Photographing Whitetail Deer in the Rain | Pre Rut Action

It was a cool, rainy late October day as I trekked through the woods in search of pre rut whitetail bucks. Thank goodness for weather sealing! My Canon R5 and RF100-500 lens were up to the challenge and no worse for wear after this wet adventure.
The pre rut period in whitetail deer is marked by increased activity and changing social dynamics. The pre rut is characterized by heightened deer movement and more frequent daylight activity. During this time, bucks actively engage in scent-marking and scraping, using their antlers to create signposts in the form of scrapes on the ground and rubs on trees. Bucks become more territorial, marking their presence and signaling their readiness for the upcoming breeding season. Bucks begin to break from their bachelor groups during this period of time. Friendships no longer exist by the time the rut begins!
