Matthew. I will copy some of those next time someone ask me those questions.
Thanks Ron! I really think we have a responsibility to educate people about the subjects we photograph.
Beautiful video, love to see the wildlfe in their natural habitat.
Hi Bryan! Thanks so much for watching! 🐻😁
When asked that question, I just simply say “at a safe distant”
Perfect! Simple response.
Birding by kayak is another great way to get close to many shorebirds that would otherwise flee!
So true! I’ve thought about getting a kayak for years. I live by lots of water. Do you have any recommendations for what style or features to consider when purchasing a kayak for photography?
@@matthewgehly Yes! I have a Hobie Mirage Compass, which is pedal-driven and has a rudder. That means you have your hands free to work the camera. I can go all day for miles and miles without getting very tired, too. Highly recommended if it fits in your budget!
@@MichaelFogleman Oh man, I just looked it up. What an awesome kayak! I'm going to keep looking into it. I can see it being the perfect kayak for wildlife photography!
I've never seen a screech owl do ANYTHING during the day, I'm surprised you saw one taking a bath!
It was pretty crazy to see! It was a short encounter, but really exciting!
Just 2 batteries in external grip. Batteries cost money. Where are you getting 3 FREE batteries from?
I’m not sure where free batteries would come from. That’s why in the video the total cost reflects three additional batteries.
Thanks, I needed to hear all of this! (Lolo, Montana Photographer)
So glad you enjoyed the video! God bless!
You must have a good camera! What camera is it? 🤔
Haha! 😂
Question I hate as a wildlife photographer is when friends or coworkers ask if I can take pics of them or their family (for a photoshoot) which I reply............ NO!!!!!!!
Yep! That’s a terrible one too!
Getting anxious when outsiders ask for us stupid questions? No, why? Just don't overthink it. What I do? Give simple answers and for sure not need to get in details. I not even answer how I took the shot on social media, why bother? For sure not need 8 1/2min to explain to somebody how to explain my final picture came to be.
I guess you missed the point of the video. Maybe you didn’t watch long enough and hear the example responses? The whole idea is using the response to educate and help preserve the subjects that we photograph. Bears are being put down at high rates because of human interference. I care about the subjects I photograph. The responses are meant to help prevent encroachment into an animal’s space.
Mathew, interesting take. Thanks for your efforts. I can't, in all honesty, say that I've ever had someone ask that question. More often I get (in the field), "How far can you see with that?". I don't get anxious when people ask questions. They just don't know the details. Heck, I can't even talk to other photographers about some basic camera details such as "proper" exposure, dual gain, ISO invariance, gamma curves, color spaces, bit-depth, dynamic range, acutance, micro-contrast etc. In the end, this may not matter to the majority with a camera in their hands. As you say, for many, the lens, sensor used, cropping - all are details many do not take into account. That said, you can either sigh because the explanation is too long for what the question is seeking, or just respond with an easy answer and say you're open for more questions, if they have them. It's hard enough explaining that while your camera (if shooting JPG), software, and monitor all share sRGB as a color space, the gamut within that color space might be different in each setting so that red does not equal the same red (even though all devices share the same space - they don't necessarily share the same crayons within that space). Again, thanks for your video.
I get this question and location questions all the time. The example responses are all about making sure not to give the impression that I was right in the animal’s face. There are way too many critters being put down because of human interference. I appreciate your thoughtful response! Thanks for watching!
@@matthewgehly No problem. I do understand that you get this question, just haven't been asked it myself. Again, appreciate your take. Most people want to know where I was (and want a map) - I have to explain that the family blue heron photo with chicks was taken a few months ago....because I think they are asking so they can run out there to take a similar shot. I'll look forward to more of your content.
Interesting discussion. You put a lot of thought into this and worded those responses well. I think these concerns arise more when the subject is rare and often needs a lot of space. (Someone just asked me this question on Instagram about a cedar waxwing photo of mine and none of these concerns even entered my mind!)
Thanks for the comment, Lee! For me it comes up with bears quite often. I feel so many people who shoot with their cellphones want to capture closeups that are only possible with the equipment that you and I use. Every situation is different and if the situation allowed for a close encounter, that information without a huge back story is going to misrepresent the shot.
Awesome video, I just booked a campsite for this October. Really hoping I get half as lucky as you spotting Elk!
Thanks so much! Hope you have a great time and see lots of elk!
Interesting talk, Matthew. Thank you!
Thanks for watching, Phil! Hope you're feeling well! :)
Good and unbiased video instead of the paid cheerleading on other channels ;-) - thank you ! The upgrade price is the real stopper for me. If you don't earn your living with photography and need to trade in or sell your trusty R5 + BG R-10 R5 + one additional battery on the used market to mitigate the costs, you currently have to add € 3000 for the corresponding set of the R5II - here in Europe, at least. That's out of proportion. IMO., given that the gain of the R5 II compared to the already excellent R5 seems to be relatively small for nature and wildlife shooters like me - and the R5 has never let me down. The R5 II has inherited some sports-oriented features from the R1 such as ball sports and registration of persons/faces that are useless for nature photographers. Generally it seems that sports and event photographers are the main audience for Canon nowadays. For that clientel the R5 II may offer some more benefits over the R5 - if they can/want to pay the price.
I appreciate your insight! It's definitely a tough decision for many photographers, especially when it comes to balancing features and price. Like you, I love my R5 and I'm happy to continue to shoot with it. I really do like a lot of the features of the Mark II and I'll most likely grab one when the price comes down. I use an R7 as a backup. I'm kind of thinking of getting rid of it and getting a second R5 Mark I. I've always preferred the R5 over the R7 and my R5 (I got one from the very first shipment) is starting to show some signs of wear and tear. :)
@@matthewgehly Thank you, Matthew ! I doubt that the price of the R5 II will come down in the foreseeable future while the value of the R5 might decrease further in the next months. Many people are already looking for a bargain here. So I tend to keep my R5 or hold off for now, at least. I'd also appreciate some of the new features of the R5 II. But the huge difference in price which you cannot proportionally mitigate anymore by selling the R5 doesn't justify the switch for me - at least not now. Keeping the R5 instead of dumping it for a bargain and adding the R5 II might even be a better decision if you can afford it. But I have the R3 and R7, too. So an additional body doesn't make sense for me. As for the R7, that I had bought last year prior to my second trip to Tanzania, I found the 33MP crop sensor in combination with the 100-500 a very flexible and good set up for birds while I had used the R5 and R3 with the heavier 600mm/200-400mm for other animals. Of course, the R7 isn't quite in the same league for AF but I had no major issues. Rolling shutter wasn't a big problem because I had used EFCS most of the time. Cheers Wolfgang
Here in europe for the same we have to pay 5500 euros😮
3 extra batteries per camera
I am sure you can use external power for most things, I have to do this today with the R5C so it wont be a big difference except that the new battery can handle some shorter recordings better than the old one.
Why stop there? You're going to need at least two grips to get vertical controls and ethernet. You're going to need two extra batteries for the other grip. That's five batteries you have to buy! You're going to need an L bracket for when you want vertical tripod shots. $100! You're going to need a strobe for flash shots! $100! You're going to need 2 R5ii bodies for real work. You're going to need at least 2 cfexpress cards and 2 SD cards. The R5ii is a $12k camera!!!
Duh, why buy 3 additional batteries, why not 10, it’ll cost you even more! What a stupid comment!!!
Great video! We love Cades Cove... We try to go once a month, we were just there again over the weekend. Bears were plentiful in the cherry trees!
Thanks so much! I wish I lived closer! I love cherry season. It's been a few years since I was last there to see bears chowing down on cherries. They sure do destroy those poor trees! Haha!
@matthewgehly it looks like a rookie tree crew came through and topped/trimmed them 😆 🤣 😂. It's definitely impressive watching their acrobatics while they maneuver about from limb to limb eating.
@@varner226Haha!
I personally don’t think for photographers it is as nearly a compelling upgrade as for hybrid shooters. Since you’re paying a premium for half the features you actually use
